utopian DISTOPIA

This site does not debate political issues –except those that surround food.  But let’s speak generally.  The current political circus in the U.S. and abroad seems unreal to me.  I read quotes & sound bites everyday that indicate paint pervasively dark image of humanity.   Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Don Bergland stages glimpses of the surreal world –both utopian & dystopian– only previously imagined.  If feel like the perfect fit today. “I like to challenge accepted cultural dogma and ideology.  Each of my works features a theatrical set defined by a stage with actors, props, and a backdrop.  The actors in the set consist of everyday objects brought into combinations and interactions that attempt to elicit inquiry.  The content of the artwork focuses on themes such as time, aging, nostalgia, the footless pursuit of Utopia, and the conditions of ideology which disable our rational minds. Each image is constructed using conventions of visual realism, but with alterations that offer dreamlike possibilities. Themes and objects appear and re-appear. Each work becomes a framed snapshot of a moment in theatrical space, noticed briefly, and then forgotten once more, a fraction of time when reality is breached and a frozen glimpse into the mental theatre of Eternity is experienced, an opening when the viewer can catch the faint hint of cotton candy breezing in from the sideshow midway, the pastel moment of a lost memory, a slight reminder that the past is never absent, and that the future is always in front of us.” —Don Bergland

throw away DAYS

We’re on snow day THREE here in the Smokies.   I love snow.  I love lots of snow, in fact.  But, the stark isolationism associated with snow is not lost on me.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Anastassia Elias seemed the ideal person to illustrate this issue.   It is a very small world …and getting smaller everyday. These collages are interior to discarded cardboard / paper tubes like you might find inside a roll of paper towels or toilet tissue.  These simple silhouettes remind me to celebrate home, and remember it IS wherever YOU are.

from who i BECAME

We are a sum of our parts. You do not have to justify inspirational conflict or contradiction to me, EVER. Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Alex Janvier finds influence in the history of oppression of the Dënesųłiné and Saulteaux (aboriginal Canada) as well as the work of Wassily Kandinsky (Russian) and Paul Klee (Swiss).  Tsa Tsa Ke K’e, below, will become a mosaic at Rogers Place Arena in Edmonton, Alberta Canada, and will measure 45 feet in diameter.  Here’s what Janvier has to say of his inspiration:

From everywhere, from the land, sky, stars, moon, sun, the universe. From earth, land, water, woodland, prairie, mountains, and people, some animals. From memory of ancient stories, from music, to include the voice of God and his created nature. From the sound of the birds chirping From native drum songs, pow-wow from the heart, rather than the intellect. From my parents. From my tribe, Dënesųłiné of Cold Lake, and of parts of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, British Columbia, and the Northwest Territories. From my Creator, The Chief of all Creators of the finest art. From the angels who have consistently have watched my life, and the development of art, that I do. From my own inspiration acceptance of who I have become. From love, to be who I am, and who I became.” — Alex Janvier

visual POETRY

I appreciate a puzzle. And, I truly appreciate an artist that trusts me to figure it out for myself. Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, textile artist Tilleke Schwarz leaves gaps allowing the viewer to fill in incomplete narratives and stories, never presuming to spoon feed the entirety of the message.  A gift. Thank you. (continues below)

Daily life, mass media, traditional samplers and cats are major sources of inspiration. The result is a mixture of content, graphic quality and fooling around. The work can be understood as a kind of visual poetry. Every work contains narrative elements. Not really complete stories, with a beginning, a storyline, and an end. On the contrary, the viewer is invited to decipher connections or to create them. ” — Tilleke Schwarz

deep BREATHS

I met the talented James Dickey, the author of  the book Deliverance, many years ago. As I drove through the rural south today in search of the perfect patch upon which to grow the rest of my life, I felt the feral nature that must have inspired so much of the desperation with which the book reeks.  When my flight instinct kicks in, I need only look up to the trees to see the topmost tiny branches swaying in the biting cold air to find my calm again.  The work of today’s Artist of the Day, Fenella Elms, gives me that same sense of order in the disorder.  Calm in the chaos.

