a HUNGRY summer

I’ve had my head down working and planning and growing. How about you? Spring always makes me take a second look at my process, while summer makes me kick into production mode. What are you doing to support your work? I am contemplating meal kits and taking a day off from the studio. I know that doesn’t make a lot of sense at first glance. But lunch is the bane of my daily schedule. Just when I hit a creative stride, it is time for some sort of meal prep for lunch. I live in a house with folks with dietary restrictions, and everyone eats lunch at home. So, I’ve been exploring options. Take out takes just as much time to pick up, and delivery is cost prohibitive. A lot of meal kits are labor intensive despite arriving with pre-prepped foods, and many of them are the wrong quantity or, again, cost-prohibitive. I’ve found one (Hungryroot & no, this is not sponsored) I think I am going to give a try. The ingredients look good, the sizing is right, the cost is manageable. I am excited about getting lunch off my plate, so to speak.

One of the other big stumbling blocks for me is juggling my boring-but-necessary household tasks with my work schedule. Finding time. I find it hard to work creatively when I am encumbered with a list of non-creative tasks to do at home. My husband more than carries his half of the burden, but someone still has to do my half, ha. So, I’ve been practicing taking one day off from the studio and trying to cram all of the household tasks I can into that day –laundry, appointments, meal planning, grocery shopping. It is a work in progress. I’ll be sure to give you an update before summer’s end. In the meantime, I’ve had two acceptances for publication in two different magazines, and I am inspired by the positive attention it has drawn to my work and added to my social media reach. So, I am offering a few publication calls this week. I am running close on deadlines, so don’t delay in submitting your work.

ENTRY FEE: $2-$3 for writing submissions, but cover art submissions appear to be no charge. Fees are waived for current subscribers.

AWARD: $100 for cover art, plus two copies of the issue in which the work appears and a one-year subscription. The cover will be printed in full-color, full bleed, with the magazine’s logo in overprint and will be reproduced on the magazine’s website and electronic publications. The size of the printed cover is 6.75 inches wide by 9.75 inches tall, so the image may need to be adjusted to fit the trim size.

I am having a tough day, not horrible, not life-altering, just tough. My mind is elsewhere, and I’m kinda wishing my body were too. Because it is a quiet day in the studio (code for I’m too tired & unmotivated to work), I decided to do a little paperwork, jot down some notes about some ideas that I can’t shake & scroll through Instagram hoping not to lose a half a day.

I came across today’s Artist of the Day, Kellee Mayfield‘s Insta feed, and almost every post that I clicked said, “What are you doing this weekend?”. I found somewhere else to be, Chateau d’Orquevaux, a French artist residency, to be precise. Mayfield spent some time there in the Fall and completed this series of work that transported me. There’s a food to her Insta feed with which many AAAD will appreciate as well. So, consider this my invitation to share… what are YOU doing this week?

I was on a flight from Chicago to Atlanta recently when the pilot announced it was going to be a very bumpy ride. I’m not a bad flyer, but it doesn’t stop me from white-knuckling the armrest everytime we drop a few feet. But sharing my flight was a 3-year-old girl, traveling with her father, all full of energy & curiousity. Everytime we would hit turbulence and drop a little, she would giggle & laugh & hold her stomach. For me, turbulence is a chance I’m going to die, for her, it is a stomach drop in the elevator or over the top hill of a rollercoaster. I will never experience airplane turbulence the same way. Perspective.

When asked (frequently BTW) about my favorite artist or style of art, my immediate reaction is to reject being backed into a corner by that sort of reductivism, but eventually my answer boils down to “perspective”. I want to be shown a different way to see, feel or be with something in the world, or not in the world as the case may be. I’ll take irony, sarcasm, absurdism, realism, surrealism or any other work that makes me better, or worse, for the experience. The wit of Austrian-based artist & illustrator, Alice Wellinger, today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, drew me in immediately. Why do you create? Do you have a physical response, or is the reaction solely an emotional or cerebal experience? Every week I manage to make a handful of Insta-worthy, perfectly staged lunches & dinners, completely by accident. More often, I conjure tasty dishes that are weirdly, mostly shades of brown due to carmelization, excessive de-glazing and a love for soy, fish, Worchestershire & all other sauces, brown & salty. As you might imagine, the brown food pics, outside of coffee & walnuts, aren’t really winners on social media, ha. My work is not brown or salty, but similar & not…

A few times per week I manage to pull off a perfectly Insta-worthy image of my work in progress –always at an off-kilter angle with short focus to blur unresolved issues and just the right light to allow a contrast-y filter to make me look like a rock star. It is deceptive and born out of equal measure of insecurity and social media pressure to look like I always have everything effortlessly under control. I have guilt, but not. I don’t like feeding into the notion that studio life needs to be glamourous, but I also don’t like exposing my vulnerability underbelly to nameless, faceless critics. Then enters this Call. As you might imagine, I read A LOT of Calls, and I like options for art publication. But THIS call is different. This call wants to see the mess. Finally, there is an option to show studio life, work-in-progress specifically. I think that this is the kind of aspirational we can feel good about –always real, likely messy & unresolved. Seeing yourself represented as an artist is important. This Call is the brainchild of one of our previously Featured Artists, Robyn Thompson. It is a project of her course work while working toward her Master of Arts in Social Practice, making this a great opportunity to lift up ourselves AND one of our very own.

“On The Easel (OTE), a new hybrid digital/paper magazine is seeking submissions of works in progress. We want to see the mess. We want to show the struggles.”

