CALL for ENTRIES: Knox Photo 2017

Learn more about Knox Photo 2017 from the Arts and Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville!green PROMISE

My papaya won’t ripen; it has been in my kitchen window for a week.  Ahhhh.  I try to eat mostly locally sourced/grown food; however, I am not going to commit myself to a lifetime of no bananas or papaya or mango because I live in the wrong grow zone.  As a result, some of the tropical fruits I buy are vastly under-ripe.  I usually just gross my fingers and hope for the best.  But when you know how fantastic something will the be, the anticipation can be a overwhelming.  This next Call is for a show I anticipate every year, both as a participant and a viewer.  Don’t miss this chance…

Check out this Call for Entries from Arts & Culture Alliance (Knoxville, TN) for the Knox Photo 2017. I have shown here.  I have juried here.  I teach here.  I would love to see your contribution here. Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Human Relationship to Water

Learn more about the Human Relationship to Water exhibit from LA Photo Curator!drip drip DRIP

Do you take water for granted?  Despite the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the ongoing reality of Flint, Michigan, and the horror of #NoDAPL protest conditions, among a hundred other examples, I am guilty of taking for granted that when I turn the handle, the water will be clean and abundant.  Until the wildfires.  It only took a week of boil conditions to make me realize how precious water is.  While we were under boil orders, I second guessed every utensil, every plate.  Did this get washed with boiled water?  Will this spoon make me sick?  Every meal. Every snack. Every day.  How would living without clean water affect your life?  I’m not the only one asking.  Take a look at this next Call questioning your relationship to water.  Take a look…

Human Relationship to Water from
L.A. Photo Curator

“. . .man’s relationship with water has become estranged. As ports closed and moved outside of the city, as planes and cars took over the role of the seas, and as the individual came to expect their cargo at their doorstep, so too did human interconnectivity lose its relationship to water and the natural elements.” –from Adriaan Van Der Plas via laphotocurator.com

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Photography

DEADLINE: April 5, 2017 (Midnight PST)

NOTIFICATION: (and opening date) April 25, 2017

ENTRY FEE: $20 for up to 3. 15% of artist fees go to 2 charities per competition. 7.5% to the curator’s choice of charity and 7.5% to the first place winner’s chosen charity.  Adriaan Van Der Plas has chosen the charity Clean Water Action.

CURATOR: Founder Adriaan Van Der Plas was once himself an outsider, having left his hometown of Vienna, Austria in 1973 to immigrate to New York City. Around this time, artist Konstantin Bokov was preparing to make the same transition. Inspired by the works of Van Gogh and unable to show his art in the political climate of the USSR, he decided to leave the Ukraine for New York city. The two became acquainted in 1993, when Bokov approached Adriaan at his former art pushcart concept in the South Street Seaport district, “Art a la carte”.

Adriaan became an avid collector of his work, recognizing the sincerity by which the work was able to portray New York’s spirit and materiality. With the opening of the Van Der Plas gallery on 156 Orchard Street, Adriaan made it the gallerys mission to bring contemporary outsiders  into the public eye.

SALES: All sales are conducted between the artist & buyer.  There is no commission.

CALL for PROPOSALS: Solo 2018

Learn more about the 2018 Solo Exhibit opportunity from VisArts!one BOWL at a time

While giving a seminar on pricing artwork last week, someone asked me who AAAD’s readers are.  “Foodie artists, I suppose” to which she replied, “I like to eat, does that count?”.  Of course it does.  I’ve had days, weeks & months that I have unintentionally boycotted cooking, recipes or any ingredient more complicated than cereal.  Seriously, folks, just eat.  Sometimes you can, sometimes you can’t –both art & food.  If your art is ready, this next Call is a great next step…

CALL for ENTRIES: Fairies in the Garden

Learn more about the Fairies in the Garden exhibit at Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center!food for FAIRIES

My grandmother loved fairy food.  She would boil sugar and vinegar together for what felt like forever (15 minutes) and then add baking soda at the last minute.  Magically, it seemed, the concoction would turn almost orange.  Once cooled, it had this beautifully buttery flavor.  Sugar + vinegar = fairy food.  Try it.  In the meantime, this next Call is all about the fairies.  Maybe a fairy kitchen?  This one is creative fun…

CALL for ENTRIES: Jonesborough Open

Learn more about the Jonesborough Open Juried Art Exhibit from the Mary B Martin Program for the Arts! more than CORN

Appalachian cuisine is a “new” thing in food circles.  But it isn’t. Everyone carries their own baggage about regional foods.  When I was little, if you referred to mountain food, fried chicken would be hailed as the prime example.  Then with the legalization of moonshine, everyone seems to think the local fare is all about corn whiskey and cornbread.  It is all more complicated than that, I promise.  What if food, in concert with art and culture are THE answer for Appalachian economic recovery?  This next Call offers an art opportunity in Appalachia.  This is a beautiful venue…

GREENS are the new black

The greens are emerging.  Many of you know that I live in Gatlinburg and wildfires recently swept the area.  Firefighters stopped the fire a mere 6′ from my doorstep.  The forest surround my home is charred.  But all of this unseasonably warm February weather (76°F today) has prompted the most tender of green leaves and unexpected happy daffodil heads to appear.  It is just another reminder that Spring is around the corner bringing with it the soft first lettuce leaves.  I can’t wait.  This next Call is in search of emerging artists; lettuce need not apply.  Take a look…
