I shop from a half-dozen grocery stores. Because all but one is out of town, my menu is often reflected in my travels for the week. Thai food only shows up on the table when I make it 30 miles out to get natural peanut butter. I mean, the local grocer has something called “natural”, but I think we can agree that just because something CAN be eaten doesn’t mean it SHOULD be eaten –natural or not. However, I do love the junky peanut butter cereal available everywhere that is neither natural nor contains actual peanut butter. Hi, my name is Rachel, and I’m a food snob hypocrite. THEME: Natural Encounters. “We now know that 60% of primate species are threatened with extinction, as are hundreds of other species. In the the Arctic, large areas of permafrost are melting, and an ice swath the size of Delaware is separating in Antarctica. These are signposts for a hopeless future for our planet, and it’s our responsibility as artists to call attention to, and alter, this course. Please submit images that address the connection and interdependence between humans and the natural world. The images may or may not be documentary. I’m looking for emotional impact as well as a strong composition. I encourage all photographic techniques, although the message is more paramount than the medium.” –Fran Forman

DEADLINE: March 31, 2018 (Midnight PST)

ENTRY FEE: $20 for up to 3. 20% of artist fees go to 2 charities –½ to the curator’s choice of charity & ½ goes to the 1st place winner’s choice. Fran Forman has chosen the Animal Legal Defense Fund.

CURATOR: Fran Forman‘s photo paintings have been exhibited widely, both locally and internationally, and are in many private collections as well the permanent collections of the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, The Grace Museum & the County Down Museum. Forman was selected to be Artist in Residence at Holsnoy Kloster, Norway, in 2016 and exhibited at the Sunnhordland Museum in Norway in 2017. Recently, Fran has mounted solo exhibitions as well as numerous group shows. She is represented by Pucker Gallery (Boston), After Image Gallery (Dallas), and Susan Spiritus Gallery (CA). She is a Resident Scholar at the Women’s Studies Research Center at Brandeis, a recipient of several grants and Artist Residencies, and teaches digital collage internationally.

AWARDS: The curator chooses 1st place, 2nd place & 3 honorable mentions. The 1st place winner will receive a review by one or more curators including a Q&A about the photographer’s work. In addition, their image will be on the home page for a month. 2nd place & honorable mentions will have their image shown along with their bio, artist statement, C.V. and a link back to their website.

SALES: All sales are conducted between the artist & buyer. There is no commission.

one CUBE, or two?

I have finally resolved that consuming water is necessary. While I still prefer my beverage more dressed up than water, but I do get it. What I do not get is the temperature specificity. I have a friend that posts every nutritional fact she can find to social media. Her newest campaign suggests that cold water burns more calories than warm water. Completely flabbergasted by this possibility, I did my homework. The difference turned out to be 8 calories. EIGHT calories. Do you care about 8 calories? Me neither, but I do prefer my water cool. This next Call doesn’t care whether you like it hot or cool, they want to see it. And, it seems open to wide interpretation…

JUROR: Artist & instructor Glen Kessler holds a BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art & a MFA from the New York Academy of Art. Glen has been awarded a 2013 Maryland State Arts Council Grant, two Elizabeth Greenshields Grants, and the Prince of Wales Fellowship. His artwork is collected widely internationally, and is in the public collections of Prince Charles, Ford’s Theater, Yale University, The George Washington University, Boston University, Maryland Institute College of Art, and St. Mary’s College of Maryland. In addition to his own studio work, Glen is also a renowned teacher and mentor. He has taught avidly at both the university and community level for nearly two decades and in 2013 he opened his own art school, The Compass Atelier.

It snowed today, in March, in the South, after a couple of weeks of nearly L.A.-like weather. And, of course, I heard lots of grumbling about how produce prices were going to be sky high because of ruined crops. But, truth be told, most folks growing produce this time of year are growing in high tunnels that protect them from minor snow fall and light frost. And some fruit trees like apricots cold exposure amazingly well. This next Call offers exposure that is off benefit, not to be feared. Editor’s Note: I am well-aware of the hackneyed, trite promise of exposure as a payoff for exhibitions that only end up taking an artist’s time & resources offering nothing of real value in return. I don’t like them either. THIS is not one of THOSE as best I can tell. Unlike most billboard calls, there are NO production or participation costs outside of the entry fee. Musée is dedicated to exposing audiences to the most dynamic, unexpected, and cutting edge photography from both up-and-coming and established photographers, while working alongside the industry’s most prestigious artists, gallerists, curators, and collectors. Blanch’s work has been featured in individual and group shows, books, private collections, and has been published in The New York Times Magazine, Vogue, and Rolling Stone. She also teaches at the International Center for Photography and is a member of the APA.

AWARDS: Selected work will be displayed on billboards throughout Los Angeles. The show is promoted on the TBC website & social media channels. A map is created with artists’ information, website, location of board that can either be seen on an APP or downloaded from the website (past examples).

In 2013, the artist began using Photoshop to create constructed realities using her own photographic material. In 2017, Carol was awarded Critical Mass Top 50. In 2016, she was a finalist for Critical Mass and was invited to Review Santa Fe. Her images have appeared in numerous exhibits at The Center for Fine Art Photography, Houston Center for Photography, Phoenix Art Museum, Photo Place Gallery, Vermont Center for Photography, and A. Smith Gallery. The artist’s work has been featured in Adore Noir, Shadow & Light, Square Magazine, BETA – Developments in Photography, Adobe Create, and Lenscratch.

Did you know that water lilies are edible? ME EITHER. I tripped across Edible Wild Plants of Pennsylvania and Neighboring States by Richard J. & Mary Lee Medve from Penn State Press (©1990). Don’t ask how I ended up in this rabbit hole; let’s just blame Instagram or Pinterest. Not only are water lilies edible, now I have recipes too. I can’t find any reference for their flavor, but I’m guessing floral and grassy like most edible flowers & greens. THEME: Summer Song. The exhibition is open to varied interpretations of the subject, from literal to far-ranging. Representational images of summer-related sights, activities, impressions, or atmosphere—as well as surrealistic or abstract evocations inspired by the subject—are welcome. Expressions may range from images of sun, sea, surf, and verdure to a more melancholy awareness of summer’s last gasp, a prelude to fall. Artists may also respond to the musical aspect of this call for entries. One could interpret the rhythm of the season, composing a visual image of summer’s harmonies.
