It has been a complicated day week, and my husband asked, “Want a drink?”.  I declined.  “Want a pizza?”  Um, yes please.  We’ve been married for nearly 20 years.  He’s got my number.  And does my comfort pizza feature fresh, gourmet ingredients?  Of course not.  I want what we have dubbed “cardboard” pizza.  It is much like the cafeteria pizza at your local public high school.  I know, bad for me.  Hush.  This Call is from a gallery that could be great for your career.  And YOU can be the fresh ingredient.  There’s no fee to try…

JURORS:  The department’s Gallery Committee meets twice a year to review exhibition proposals and will contact artists when additional information is needed.

AWARDS:  If extended an invitation to exhibit artist/group acknowledges willingness to comply with agreed TBD scheduling, contractual obligations and other items or actions necessary to insure success of exhibit.

After a day of planting African daises and marigolds for my mother, I have the first (& hopefully only) minor sunburn of the season. A sunburn always makes me crave melon, but cantaloupe and honeydew aren’t at their best at the moment.  Hopefully by the time my mother’s landscape of Mexican heather is in full bloom, even the watermelon will be ripe.  In the meantime, this Call wants to know about the different “scapes” in your life — land, city, sea or mind.  Take a look…

ELIGIBILITY: All artists age 18+

MEDIA:   Open to still media, including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, digital, prints, fiber art, collage, etc.

THEME: Environmental settings “…artists’ visions may transport the viewer to a lovely landscape, cityscape, seascape, or mindscape that invites them to enter their realm of beauty, uniqueness, serenity, etc.  However, works reflecting human impact against the land, seas, etc., always major concerns, are encouraged as well. The earth’s landscapes are places of thought, meditation, reflection, tranquility, and at times sorrow.  The landscape artists’ creations are defined and weighted only by the depth at which their presentations enrich our heart and conscience.”

DEADLINE: May 7, 2018

NOTIFICATION: May 18, 2018

ENTRY FEE: $20 for 1, $10 ea. add’l

I don’t understand the Sunday “cheat day”.  I have lots of health conscious friends that believe Sundays are for eating anything you want, no matter how processed, fatty or sugar-laden.  They are looking for a respite, I suppose, from the restrictive day-to-day food habits they practice.  But, I’m an adult, and I don’t need a cheat day.  I am going to eat what I want when I want and deal with the consequences.  Life is short; I want everyday to be a respite from deprivation.  So there.  This next Call offers you a respite from the world and time to concentrate on your art.  Take a look…

ENTRY FEE: None. Ox-Bow has furthered its commitment to the needs of artists by no longer charging fees for the residency program (including application, room and board, and residency fees).

AWARD:  2, 3, and 5 week residencies, September 3 – October 7, 2018.  All accepted residents will be fully funded. Artist may be considered for additional stipends to help pay for the cost of travel, supplies, and time away from work. Please indicate your interest in being considered for an additional stipend on your application.  Recipients residency fees are waived and can possibly receive a $200/ per week stipend.

Was there a bumper crop of clementines this year?  Most winters I cling to them as a dose of orange-y sunshine while I wait for the greens to turn green and the tomatoes to lose their gray, hot house pallor.  But, truth-be-told, most clementines I buy seem flavorless starting around the end of February.  But this year we’re into April, and they are still bursting with flavor and adding beautiful color to so many of my meals.  This next Call wants to see your color inspiration.  Take a look…

JUROR: Joel Parsons is a curator, artist & teacher based in Memphis, where he is the Director of Clough-Hanson Gallery at Rhodes College & Asst. Professor. His curatorial practice is often collaborative and driven by a desire to bring institutional resources to bear on conversations of equity and marginality. He is the founder and co-director of Beige, an alternative gallery devoted to the work of LGBTQ artists.  As a Thomas J Watson Fellow in 2007-2008, he studied relational art practices in emerging global art centers. He received an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. 

AWARDS: Best in Show is $1,000, and total awards are $3,200. The People’s Choice Award is $200.00 and will be voted on by visitors throughout the run of the exhibition. Best Packed: $100 This award will honor for the artist who packs their art in the most professional manner.  ♥
