It is all a matter of taste, right? I know that for every food there is someone who believes its tastes better than all other foods, but I still can’t quite resolve myself to the notion that some foods aren’t just objectively bad. Warhol is famous for, among other things, depictions of a soup. That same soup is the foundation for thousands of green bean casserole recipes. SOMEone believes it to be “Mmm mmm good”, but I am not one of the some. I don’t have a lot of food limits, aside from Century eggs and boiled okra, but just no. It is a black and white issue for me –just like this next Call. Investigate this opportunity…

The Moth Art Prize

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Figurative or representational paintings, drawings (including mixed media) & original prints.

DEADLINE: May 1, 2016

NOTIFICATION: June 1, 2016

ENTRY FEE: €20 (approx. $23 USD) for 5-10 works

AWARDS: The Moth Art Prize consists of a month-long retreat at a newly renovated barn in a beautiful lakeland setting in rural Ireland, along with a travel stipend of €1,000 (approx $1144 USD). The barn, which features a studio and living area downstairs and open-plan accommodation upstairs, is situated along a quiet country lane, surrounded by lakes. The nearest village of Milltown, which has a shop and a pub, is a few kilometers away. A bicycle will be provided, and the publishers of The Moth will be on hand to take you to the nearest town for provisions.

The winner chooses what month of the year they would like to spend at the barn. There is room enough in the barn to accommodate a partner and up to three children, if you should wish to travel en famille. There is no onus on the artist to produce a body of work while staying at the barn. We want it to be a place to rejuvenate and be inspired.

If you have an interest in being an Artist of the Day, we want to hear from you! Look in the juror section for an add’l bonus!

I try not to publish personal posts often. But you were so kind when I lost my father a few years ago, that I thought I would share. Here’s the whole #saveERNIE story. ARTIST of the DAY: Melissa Hill

Some days are tougher than others. On the toughest of days, I wish for the ability to see things through a larger lens, if you will. I wish for perspective. The ability to see things without the subjectivity of whim or personal tragedy or privilege. Surely a different view would lend answers to the who and the why. Or maybe just compassion and tolerance for others, for oneself. The work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Melissa Hill, gave me just a glimpse of that perspective I crave. (continues below).

I have such reservations about corn but none about corn pudding. We had it for dinner tonight. I always think of corn as hailing from Iowa. (I am clearly like a marketing sponge.) My brain spins. And my mouth usually keeps up. I turned to my husband recently & asked, “Are your ears tired? I can’t seem to shut up.” I struggle to quiet my mind, hence twenty years of insomnia. Some days I require a sole project or a single object upon which to focus to have a more solitary soundtrack in my head. I find the work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Mark Castator, requires me to concentrate on the forms within the form which is oddly calming. (continues below)

I am not a fan of buffet restaurants. Even when I get past the being herded like school children through a cafeteria line, I have trouble with all inclusive nature. How can one hold everything at a single temp & humidity and expect everything to thrive? Some foods are fragile. Celery & carrots require higher humidity. Dairy needs a lower temp than washed greens. In exchange for larger variety, we end up with mediocre versions of fresh food that would have better maintained their individuality in a kitchen. This next call is a hand-picked selection of the highest quality, not a buffet. Interested? Me too.

I like to think I eat fairly clean. But by coincidence, I ran out of all of my standard sauces at one time which necessitated my seeing them ALL in my shopping cart at once. Who new?
