While most of the world is obsessed with pumpkin-flavor, not actual pumpkin, I am reveling in the other winter squashes — butternut, acorn & patty pan. My farmers market sells these squash, in season, for $1 each. Split & roast one of each squash, scoop out the insides and puree through the food processor, add a little salt, pepper, garlic and a touch of curry or a few red pepper flakes, and the resulting squash soup is divine. It looks like baby food, but the flavor is unbelievable. I makes lunch for all three of us for at least two or three days. Squash, just squash. It’s a solo act, just like this next Call. My grocery bill is absurd. I’m not having dinners of foie gras & truffles. In fact, most of our meals are vegetable laden. I try to stop by the farmers market at my local apple orchard. This week, it was $25 for apples, onions, 4 sweet potatoes, 3 bell peppers & 2 eggplant. As you might imagine, I then proceeded to spend a fortune at the grocery store to supplement my farmers market finds. I have a family of only three people + my four-legged child. I buy in-season, cost-conscious items. I consider myself a master food shopper, and I can barely hang on to a healthy menu. How are people without access to locally-grown produce options supposed to avoid eating processed food? The economics of hunger are devastating. This next Call is an excellent use of YOUR $25. Everywhere I go there are pumpkins. Big orange jack-o-lantern-style pumpkins are everywhere –shipped in from farms across the state. Funny enough, while my neighbors (along with most of the country) are obsessed with pumpkin-flavored everything, there are almost NO pumpkins meant for cooking (sugar pumpkins) to be found in grocery stores. I spent my childhood as the family cook & server. I was raised by a single father that couldn’t cook. I think he realized early on that ANY talent I had in the kitchen would surpass his own. Even before I could cook with aid of a step stool, I was already setting the table and serving dinner. I remember serving a plate of spaghetti and tomato sauce to my father, already seated, who quickly discovered you shouldn’t trust a 4 year old to secure a drop leaf table. Chow’s solo show in downtown L.A. earlier in 2015, “Memories Redux”, brought lots of high praise. Chow has also placed twice in the prestigious Lucie Foundation International Photography Awards.

AWARDS: Winner receives review by curator plus online exhibition (front page of site for a month, then archived). Winner also receives Q&A making a substantial PR piece for the photographer. In addition 15% of all artist fees go to the curator’s favorite charity, the Create Now. There is a 2nd place winner and 2 honorable mentions which will show their bio and images archived on the site.

JUROR: Oliver Wasow is a fine art photographer and collector of found photography oddities currently living and working in Rhinebeck, NY. He received his BA from Hunter College and his Master’s from the Transart Institute, in Austria. His work is currently represented by Theodore:Art in NYC.

Wasow has had solo exhibits at the Josh Baer Gallery, Janet Borden Gallery, Tom Solomon Gallery in L.A., The South Eastern Center for Contemporary Art in N.C. & Galerie De Poche in Paris. His work has also been included in numerous nat’l & int’l group shows. His photographs are included in a number of private & public collections. He has been the recipient of various grants & awards including a Louis Comfort Tiffany Grant in 1999 and, in 2000, his 2nd NY State Council on the Arts Grant.

The sight of a train trestle always conjures my cravings for hot chocolate. My entire life has been spent in residence within about a half-mile of railroad road tracks. I loved sitting on my front porch in the Fall with a cup of hot chocolate and listen to the trains pass. That all ended when I moved to Gatlinburg. CURATOR: Mona Kuhn is best known for her large-scale, dream-like photographs of the human form. Her work often reference classical themes with a light and insightful touch. Kuhn was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1969, of German descent. She received her BA from The Ohio State University, before furthering her studies at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1996. She is currently an independent scholar at The Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles.

AWARDS: The number of billboards will vary depending on the number of submissions received, the availability of viable billboards & current market prices for those billboards. Viable billboards mean that they exist in well-traveled (car and foot traffic) locations. All billboards will include the artist’s name. The website will have images of each selected work, the artist’s name and a link to their website.
