hold the SHRIMP

The people with whom I eat most often have lots of food allergies –milk, shellfish, wheat.  So how does a food co-exist with food allergies?  The secret is parallel thinking.  For example, I need to make chili paste for Thai dishes, but my husband is deathly allergic to shellfish.  Who might love Thai food, but naturally wouldn’t eat shrimp?  Vegetarians.  Vegetarian chili paste is made with shiitake mushrooms as the substitute for shrimp. Problem solved.  This next Call is about coexistence, diversity & inclusion on a much larger scale.  Take a look…

snowy APRICOTS

It snowed today, in March, in the South, after a couple of weeks of nearly L.A.-like weather.  And, of course, I heard lots of grumbling about how produce prices were going to be sky high because of ruined crops.  But, truth be told, most folks growing produce this time of year are growing in high tunnels that protect them from minor snow fall and light frost.  And some fruit trees like apricots cold exposure amazingly well.  This next Call offers exposure that is off benefit, not to be feared.  Editor’s Note: I am well-aware of the hackneyed, trite promise of exposure as a payoff for exhibitions that only end up taking an artist’s time & resources offering nothing of real value in return.  I don’t like them either.  THIS is not one of THOSE as best I can tell.  Unlike most billboard calls, there are NO production or participation costs outside of the entry fee.  So, take a look; maybe this one is for you…

Check out this Call for Entries from The Billboard Creative for 2018 Los Angeles Billboard Exhibition. Entry fee is only $27, and the curator is research-able.  I liked this one enough to enter…

Learn more from The Billboard Creative!FRESH on the street

My heart beats for the east coast, but my stomach is devoted to the other coast.  I love that fruit vendors are to Los Angeles what the pretzel cart is to NYC.  I can’t defect over fruit, but I can ask… the next time you are handing a few bills to a street vendor, look up.  If you don’t see your art on the billboard above, then this next Call may be for you.  Take a look…

FRANKS

How much do you love road food?  No.  I don’t like it either.  We’re on the road for four days over the holiday weekend, and I am arming myself with a car-load of snacks to combat the power of suggestion of every digital billboard that suggests I check my “fry guage”.  Has a nugget of any sort every made your trip better?  Has a peeling truck stop billboard every really followed through on making your ride more pleasant with week-old doughnuts and day-old franks?  Damn the billboards.  Or not.  Let’s channel the power of suggestion for art like with this next call.  Take a look…
