CALL for ENTRIES: Color

Learn more about the Emotion and Energy of Color from art-competition.net!a rainbow of
FLAVOR

I’ve run out of pickled beets, and I’m nearly out of canned tomatoes.  I’m not sure if my mother canned less or if we just consumed more. Either way, the more colorful portion of my menu is highly dependent on spinach and carrots these days.  I love spinach and carrots, but there are only so many ways to eat them in a week.  Fingers crossed that Punxsutawney Phil got it right because I would welcome some early Spring color.  In the meantime, this Call is providing a colorful outlet.  Love this theme…

CALL for ENTRIES: Document

Learn more about the Documentary Essay Prize in Photography from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University!guilty PICS

Many of you ask if I take the food photos used in AAAD posts.  Occasionally.  I took this one (left).  But more often, the imagery is stock.  I really don’t document what I eat often enough to provide a library of images from which to choose.  I have tried to break myself of the habit of being “that” diner –the one whose food gets cold while they get the perfect angle– out of guilt that my family was suffering the consequences (cold, soggy food).  This next Call wants YOUR documentary images, food optional of course.  Investigate…

I talk to myself in the grocery store –okay everywhere.  But, it is worst in the grocery store.  In the produce section last week, I was standing in front of a mountain of shiny red apples when I muttered, “I don’t get it.”  As you know, I advertise my disinterest in the grainy texture & overly sweet flavor of many red varieties of apples on a regular basis.  I tend to prefer them green & tart; sue me.  My grocer had approx. 2 dozen green apples & 20 dozen red varieties for sale, hence the “I don’t get it.”  But this time, a woman in my age range was standing next to me while I muttered.  She turned, looked me in the eye & said, “If you don’t like apples, you’re not American.”  Really?  Is my nationality now determined by my fruit choices?  Lady, step away from the apples & toward the hard cider.  This next Call is all about being American.  Take a look…

” …to paraphrase Bertrand Russell: no one is interested in other people’s secret virtues. Whether it’s greed, narcissism, perversion, selfishness, wastefulness, vanity or other bits of wickedness, America is infamous for its vices.  American Vices invites you to crawl down into the belly of American immorality and show us what you find.” –from nonfictiongallery.com

Chalk menu boards are sort of a bummer.  I can appreciate the eco-friendly nature of the notion as well as the flexibility for casual restaurants to keep their menus updated and filled with fresh ingredients.  But I sure miss the illustrated paper menus.  Aside from the handful of chalk art geniuses out there, nothing really beats bad menu illustration.  Come on, you know you just had a flash back to your favorite childhood pizza joint’s drawing of the mustachioed chef complete with red neckerchief and checkerboard pants.  I suspect those illustrators aren’t going to be competing in this next Call.  Take a look…

CUKES

Cucumber frequently replaces crackers & bread in our house due to a family-wide wheat allergy.  I love the crisp texture coupled with the ridiculously low price.  If you have ever grown your own, you know that they fruit prodigiously, so they cost precious little.  But I have recently volunteered to pay more for my cucumbers.  No, I didn’t go organic; I went English.  I can’t go back.  English cucumbers aren’t usually waxed because plastic wrapping helps contain the moisture, and they are less bitter due to the smaller seeds.  But the true benefit for me is that they seem to spoil at such a slow rate that I never have to throw anything away.  The benefit outweighs the cost.  The return on this next opportunity is worth every penny too.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from WorkingArtist.org for the Working Artist Photography Award. This may very well be the simplest process for the amount of the return. $25 Entry. Don’t miss this one…

CALL for ENTRIES: Reflections

My toaster died.  I have had the same retro-styled, chrome toaster for 10+ years.  Who knew they lasted that long? It operated perfectly until about a year ago when it just quit toasting anything evenly.  I should probably have been sad to lose my faithful little toaster that could.  But, I hated it.  It was cool for about the first 15 minutes I owned it –before the finish began to reflect every stray speck in my kitchen.  My mother decided a red and toaster, far less reflective, would make the perfect gift.  We played, Mom.  This next call highlights all that is good about reflections.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from the 1650 Gallery (Los Angeles, CA) for Reflections. $35 entry & free matting and framing (pre-set sizes).  There’s even a way to avoid shipping.  This could be a great opportunity…
