CALL for ENTRIES: Water

Learn more from Art-Competition.net!WATER
from above or below?

So we are still trying to figure out the logistics of building our own farm.  We’re excited.  We are hoping to move early 2017.  We are working on alternative methods for everything: building, fencing, furniture, electric & sewer.  Then there’s the issue of water.  I can’t WATER goats and chickens and lamb or US without the water portion of the equation.  And while a stream is lovely, there are laws about permanently diverting water that merely goes through your property.  So my options are well water or cistern water.  Both have to be pumped and filtered for different reasons. Decisions, decisions, decisions.  This next Call recognizes water as the essence of life.  I’m thirsty…

Check out this Call for Entries from Art-Competition.net (online) for Water.  Competitions support free drawing lessons. If you are looking to increase your web exposure, take a look at these prizes…

Water

ELIGIBILITY: All artists age 18+

MEDIA: Open to any painting, drawing, mixed media, photography or digital medium.

THEME:  Work should connect the viewer with the essences of life: water. The work can reflect on the simplicity of a single drop to the power of a raging ocean. It is the most powerful force on earth.  It can humble us in the wake of a storm, provide us with endless energy.  It is necessary for our survival.  It can be the most destructive force on earth, and its beauty cannot be denied.  All life on earth is connected by the need for water.  Artists throughout history have captured it in all of its forms: drops, rain, storms, streams, lakes, rivers and oceans.

“I have always believed in establishing the sky tone, in general, as soon as possible. In sea painting the rest depends upon it because of the element of reflection.” — Frederick Waugh

Do you know what you call a spice cupcake without the cream cheese frosting?  A breakfast muffin.  My husband is dubious, but I say the notions of breakfast, lunch, supper and dinner foods are abstract at best.  Why must it be eggs for breakfast?  And how much difference is there between banana bread and carrot cake, really?  Mmmhmm.  This next Call is looking for the abstract, and they DON’T mean carrot cake OR banana bread.  Take a look…

Painting
The work of MEGAN ELIZABETH reflects an attitude of experimentation, analysis of the elements of accident & a curiosity regarding the beauty created by the transparency & overlapping of ideas. Washes in the paintings, elements of spontaneity & use of collage are fundamental in many of my works. My inspiration comes from waterscapes, sunsets, bright colors in nature & the silhouettes created by extreme light or darkness. Much of my work has been derived from experiences living in Spain, travels in the Caribbean and in Europe & growing up on the east coast of the US.

trick

Fresh fish is so close I can almost taste it.  No really, my husband literally goes around the corner to fish for brook trout that my municipality stocks the local river with from the government-run hatchery to ensure tourists can fish.  You can’t make up a story like that.  Well, yes, you can, but I didn’t; I swear.  No lake trip necessary.  But a trip to the sea would make for great inspiration for this next Call.  Here’s another opportunity…

CALL for ENTRIES: Everyday Objects

Learn more from unframed!FLIP IT
over

The offset spatula is my favorite cooking gadget.  I get asked all the time, and I suspect my answer is never what they expect.  A fancy food processor or expensive hand-forged knife would probably be more standard answer, but I love the offset spatula.  Personally, I prefer the 9″ offset spatula by Wilton (meant for cake icing).  I use mine to both to apply gel medium to canvas when making artwork and to flip grilled eggplant for my eggplant lasagna –with a thorough wash in between.  Sometimes it is the everyday object that means the most.  This next Call wants your perspective of the everyday object.  Everyone can work with this theme…

The exhibition confronts the viewer with a fascinating array of everyday, ordinary things, and in the process gets us to take a close look at the objects and our encounters with them in our daily lives.   They are overlooked, ignored or simply taken for granted.  This exhibit takes a close look at the all too frequently unnoticed objects that many artists are turning to for inspiration.

Nectarines, peaches & plums are back in season, and I am so excited.  The peaches and nectarines aren’t quite ripe, but I like fruit a little under-ripe.  Weird, I know.  But the plums are divine and perfect and beautiful all by them selves.  I don’t have plums AND anything.  Just plums.  Art exhibits, like plums, are fantastic all on their own.  This next Call gives you the opportunity to show all on your own.  Take a look…

Your mayonnaise is a great judge of character.  No, really, I haven’t lost my mind.  If you’re not vegan, and you hate mayonnaise, it is probably because you’ve never had anything but the homogenized, bland, store-bought variety.  Real mayonnaise, if fresh, is made of three simple ingredients: egg yolks, oil & acid.  I prefer farm-fresh eggs, olive oil and lemon.  The are hundreds of combinations each with their own quirks and complexities.  Mayo-making is an foodie’s artisan craft, and this next Call is a celebration of fine craft from basketry to furniture and everything in between.  Take a look…

It is ramp season in the Smoky Mountains.  I am thrilled to have a locally-grown, fresh vegetable of any sort after the winter of snow & ice we just endured–even if it gives us all dragon breath.  If you aren’t familiar, ramps are spring onions with a strong garlic smell and onion flavor.  They are called “spring leeks” elsewhere.  We’re using them in salads, soups, casseroles and atop nearly every dish consumed in my house right now.  You name it, we’re finding a way to eat them.  Another sign of Spring is this next Call.  Maybe this one is for you…

I’ve been craving crêpes with fresh strawberries and vanilla creme for a week.  As much as I love French food, my patience for cooking is limited these days, and crêpe-making challenges the patience of most.  But, since strawberries that actually smell like strawberries are starting to show up at the market, I am going to try to distract my crêpe-craving taste buds with fresh strawberries.  Wish me luck.  In the meantime, I imagine the jurors for this next show are casually eating crepes during the curation of this show.  Take a look…
