Check out this Call for Entries from The Billboard Creative for the 2016 Los Angeles Exhibition.  Only $27 to enter & no hidden fees if selected.  A exciting opportunity…

CALL for ENTRIES: Transience

Learn more about the Transience exhibit from L.A. Photo Curator!TO-MAY-TO to-mah-to

Here today, gone tomorrow –ah, transient tomatoes.  Just last week I was lamenting how many ways I could quickly preserve the abundance of tomatoes I brought home from the farmers market.  Now?  I have a handful of tiny Romas left before I have to suffer the grocer’s sad selection of hard, hot house harlots that pass as tomatoes. This next Call wants your take on transience, physical, mental or ethereal.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Mono No Aware X

Learn more about Mono No Aware X!natural ABUNDANCE

The downside of eating local, in season food is familiarity.  During the peak of Summer, I grown at the site of a  crookneck squash, in Fall it is the pumpkin.  But, I have found THE solution –unexpected parings.  Combining two familiar ingredients in an unexpected way can refresh the palate and your menu.  Pumpkin & oranges, white chocolate & sage, avocados & maple syrup. Try one.  Sometimes it is all about the right combination.  The next call offers a way for you to combine your work with film to spectacular effect.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries for Mono No Aware X.  Entry fee is a voluntary donation. You may have appropriate work.  This is NOT your average film festival.  Investigate…

CALL for ENTRIES: Nature

Learn more about the Nature Exhibit from art-competition.net!freckled FRUITAGE

Food imagery IS the visual brand of this site.  For years, I used primarily pristine images of perfect foods on crisp, white, burned out backgrounds. But in the past couple of years, my strategy has changed. I have concerns about how many people, children specifically, don’t know what natural produce looks like.  I’ve had many cashiers at the grocer offer to let me trade in a piece of organic fruit for something waxed, dyed & shiny for fear I was buying “bad” produce. Nature doesn’t care about symmetry, saturation or uniformity.  This next Call wants your take on nature.  Open to broad interpretation…

CALL for ENTRIES: Red 2

Learn more about the Red 2 Exhibit from art-competition.net!another shot of RED

Lamenting the end of red foods the other day, I completely forgot about rhubarb.  The further South you live, the later in the season you can harvest rhubarb.  It isn’t a common find at fresh markets in my area, or even at my grocer, in theory because it is a pain.  It is disease resistant and hard to kill, but it requires a well-fed diet of compost and/or manure each year and SO MUCH watering.  Nonetheless, I love rhubarb jam.  Rhubarb, sugar, lemon juice.  Simple, sweet & tart.  Try it; you’ll love it.  This next Call is looking for your red work, fruits & veggies are optional.  Delicious…

"Basalt Causeway" (burnt sugar) by Ruth Tabancay
“Basalt Causeway” (burnt sugar) by Ruth Tabancay

Why food?  I am asked all of the time.  Food & art are connected as inspiration, nourishment & care-giving.  Food is ripe with meaning.  My developing palate & the evolution of my culinary abilities (and responsibilities), as well as my attitude about the suitability of food, echo my growth through the years as an artist and arts administrator –all marking the passage of time. That’s why.

__

“I am attracted to objects that are already
infused with meaning.”
Ruth Tabancay

__

The most recent work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Ruth Tabancay, features the installation of burnt sugar forms that slowly melt during their installation.  Sugar marking the passage of time, marking the beautiful fluidity, ignoring your impatience or desire to know the destination.  Beautiful.

Be patient.  Take your time.  Enjoy the work of AAAD Artist of the Day, Ruth Tabancay!

“I vividly remember playing with dolls and stuffed animals as a young girl. They brought me comfort, pleasure and new coping skills and on occasion, solutions to conflicts. This current work is an attempt to recreate some of those childhood characters and to interact with them both as an artist and as a woman.” —Yana Goldfine

__

The experiences of our childhood help shape us –for the good or for the bad, often both.  But for me, my childhood was a strange place, disconnected from whom I chose to become as an adult.  Any time I am met face to face with an artifact of my youngest years, it gives me pause.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, sculptor Yana Goldfine is on a journey to revisit her own artifacts.  Where do they take you?
