CUT YOU

I used to be the queen of the hand cut garnish and/or decorative knife skills.  I think tournée-cut potatoes simply taste better; I do.  But, my recent cooking laziness has forced me to return to a more fresh-cut approach, like carambola (star fruit).  I’ve looked at them decoratively for so many years, I’d forgotten how delicious they really are.  I have not forgotten how delicious the magazine hosting this next Call is however.  I’m thrilled to have them as a sponsor, and I wash bowled over when I received my last hard copy.  Simply beautiful (and tasty)

Check out this Call for Entries from Fresh Paint Magazine (online) for Issue 4.  Low entry fee & simply gorgeous.  Show ’em your strokes…

CUCUMBER

I’m on the lookout for a horned melon aka an African cucumber.  I tried one many years ago and remember the flavors of lemon, banana and cucumber, but because they are exceedingly rare, I can’t find one locally.  I suspect if I find one in the South, it will probably be imported and unripe.  Those tend to just taste like banana.  Keep your fingers crossed, or send me one if you run across it.  In the meantime, the next Call is a very rare illustration call.  Take a look…

3×3  ProShow

3×3 Magazine is entering its ninth year judging the world’s best contemporary illustration judged by some of the world’s top art directors, designers and illustrators.

Unlike many shows they have no boundaries, their entrants come from every part of the globe. They are still one of the best values around when it comes to entry fees and publication fees. And they continue to improve their entry process.

And unlike most show annuals that are on the bookshelves 3×3 Magazine’s annuals are prominently displayed on the newsstands in the US, Canada, the UK, Europe and parts of Asia where they are affordable to art directors and art buyers who may or may not be interested in illustration. There has been dramatic growth in the number of outlets stocking the 3×3 Magazine annual and the sales to art directors.

It is their mission to demonstrate the benefits of using illustration, this annual is their showcase.

Enter the $5 Art Contest today!here a CHICKEN

As I search for land for the straw bale house that my family intends to build, critters have become an issue. I am thrilled by the prospects of having chickens for eggs & goats for milk, but am I really dedicated to the biology of it all?  Do I really want to be married to the drama of a chicken coop and all the possible predators?  Do I really want to give up spontaneous long weekends due to a milking schedule?  It may BE all natural, but it doesn’t necessarily COME NATURALLY.  This next call wants your take on the art of biology, but it needn’t be all chickens and goats. Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Neoteric Abstract

pa-tah-to

What do you want for dinner?  I hate saying AND hearing this phrase because it is immediately followed by the shuffling of feet and avoidance of eye contact in the attempt to draw out the silence until my husband breaks the silence and makes the decision.  It isn’t that I don’t want to think about it; clearly I think about food ALOT.  However, I find it difficult to translate the abstract notion of what I want for dinner into the concrete dish that would be.  Getting from idea that I want comfort food to identifying that as potato soup with freshly grated Romano is, well, complicated.  I wonder if abstract painters have this same dilemma.  If YOUR work is abstract, check out this next Call…
