The school year returns soon. Many of you know I have a kid in college, so his impending exit will mark a change in my house like so many of you with students. My grocery bill will shrink, and his eating habits will change. At home, my son eats whatever is put in front of him. At school, he can choose to fuel himself on pizza and coffee 6 out of 7 days. I choose to believe not, but a quick glance at the bucks he spends on ‘bucks reveals the ugly truth… his degree will be sugar & caffeine-fueled.

What gets you through a work day? Do you have a routine or a vice? Is there a difference, or is the label just a way to guilt yourself into less-frequent indulgence? After a hard day in the studio recently, I picked up my keys and headed out, making a quick pitstop in my husband’s studio to let him know I was going. “I’m headed to the liquor store. Want anything?” I asked. “Day that good, huh?” *blink blink blink* “How about I work on dinner while you’re gone?” Smart man. This next Call is for those of you whose memory of late night projects & exam cramming are still directly behind you.

JURORS: Kate Mothes is founder and curator of Young Space, an independent, itinerant, online-offline contemporary art platform emphasizing early career & emerging artists. Kate received a Masters in Art History, Theory & Display from Edinburgh College of Art at the University of Edinburgh, and a Bachelors in Art History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has recently participated as a guest juror for BEERS London’s Contemporary Visions 2019, and was curator-in-residence at AucArt LAB, London, UK, in March 2019, and at PADA Studios in Lisbon, Portugal, in April 2019. When not traveling for exhibitions and projects, she is based in Northeast Wisconsin.

CALL for ENTRIES: Harrow

ORANGE you glad?

I’m going to have orange elbows any day now. I have been craving and eating carrots daily. In my area, they are usually around a dollar a pound for full size organics and make great chips for hummus, a great boost to Indian dishes, beautiful color in Buddha bowls. When my son was learning to eat real food, he preferred anything sweet or starchy, naturally, with a preference for carrots and sweet potatoes. His hands, feet, knees and elbows stayed a hilarious color of orange for a few weeks. I expect mine to turn any day now, ha.

Continuing with this week’s publication theme, I want to introduce you to Up the Staircase Quarterly if you’ve not yet had the privilege. Established in 2008, Up the Staircase Quarterly is an online journal of poetry, art, interviews, and reviews. New issues are published every February, May, August & November, unless otherwise stated. And for some of you that write poetry in addition to visual work, UtSQ nominates for the Pushcart, Best of the Net, and Best New Poets.

CALL for ENTRIES: 47th Int’l Show

I cheated on my husband with shrimp tacos. He’s contact allergic to shellfish, and on the rare occasion I eat a meal without him, my radar is firmly set on shrimp. I feel guilty while eating them, like I’ve cheated, and then have to go through a hazmat-style sterilization process afterward. But, shrimp.

I had that shrimp-y luncheon with my a friend, an accomplished realist painter. We spent time talking about our plans for the next weeks and months. She paints prolifically and noted, “I haven’t even been looking at Calls because I can’t do anything until Fall”. Between work for galleries that represent her, a couple of invitational shows and a museum solo show that comes down this week, she can’t lose focus. Realizing that kind of focus has been my goal for months, and I am beginning to see results, but it requires tuning out the things that don’t serve my focused goal.

Danielle has curated shows from Washington DC to Los Angeles, San Francisco to Toronto. In 2014 she published two books, titled “Creative Block” and “Collage”. Her third book, “Your Inner Critic Is A Big Jerk” was released in October 2016, and she is currently working a new book due out Fall 2018. Danielle has also had the great pleasure of speaking at TEDx, PIXAR, Creative Mornings, CreativeLive, and was interviewed for several video segments on oprah.com.

Winter is bearing down on my culinary sensibilities; it does every year. In need of tomatoes for a recipe, I ventured into the produce section of my local grocer on a mission. I was greeted with $4/lb. hot house tomatoes shipped in from a climate that should not require a hot house for them to flourish. The most amazing part is that I only had to buy one. Why? Because the one tomato I bought, while beautifully folded like so many of my favorite heirloom varieties, was dense like a cannon ball and nearly three-quarters the size of my head. CURATOR: Anne Eder is an interdisciplinary artist and educator from Philadelphia. She holds an MFA in Photography and Integrated Media from Lesley University College of Art and Design where she studied with Christopher James and has been employed as an adjunct professor. Eder teaches courses in alternative and material processes in photography and in interdisciplinary projects, and will be joining the roster of educators at Harvard University and at Penumbra Foundation in NYC this spring. She is also a reviewer for Lensculture.

AWARDS: The curator chooses 1st place, 2nd place & 3 honorable mentions. The 1st place winner will receive a review by one or more curators including a Q&A about the photographer’s work. In addition, their image will be on the home page for a month. 2nd place & honorable mentions will have their image shown along with their bio, artist statement, C.V. and a link back to their website.

Eating local is a tiny act that can have a huge impact. It isn’t a possibility for everyone, but I advocate eating local-ish. Chose the food that came from the place closest to you. Sometimes that is all you can do. Your taste buds will thank you, and it does reduce the emissions of the transport to your table. Right now, I can still get cherry tomatoes from not too far away, and I am eating them on everything. This next Call wants to you to explore tiny acts of rebellion. This is a great curatorial theme.

Tiny Acts Topple Empires

ELIGIBILITY: Open to any practicing artist creating work in the United States, with the exception of those currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree-granting program, is eligible to submit.

MEDIA: All media considered. The gallery is best-suited to displaying 2-D work, but can consider smaller and/or wall-mounted sculptural work & video. No size restrictions, but please note that wall height from ceiling to baseboard is 100”.

THEME: Rebellion. Bhandari invites artists to consider the manifold expressions of rebellion, and how they might be manifested in contemporary art. The exhibition takes its title from a quote in a 2004 essay by Danusha Goska, in which she writes, “when we study the biographies of our heroes, we learn that they spent years in preparation, doing tiny, decent things before one historical moment propelled them to center stage and used them to tilt empires.” The curator will consider work that engages with all types of rebellion: formal, material, political, and otherwise. Artworks engaging with notions of rupture, disruption, and change are sought.

CURATOR: Heather Darcy Bhandari is a New York City-based curator, writer, and arts advocate. Her book Art/Work, written with Jonathan Melber, will be published in its second edition by Free Press this month. Bhandari was a Director at Mixed Greens gallery in New York City from 2000 to 2016 before becoming Director of Exhibitions at Smack Mellon in Brooklyn, New York. Bhandari is currently developing independent curatorial projects, teaches at Brown University, and serves on the board of directors of visual art at Omi International Art Center.

I love an amuse-bouche as much as the next foodie. I love tapas & small plate menus too. But, I don’t understand the tiny food trends I am seeing. The videos of tiny food being made on tiny appliances? I am clearly missing something. I cannot find a point to the concept of tiny food except for the cute factor. Where food is concerned, more is almost inevitably better in my house. But there is a time & place for everything. This next Call is the perfect way to dive into tiny works.
