I struggle with breakfast. Starting my morning with the proper fuel sets the tone for my day, but I struggle nonetheless.  My art year is not that different from my work day –both go better with a little preparation.  This concept of preparation is why I have been pushing art publication for the past couple of weeks.  This is the time of year to drive traffic to your website in preparation for the full swing of the exhibit season.  I understand that some of you like online opportunities and some of you prefer print.  This next Call offers both options, plus international distribution.  Get prepared…

DEADLINE:  February 25, 2017

NOTIFICATION:  By March 15, 2017

ENTRY FEE: £20-30 for 3 to 5 images (approx $25-38 USD)

JUROR:  Work chosen by jurors from the Beers London gallery.

AWARDS:  Artists selected by the guest curator will receive a 1-page or 2-page spread including a brief bio, website, and 2-3 images in print and digital formats. All published artists will receive a digital copy of the magazine and will be promoted on our website/social media.

DISTRIBUTION: ArtMaze Magazine is an independent international publication which will be distributed both nationally and internationally in stores and via the online store.  ArtMaze Mag will be available in New York (McNally Jackson Books), London (White Cube Gallery and Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery) and throughout the UK in select stores such as Magalleria (Bath), Magazine Brighton (UK) and others. Print and digital copies will also be available at artmazemag.com.

Except for a few specialty pieces, I’ve always owned white dishes.  I love color, but food has always been the creative expression for me –even when my husband spent two years as a commercial potter.  In recent years, we’ve begun slumping glass part time in a kiln shed built onto our back deck.  I am intrigued by the patterns and textures and colors as they meld together.  It make me want to make a different sheet of glass for every window in my house.  This next Call is a salute to that very visual framework.  Take a look…

Portraiture draws me in because I crave the human, the humane. But, aesthetically, the geometric and the abstract are the chosen wallpaper of my life.  I seek out the repetition of strokes and patterns of lines and symbols.   When I came across the work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Gyula Sagi, my thoughts went immediately to the human heartbeat and the comfort found in repetition.

It has been a revolutionary sort of weekend.  I am struggling to figure out what to make of the adults in this world.  While I am trying not to give up on people who should KNOW better, my heart finds relief in the children that DO better.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Richard Brocken, offers a view, often of children, that is reverent and ethereal, sometimes funny or mischievous.  Entirely humane.

We are, in total, comprised of the pieces and parts of our experience –both those celebrated and those survived.  The mosaic work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day Peter Vial speaks to that patchwork in such a visual way.  This work is so relatable, even though some of it is incredibly large.  I bristle at the ubiquitous Nietzsche what-doesn’t-kill-you quote because it typically comes across as condescension or gaslighting, but Vial’s sculpture is a celebration of life, regardless of circumstance. There IS a difference, and I appreciate that sort of optimistic realism.  No unicorns & rainbows.  Thanks, Peter.

Community is what you make it.  Creative endeavors are often solitary, singular.  I have, over the years, developed a love for creating my own artistic community online, worldwide.  When I learned of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Kelly Jo Shows, I instantly knew we were of similar ilk.  I appreciate how he reaches out to those whose work he knows and loves, but whose person he does not necessarily know at all. Bridging gaps of time and space… with shoes.

My favorite culinary masterpieces are created from the random remains of my refrigerator or pantry.  This is how lunch comes to be almost every day.  Left over veggies from salad or stir fry end up as spring rolls; emergency canned goods create the best vegetable soup.  Because I live in a more rural location, bad weather & poor grocery planning can result in a hungry household.  But a little creativity amongst the ruinous remains, turns out the most delightful surprises.  This next Call wants to see what you creat from what remains.  Take a look…

CURATOR:  Jody Miller spent 40 years as  a designer / animator for the television industry; her profession melded beautifully with her favorite pastime.  She still  passionately “chases the light” and tries to present a slightly darker, edgier view of that light & the mysteries that lie therein. Miller’s portfolio is represented by Lightbox Photographic Gallery in Astoria, OR.

Wading through this year’s schedule of exciting trips and new adventures has also left me mourning a loss of creative time.  But I make the schedule.  Do I over-schedule so I have a way to excuse lower production.  Is it self sabotage?  Is it a lack of inner connection to my creative self?  The work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Peter Bragino, reminds me that the ability to connect lies in all of us, but the will must be our own.
