I’ve been invited to a black and white dinner. On first glance, I assumed that it was just a black & white dress code, but, in fact, it is THE MENU that is color limited. Each of us has been asked to bring a dish. I am scrounging for ideas. I have crostini with goat cheese and black olives, pasta with poppy seed infused oil & the ubiquitous black & white cookie or cupcake. I’m open to ideas. This next Call wants your black & white one-of-a-kind prints. Limiting the palate requires you to up your game. Whatcha got?

To prepare our minds for the absence of color and the beginning of winter solstice the world of color becomes secondary as we prepare for a blanket of white to cover the north . . . . Conceptual creation becomes one of highest importance during this time and in this show we hope to gather a divergent collection of fine art prints that display the highest quality of imagery using only black & white ink.” — Rubber City Prints

ENTRY FEE: $45 for up to 3, $10 ea. add’l under 20″x30″, $15 ea. add’l over 20″x30″

JUROR: Erica Criss holds her MFA from Kent State University and has been a practicing printmaker for the past 10 years. Erica has been working in the non-profit sector of the arts for the past 7 years & is currently managing a printmaking studio in NYC, the Manhattan Graphics Center. Here, Criss works with a diverse group of artists & runs the NY International Miniature Print Exhibition & Competition. She has seen and handled prints from all over the world.

AWARDS: All accepted entries will be listed in an online exhibition catalog. Best of Show: Solo exhibit at Rubber City Prints, print supplies gift basket & $250 voucher towards RCP workshops; 2nd Place: 2 Free future entries & $100 voucher to RCP workshops; 3rd Place: $50 workshop voucher at RCP; and (2) Honorable Mentions: $25 workshop voucher at RCP.

THEME: Ideas regarding protest

DEADLINE: Sept. 3, 2017 (11:59 pm PST)

ENTRY FEE: $50 for up to 3, $10 each add’l

JUROR: Stephen Fisher earned a B.F.A. in painting and printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University (1976) and an M.F.A. in printmaking from Yale University. He currently teaches at Rhode Island College as a Professor of Art where he specializes in printmaking & drawing. Fisher’s work has been exhibited in a variety of national and, occasionally, international venues & earned numerous awards in a wide range of competitions. His drawings & prints can be found in numerous public, corporate and private collections. Public recognition of Fisher’s efforts include, a regional N.E.A. Fellowship, 3 Rhode Island State Council on the Arts Fellowships & a Graphic Media Achievement Award from American Artist Magazine.

AWARDS: First Prize $1000

CALL for ENTRIES: Artist Residency from Brush Creek Foundation for The Arts

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists 18+

MEDIA: Residencies are intended as professional development opportunities for writers, visual artists, performance musicians & composers in all fields & genres.

DEADLINE: September 1, 2017 (for the Winter/Spring Residency which runs January – May).

ENTRY FEE: $40 for up to 20 images, 20 pages or 2 scores/2 music files.

JUROR: After reviewing the work samples in each discipline (arts work, scores and manuscripts), a rotating panel of experts & professionals in the art & humanities independently rate & rank the applicants based on the development & promise of a personal vision or voice. On average, BCFA’s capacity is 8 residents each month. This includes 4 visual artists, 2 literary artists & 2 musicians. During the Winter/Spring session, 40 residents are invited.

AWARDS: Winners receive exclusive studio space, meals & individual lodging. Residents are responsible for all necessary supplies and transportation to and from Brush Creek Ranch. Residencies are 2-4 weeks in length. This depends on availability and applicant’s ranking in the jury process. Preference will go to those requesting a 4-week residency.

My Spanish classes are coming along nicely although I am struggling with objective pronouns. My food vocabulary expands easily and exponentially. My favorite is pasteles. Cognates are easier to remember, but some words just stick in the brain & roll off the tongue. Pasteles = cakes. This next Call is for pastels, not pasteles, but segues are hard. Ivers attained a BFA in painting & 2-D design from Hartford Art School in 1973 & found work in the advertising field for the last 40 years, after which she returned to her love of painting. She is the Past-President of the CT Pastel Society, former member of PSA Board of Governors where she is a Master Pastelist & was inducted into the IAPS Master Circle of Pastelists. She is a current board member of IAPS & is affiliated with numerous pastel societies & art organizations.