MEDIA: Open to all media. Despite the name, this Call is not restricted to painting. They “want to show work during its awkward teen years in the hopes that it will inspire folks to push through to bring it to fruition.”

CALL for ENTRIES: Go Fish

Ten years ago, I just quit eating tuna salad. I don’t know why. It has never been my favorite, but for some reason it just mysteriously disappeared from my menu-of-habit. I still eat chicken & egg salad. I even enjoy salmon patties on regular occasion. Hell, I even eat tuna fillets at dinner when I find a good deal, but mentioning tuna salad for lunch gets an immediate “no thanks.” Sometimes things just seem fishy.

In the art world, we’ve all become suspicious that someone has an alternative motive . I am leery of every call, every competition. If you read it here, it has passed a fairly thorough “seems fishy” investigation. The vanity galleries and fees-are-more-than-any-possible-reward scams are the easiest to see through. But what about the the newer spaces? The unconventional places? We want to support new endeavors from those whose passion is to serve artists and the development of best practices, but when is your “gut” enough to make it safe to gamble? When does is cease being fishy?

The landlord for my new studio space has me on high alert. It is 200 sq. ft. with power included for $50 per week. A steal right? But he is also willing to sink thousands of dollars into its renovation to make a 12-month studio space for me. Assuming the utilities are $50 a month, it will take him more than a year to recoup the cost for the renovation. Wouldn’t it be cheaper just to leave it as a storage space? Very fishy. Maybe he’s just trying to support the arts by breaking even on an unused asset. The verdict is still out. I’ll keep you updated.

WATER you up to?

It feels like it has been raining forever and may just never stop. Ever. I’ve never had a green thumb, but my grandmother tried to teach me the basic. I remember almost nothing she taught me except leaves turn yellow when you over water, and nothing is more exciting than the burst of the seed pod of a touch-me-not. So, while I can grow herbs on a windowsill, my dream of having a sustainable farming endeavor is a lost cause. But many of my friends are out there trying only to eat what they grow.

Realistically what do you grow end the land of never ending rain? Apparently taro thrives even in water logged conditions for up to weeks at a time. I could live on taro chips, right? Maybe not. Luckily I can still canoe to my local grocer. The rain is also making me hyperbolic, ha. I could paint the rain, I suppose, or gather rainwater to feed my watercolors for this next landscape call. I then I could use the prize money to buy aquaponic supplies.

Between granola and smoothies, I am on a constant hunt for decent fruit. This time of year, it is a challenge. The strawberries are horrific, fibrous little lumps. Bananas are great for smoothies but don’t dry well without sulfites. Cucumbers & pineapples are rocking my smoothies, but FRESH fruit is a struggle. (Yes, I can hear how that sounds.) Blueberries have saved me lately. They are relatively cheap and work in cereal and for pancakes & smoothies. If anyone has recommendations on how to dry them, I’m open to ideas. CALL for ENTRIES: Women Artists

COLD complication

As winter approaches, I am more & more distracted. I buy a handful of pantry items for single recipes. For example, I use canned cream-style corn in one indulgent corn pudding recipe and buttermilk only in cornbread. But, the problem arises because they look like similar items in the cupboard –anything canned or my regular milk. You only have to put buttermilk on one bowl of cereal to not want to make that mistake again. My solution? Organization. A simple letter or two scrawled on the container top has stopped me from wasting time and food over and over again.

In the studio, I am always walking the line between organized and over-planned. My instincts run toward scheduling, pre-planning, color-coding and efficiency. But, I also know that when I over plan, I have guilt when I stray from my original design that sometime keeps me on a path (that often isn’t really working) longer than I should. But if I don’t schedule at all, I end up procrastinating, the stereotypical downfall of beret-wearing artists in movies everywhere. This next Call is a perfect example. I love this publication. It is gorgeous. The art is phenomenal. Even their Insta feed is fun and inspiring. I keep thinking that the right work to submit will speak to me. As a result, here we are a year or two later, I’ve managed not to enter yet. So, let’s make a plan, be organized; enter early…

CALL for ENTRIES: New Contemporary

I have pureed everything today. I made black bean soufflé early in the day to go with the slaw-topped taco my husband made later. I cooked & pureed extra beans to put up in the freezer as a soup base for next week. Lunch was delivery pizza. Our mid-afternoon snack was a mango-peach-guava-banana smoothie. While my husband made apple-pepper slaw for our tacos, I processed a half-bushel of apples for applesauce. I have washed my food processor four times today. (Just a reminder, no dishwasher in my house.) I am trying to keep busy.

I mean, I did finish framing a commission while I am waiting for THREE past-due notifications. I need mindless busy. How do venues take our money and not notify on time? Why not just under-promise? Why not five themselves and extra week then surprise us all with an early notification? Of course, my imagination and insecurities ramp up to a 14 & I begin to assume that I haven’t gotten an email because I have been rejected, or, that I was so bad that I didn’t warrant a response. When left with too much time to dwell on it, I start to become paranoid like an 1990s sitcom and wonder if my phone is working or if email is out-of-order. Ridiculous. So, soufflé, soup, smoothie & applesauce. Noisy. Delicious. Busy.

This next Call is screaming my name. I’ve not been interested in a lot of galleries lately because I am looking to build a very specific profile for my resume. I am trying to patiently wait for the academic & publicly funded shows I really want. But I am digging this space. There are a number of great art hot spots in New Mexico, like Satan Fe. In fact, New Mexico is on my new short list of relocation possibilities. This gallery supports a reassuringly diverse art aesthetic and range of media. I like the unapologetic nature of this Call too. I’m hoping to get my crap together & enter. Let me know how it sounds to YOU.
