He has received numerous honors including a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. McElhinney is also a published author who has conducted numerous oral history interviews for the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, Coleccion Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, the Frick Center for the History of Collecting, Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, other foundations & private individuals.

MEDIA: Open to all* media that can be represented as a digital image / photograph. The elevator doors measure 36” wide x 80” high, which translates into a 1:2.2 ratio. (Portrait orientation.) Images that are more than half as wide as they are high may be cropped to fit the available space.

THEME: Three images will be selected, one for each elevator door in the Cultural Center’s Education Wing. The images, provided as high resolution digital files, will be reproduced on material to be affixed to the elevator doors for one year.

My husband and I celebrated our 20th anniversary with Chinese takeout because neither of felt like cooking or grocery shopping. It was our typical night egg drop soup & steamed dumplings, but the thing that made the night a celebration came in a paper bag. A beautiful, fresh chocolate eclair from our local doughnut shop, a guilty pleasure from the middle years of our marriage when that was one of the only splurges we could afford. Since then, I tend to watch my sugar intake and my husband was diagnosed with a wheat allergy. But with a that single damn-the-consequences pastry, I felt the heart flutter that says he’ll stick for another twenty. Some of the best things come in, or on, paper just like in this next Call. CURATOR: Yorgos Efthymiadis is an artist from Greece who resides in Somerville, MA. He was a finalist for the 2017 Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship and was presented with a 2017 Emerging Artist Award from St. Botolph Club Foundation. He has exhibited in various locations, including Filter Photo Festival, Danforth Art Museum, the Griffin Museum of Photography and the PRC in Boston. Lately, he created a gallery in his own kitchen, titled The Curated Fridge (Crusade for Art Engagement Grant Finalist, Winner of the Popular Vote). The idea behind this project is to celebrate fine art photography and connect photographers around the world. There is a guest curator for every show which run on a quarterly basis, free of charge. Yorgos is represented by Gallery Kayafas in Boston, MA.

AWARDS: The curator chooses 1st place, 2nd place & 3 honorable mentions. The 1st place winner will receive a review by one or more curators including a Q&A about the photographer’s work. In addition, their image will be on the home page for a month. 2nd place & honorable mentions will have their image shown along with their bio, artist statement, C.V. and a link back to their website.

AWARDS: Solo & group exhibitions in The Main Gallery or The Lab Gallery. Download a .pdf of the gallery floorplans. The Main Gallery is approximately 2,500 sq. ft. with 1,800 sq. ft. of exhibition space. It features 14 ft. ceilings, LED track lighting, three ceiling-mounted high lumens projectors, acoustic baffling & white walls. The Lab Gallery is approximately 700 sq. ft. and can exhibit wall-hung artwork only. Like the main gallery, it has 14 ft. ceilings, LED lighting & white walls.

ABOUT: The Brentwood Arts Exchange is The Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission’s component of the public-private partnership Gateway Arts Center, serving as an anchor for Prince George’s County Gateway Arts District.

I’ve had many a conversation about why some foods, eggs & bread & oysters for example, come in dozens. I’ve heard that it is easier to divide because it has more factors (1, 2, 3, 4 & 6). I’ve heard that a bakers dozen (13) exists merely so delivery men don’t eat part of the order making the baker look like a cheat. I’ve heard it originated in the fact that there were 12 pennies in a shilling which made sales without change making easier. None of these are verifiable though. Did you know there is even a Dozenal Society that advocates for 12 as our base number instead of 10? While you contemplate the math of it all, this next Call will only choose a half dozen artists to participate in this show. Are you one of six?
