I have finally resolved that consuming water is necessary. While I still prefer my beverage more dressed up than water, but I do get it. What I do not get is the temperature specificity. I have a friend that posts every nutritional fact she can find to social media. Her newest campaign suggests that cold water burns more calories than warm water. Completely flabbergasted by this possibility, I did my homework. The difference turned out to be 8 calories. EIGHT calories. Do you care about 8 calories? Me neither, but I do prefer my water cool. JUROR: Artist & instructor Glen Kessler holds a BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art & a MFA from the New York Academy of Art. Glen has been awarded a 2013 Maryland State Arts Council Grant, two Elizabeth Greenshields Grants, and the Prince of Wales Fellowship. His artwork is collected widely internationally, and is in the public collections of Prince Charles, Ford’s Theater, Yale University, The George Washington University, Boston University, Maryland Institute College of Art, and St. Mary’s College of Maryland. In addition to his own studio work, Glen is also a renowned teacher and mentor. He has taught avidly at both the university and community level for nearly two decades and in 2013 he opened his own art school, The Compass Atelier.

It snowed today, in March, in the South, after a couple of weeks of nearly L.A.-like weather. And, of course, I heard lots of grumbling about how produce prices were going to be sky high because of ruined crops. But, truth be told, most folks growing produce this time of year are growing in high tunnels that protect them from minor snow fall and light frost. And some fruit trees like apricots cold exposure amazingly well. This next Call offers exposure that is off benefit, not to be feared. Editor’s Note: I am well-aware of the hackneyed, trite promise of exposure as a payoff for exhibitions that only end up taking an artist’s time & resources offering nothing of real value in return. Blanch’s work has been featured in individual and group shows, books, private collections, and has been published in The New York Times Magazine, Vogue, and Rolling Stone. She also teaches at the International Center for Photography and is a member of the APA.

Birds and insects dance around us in magical aerial ballets. Animals dazzle us with their colors and patterns. They evoke feelings in us of fear and love. CURATOR: Carol Erb is a Los Angeles based artist who studied painting and drawing at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and graduated with a BA from DePaul University. In 2013, the artist began using Photoshop to create constructed realities using her own photographic material. In 2017, Carol was awarded Critical Mass Top 50. In 2016, she was a finalist for Critical Mass and was invited to Review Santa Fe. Her images have appeared in numerous exhibits at The Center for Fine Art Photography, Houston Center for Photography, Phoenix Art Museum, Photo Place Gallery, Vermont Center for Photography, and A. Smith Gallery. The artist’s work has been featured in Adore Noir, Shadow & Light, Square Magazine, BETA – Developments in Photography, Adobe Create, and Lenscratch.

AWARDS: The curator chooses 1st place, 2nd place & 3 honorable mentions. The 1st place winner will receive a review by one or more curators including a Q&A about the photographer’s work. In addition, their image will be on the home page for a month. 2nd place & honorable mentions will have their image shown along with their bio, artist statement, C.V. and a link back to their website.

Suggs has been awarded several grants & honors, including the NC Fellowship Award, a city of Richmond CultureWorks Grant, and a residency at the Quirk Hotel & Gallery in Richmond, VA. Her work is part of several corporate collections, and she is currently a curator at LIGHT Art + Design.

AWARDS: Cash awards totaling $2,000 will be presented at the exhibit’s Opening Reception –Best in Show ($1000), 2nd Place ($500), 3rd Place ($250), 2 Merit awards ($125 ea.) & an award from Fast Frame.

While on vacation recently, I was having dinner in a restaurant only to see the chef come out and clip herbs off a wall planter in the dining room. I have a friend that has installed a decorative green wall in their livingroom. And I know several others that are making vertical gardening plans. It seems planting vertical not only makes the best use of space, but it is more physically accessible for lots of people for whom bending and stooping are not an option. Walls of food, how lovely. These works have appeared broadly, from The Metropolitan Museum, to the NYC Parks Dept., to The New York Times. Kaiser graduated from New York University and is currently working on a series of temporary sculptures for Storm King Sculpture Center and Socrates Sculpture Park.
