save a TURKEY

Sweet potato casserole, and I’m done.  Turkey has never been a part of my family’s holiday traditions.  In fact we are so obsessed with sweet potato casserole with a pecan pie top, we really just eat the rest of the meal as an excuse to consume ridiculous amounts of casserole.  It serves as a side dish & dessert then late-night snack.  We until it is gone.  It takes the four of us about 2 days.  I feel the need to put on stretchy pants just thinking about it.  This next Call is a fun turkey project.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Submissions from Fireseed Arts Gallery (Framingham, MA) for 46 Million Turkeys, an all-hung project to raise awareness.  No entry fee.  It only costs a single stamp to ship.  If you are stuck in a rut, this is a great way to jump start your creativity…

My whole house smells like peppers & basil at the moment.  A recent Saturday trip to the farmers market ended with a huge surplus of these staples, but to prevent loss, I am dehydrated both.  Then I will grind, chop or crumble most of these into a smaller form for storage and use this winter.  This next Call could be an outlet for new work, but it could be an excellent way to compact and move out studies or older work.  I encourage you to contemplate cutting down your work.  Yes, I DID say, “cutting down your work”…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Fort Worth Community Arts Center (Fort Worth, TX) for 9×12 Works on Paper. This could be a great way to do a  little studio cleaning & resume building at the same time.  Take a look…

BLUE

There aren’t really any naturally-occurring blue foods–of which I am aware.  But maybe that is why I’m not a fan of color blue, with the exceptions of navy (almost purple) & turquoise (high green only).  Blue foods scream, “Plastic” every time I see them–from icing on cakes to the blue tongues of toddlers eating shaved ice.  I know; my food quirks never end.  This next Call is just the perfect shade away from blue.  Take a look…

TREATS

I am fascinated by small food & small restaurants.  There is something special about the smallest of goodies served in the smallest of places.  One automatically assumes great care has been taken because you have less real estate literally & figuratively to make an impression.  Sel et Gras in NYC was always on my list to try, but I heard it closed.  Do you have any suggestions I should try?  I suggest you  take part in this next study in tiny art.  This could be a good opportunity for some of you.

Check out this Call for Entries from the Pitt County Arts Council (Greenville, NC) for The Tiny Art Show at Emerge Gallery & Art Center.  If you are looking to add a line to  your resume from a legitimate arts organization, this is a great resource.  Take a look…

MENU

Frequently, the most memorable kitchen creations are happy accidents.  As much as I love a list, theme and a plan, sometimes I find myself in a situation that forces me to create a masterpiece from what I have on hand or try something new on the spur of the moment.  My favorite chicken-cheddar-broccoli soup came about as a necessary use of what I could find in the frig.  Now it is a winter menu staple in our house. This next Call is a show that is both un-juried & un-curated, but I KNOW this organization.  It will definitely be a show not to be missed, and you can be a part of it.  Please investigate this one…

If I had to give my cooking an art style, it would probably be collage.  I used to be a purist, a menu maker, a list writer.  Somewhere along the way I began the little-bit-of-this-little-bit-of-that method.  Dinner is now determined on whichever protein I thought to thaw out and whichever veggies were freshest, in-season and/or on sale.  When I try to make a plan, it never fails that whatever I had planned ends up not sounding like what I really want.  So, collage dinners are what we do now; it works for us.  This next Call is also about collage.  I like this one; take a look for yourself…

I only feel justified making pavlova during a holiday week.  Pavlova (like the one at left by Tanya Zouevis) a little like two meringues kiss–through sweetened whipped cream.  I think it has to do with the temporary nature of the fragile, crispy meringue and the fluffy (but easily flattened) whipped cream.  We’ve just finished with New Year’s Day, and I’m already looking for a holiday.  MLK Jr. Day doesn’t usually strike me as a day earmarked for indulgence.  What’s after the next holiday?  I’ll look into it.  In the meantime, this next Call is inspired by the temporary, but you can expand your repertoire past whipped cream.  Take a look…
