When’s the last time you ate a candied apple? I haven’t had one in a while either. Every year I am tempted at the Tennessee Valley Fair to at least have a caramel apple, but I chicken out every time. I mean, I’m not afraid of the sugar-draped fruit, but it seem like a commitment. It’s not like I can eat it with a knife and fork in deliberate portions; you have to sink into it teeth first, knowing you may end up wearing it face, fingers, clothing and all. I’m not ready.

This next call is a worthy pursuit on its own, but it is also a measured solution to the art fair. When’s the last time you contemplated participating in an art fair like Art Basel? One option is to venture out on your own, which can be very expensive & risky if you aren’t in the right place for that opportunity. Another possibility is going as a part of a group or gallery, which still involves costly production like framing and shipping with no guarantee of sales. If you’re not ready for either of those options, this call from Create! Magazine gives you an opportunity to reach the Miami art week audience without the commitment to a booth. JUROR: The Director of 3 galleries in central London and New York, Rebecca Hossack was born in Melbourne in 1955. Following degrees in Law and in History of Art, Hossack studied at Christie’s and at The Guggenheim in Venice. She set up her own gallery in Windmill Street, Fitzrovia, in March 1988. Hossack’s business, despte the economic climate, has not only survived, but thrived. From 1993-7, Hossack served as the Australian cultural attaché in London, initiating literary links between Australian and British writers and organising a series of exhibitions of Australian art in London.

AWARDS: Artists selected by the guest juror will receive a 2-page spread including a brief bio, website, and 2 images in print and digital formats. Published artists will receive a complimentary digital issue and will be listed on Create! Magazine’s website/social media & will be listed with images, details and information on theirr website/social media for life. My local farmer’s market is almost done for the season. Because the market uses the parking lot between the American Legion and the post office, it is only available to us from late Spring to early Fall. The worst of it is that it will likely cut off my supplie of golden goodness, local honey.

My work has prominently featured golden hues lately, and I’ve fallen in love with some metallic Japanese watercolors. I’ve even spent some time making my own metallic watercolors, using honey as a humectant. Luckily, my paints don’t require Mason jars from the local farmer’s market. I fall in love with foods, binge needlessly and then tire of them quickly. It is a pattern. I have eaten enough watermelon this summer that the very notion of it is a little nauseating. I’m off in pursuit of something new, but I’ll make my way back to watermelon by next summer. I’m often that way with galleries as well.

I become enamored of the curatorial vision of a handful of galleries for a while, then tire when it feels like I’m seeing the same Calls from them over and over again. Sometimes you need to stretch your proverbial legs, take your work for a walk, explore new territorty. While on one of those searches, I came across this theme and thought it so relevant and current to my work, that I should give it a try. I offer it to you in case it is of interest…

I make the best quiche in the world. Not hyperbole. (The quiche pictured here is not of my making.) You can say what you want, but I will not be dissuaded, ha. It is NOT, if fact, what I was hoping for as a ~~supper~~ super power, but it is what I got. My husband has decided that I am allowed to have a big head regarding this one topic; however, I suspect he’s just humoring me for fear his quiche connection will dry up before he learns my secret techniques and/or ingredients. Bwahahahaha.

This next Call indicates No Big Heads. Do I still qualify? Just kidding. I like this next Call because it ticks off a lot of great mileposts for many of us. It is an academic show, a resume builder, and it is in Alaska, a state missing on many of our resumes. The submission size is limited to 12″ or smaller in any direction, so shipping is cheap & easy, AND there are cash prizes.

How do you fuel your early afternoons? I know some of you find it freaky that I’ve not consumed coffee in 20+ years, but I’ve just never acquired the taste. Whether you choose sugar-full or sugar-substituted, soft drinks are a horrible alternative. So, I am taking suggestions. Smoothies are fantastic, and I can make pretty healthy choices that offer a little energy boost. However, to maintain any sort of variety, I’d need a much larger amount storage space. Has anyone tried the the soup & smoothie subscription service? (not a paid post or affiliate link). It might be an interesting way to get variety. Sometimes you just need a little help.

This next Call is MORE than just a little help. Many of you will live outside the qualifiers (living either within 150 miles of D.C. OR non-Americans living outside the U.S.), but on the off-chance some of you might qualify, I wanted to be certain to post this opportunity. The award is invaluable and listed in full below. This is an open call for proposals for solo exhibitions for Hillyer’s 2020/2021 season.

ELIGIBILITY: Hillyer focuses on under represented artists. We accept proposals from regional artists that live within 150 miles of Washington, DC and have not had a solo exhibition in the last three years in a professional gallery or art space OR work from international (non-American) artists that are both living & working internationally.

MEDIA: Open to all media

DEADLINE: September 10, 2019 (by 4pm)

ENTRY FEE: $30

AWARD: A month long exhibition in one Hillyer’s three gallery rooms, Artist honorarium, Inclusion in annual RISE exhibition, previewing selected artists for 2020/21 season; Ongoing support from Hillyer staff, including a studio visit and exhibition consultation with Hillyer’s Director, assistance with exhibition installation and de-installation, review of exhibition materials (artist statement, bio, labels, etc), and marketing and promotion of exhibition. Accepted artists also benefit from our Artist Advisory Program, where our highly qualified Artist Advisory Committee works individually with each artist to help them prepare their exhibitions and establish themselves in the DC-arts community. It is almost apple season ’round these parts, and I cannot wait. I grew up thinking Red Delicious apples were “apples”, and I wasn’t a fan. Not until I became a teenager did I understand there were many other varieties. Not until I moved to Tennessee did I realize how many varieties there really were. Now, I live within a few miles of an orchard with more varieties than I imagine I’ll never get around to trying. I appreciate being able to know about my food, about how it is grown and harvested and sold, and how those funds support the lives of my neighbors.

That connection to my food is what made me connect to this exhibit about agricultural awareness. I know that many of you are hoping to add a museum show to your resume, and this is a great opportunity to do just that. Your work doesn’t have to be literal or necessarily botanical to fit this curatorial them. Show them what you’ve got.

CALL for ENTRIES: Winter Solstice

SPRING greens

Sweet potato pie is a family favorite. As we head into fall and the the pumpkin-spice vs no-pumpin-spice debate rages on endlessly, I’m over hear making sweet potato pies from fall all the way into winter. Sweet potatoes are available year ’round, take much less time to cook from scratch than sugar pumpkins and require far less added sugar. I know you think you don’t like them, but try them. Fall in love with them and you can be eating their beautiful orange goodness, from scratch instead of can, for the entire winter.

This next Call is centered around the mood and ambiance of winter and the work that it inspires. Winter tends to be productive for me, but it often produces darker work, literally and metaphorically. Are you affected by the change in the season? This show’s call deadline is in September, so you’ll either need to pull work from last winter or predict the oncoming season. If you’re looking for a museum show for your resume, investigate Marin MOCA, it is one of my favorites.