“Aspects of my past career in mental health continue to influence my work with clay: the subconscious approach, a sense of rhythm, attention to detail and difference. I don’t seek to put my experiences into the clay, but marvel at how they emerge.” Fenella Elms

simply BEAUTIFUL

Minimalism has so many faces. Some would have you believe it to be stark and cold and gray.  I find it comforting.  I disagree that minimalism must always be bare.  Even intricate design can be simple and clean and appreciable for their design.   Today’s Artist of the Day, Laird Bindrim, shows such beautiful restraint. Such beauty in simply waiting for the unfolding.

“Photography as a medium is immediate. The “taking” of a photograph is measured in fractions of a second.  An art form, that has the unique ability to show us a singular moment.  In this image, the person talking on the phone, my good friend, is calling home to his mother to let her know he’s arrived safely.  Albeit, three thousand miles away from her.  This was the view from the car where I waited and watched patiently as he consoled her.” Laird Bindrim

STRANGE and gentle

As the years go by, I have come to view the details with different eyes.   With people, I have a far greater capacity for empathy even without intimate knowledge of every detail.  But with art, I find myself captivated by the minutia.  I enjoy dissecting the elements.  The sculpture of today’s Artist of the Day, Ellen Jewett, keeps me busy for hours.  A cursory glance may reveal spectacular figurative work, but the individual elements offer tiny narratives to be combined into a more complicated world view.  Mesmerizing. “At first glance my work explores the more modern prosaic concept of nature: a source of serene nostalgia balanced with the more visceral experience of ‘wildness’ as remarkably alien and indifferent.  Upon closer inspection of each ‘creature’ the viewer may discover a frieze on which themes as familiar as domestication and as abrasive as domination fall into sharp relief.”Ellen Jewett

hot weather, cold WATER

It has been unseasonably warm in the Great Smoky Mountains this past week — 70+ degrees in mid-December.  While I appreciate the bonus, it also made me think of the AAAD’s Artist of the Day Pedro Marzorati.  His work is a perfect physical embodiment of climate change, and it changes based on your perspective, time & place.  Simply perfect. “The statues speak for us, it’s a way of interrogation,
just ask yourselves!”
–Pedro Marzorati

“Where the Tides Ebb and Flow” was introduced for the first time in 2008, as a part of Land Art “Kielzog” festival, near Amsterdam & then again at the “Sentier du Rhone 2009” festival, in France.  The sculptures illustrates the human silhouette that are more or less submerged in water depending on the increasing water levels.

gone NOT FORGOTTEN

Upcycling is close to my heart.  As with many, my obsession with the reuse of discarded objects resulted from the collecting of “art supplies”.  Consider the previous quotes as air quotes from my bemused husband.  Collecting fueled my love for upcycling AND assemblage.  Today’s Artist of the Day, Freya Jobbins has such a smart sense of irony & humor.  This work is a delightful comment on consumerism and the untouchable nature of the creative object. ““I am interested in generating a range of responses to existing cultural objects, which have been placed out of context. The irony of my plastic works is that I take a material that was created to be touched, and I make it untouchable as an artwork.” ” Freya Jobbins

creative ISOLATION

As the new year approaches, I find myself more isolated and in my head as I set goals for the year and contemplate creative direction. Today’s Artist of the Day, Liz Huston captured my inner dialogue with storytellers of her very own.  The pieces below that spoke to me are from a couple of years ago.  But please take the opportunity to look at her new work and find your own story. “I am fascinated with the way memory influences how stories change and evolve over time.  This happens not because the facts change, but because the inner orientation of the storyteller has. Their perspective grows; expanding and contracting with experience. The storyteller journeys us deep into the timeless aspects of the human experience; the kingdoms of love and loss, through grief, resolve, growth and into the balance of purpose… This time traveler, this storyteller, unites the treads of time–leading us home, bringing us back into ourselves.” Liz Huston
