FOOD

My favorite restaurant as a kid had tables covered in butcher paper & bowls of pencils & crayons. I had to be forced to stop drawing in order to eat my dinner.  Just imagine if I could have had dinner with Victor Nunes.  Check out these drawings with walnuts (left). Check him out on Instagram & Facebook for more drawing with food.  This next Call wants your drawings, but the food is optional.  Take a look…

“Drawing is the original art and language of man and continues to allow us to communicate what we see and feel. A drawing can be formal and refined or expressive and energetic, can even capture our thoughts with doodling. Marks, lines or shaded areas expresses our external world and our individual thoughts. It is a record of who we are as humans and our need to connect with each other.” –from art-competition.net

My kitchen smells of heavenly green cardamom.  It IS expensive, and I AM cheap.  But, I never regret the purchase.  I offset the expense by buying it ground instead of in the pod.  It loses flavor quickly when you store it ground, but cardamom is used in a huge number of cultures for dishes both sweet & savory.  It is a staple of Indian & Thai foods, but it is also found in Nordic breads & sweet treats.  You will love what cardamom will do for rice pudding or hot tea.  This next Call is international, just like my kitchen.  Take a look…

Confluence of public health and food labeling took a step forward when nutrition facts were added to processed foods.  I promise I won’t go into my issues with processed food or the FDA this time.  The fact that nutrition facts exist on packaging leads me to believe that the interest of both the food industry and consumers can merge into content labeling regarding the origin of food as well.  Fingers crossed.  This next call is a Confluence of art and fine craft with an excellent retail opportunity.  Investigate…

How many perennial vegetables do you know?  There are a few like asparagus & horseradish that aren’t strangers, but there is a whole world of beauties like Jerusalem artichokes, Egyptian onions, Good King Henry & yummy ostrich ferns (aka fiddleheads).  Doesn’t the idea of planting a vegetable once and harvesting for up to 20 years sound like a dream? Granted there are the complications of disease control, smaller harvests & garden takeover, but sometimes one planting can be fruitful for years.  This next Call only happens once per year, but it could pay off for years to come.  Investigate the options…

I’ve been studying food preservation, from pickling & water-bath canning to vacuum-sealing & salt-packing.  I’ve run across a huge amount of admirable testing, experimentation and success amongst food-enthusiasts, homemakers, homesteaders, preppers & gardners alike.  I am open to almost anything culinary at least once, but some folks are out there just purposely trying to make food, well, wrong.  Koolickles.  I am almost beyond words this time.  Koolickles are created by soaking dill pickles in a mixture of Kool-Aid® & pickle brine.  Being open doesn’t always work in my favor, but this next Call definitely does.  They are open to almost anything, and it doesn’t have to be Koolickles, I promise…

I love tamales.  My life has been dotted with expert tamale makers–the Mexican version.  Then I tried Guatemalan tamales.  Oh my.  The differences are subtle, but important.  In Guatemalan tamales, the corn used to make the masa (dough) is not sweet, and they are usually wrapped in  leaves, not corn husks.  Tamales can come in red & black varieties, both sweet & savory, both large & small.  If are the winner of this next Call, they pick up the tab for your ticket & hotel to the opening.  Be sure to pick up a tamale while you are in Guatemala!  Take a look…

My kiddo just turned 16.  For his birthday, he didn’t ask for pizza or burgers; he wanted Indian food.  So proud.  Since his palate took a huge left turn a couple of years ago, eating out with him has been a voyage of firsts.  The first taste of Baingan ka Bharta (a spicy mash of eggplant & tomatoes) & Goat Korma were adorable.  And hopeful.  Finally I can rest knowing that I might have put another foodie out into the world that is willing to eat adventurously.  This next Call could be a first opportunity for you at the first show for this gallery.  Investigate…

KITCHEN

It isn’t about how little you spend; it is about how little you throw away.  That is the key to keeping our household food budget on track.  We throw very little away.  When celery goes limp or carrots dry out, we add them to the collection of chicken bones in the freezer to make stock.  I haven’t purchased broth or stock in years.  A little cream  makes a whole new meal from left overs.  Overly ripe fruits make fantastic preserves, coulees, granitas & trail mix.  Stale bread makes great croutons.  Don’t let throwing things away become the habit, recycle or re-use or re-invent it–even food.  This next Call wants your insight on garbage re-use & reduction.  Love this one…

Today we swim in garbage.  The world we live in is over populated, over polluted, over everything.  How we deal with garbage needs a new approach, a new way of dealing with this overgrowing problem. ICE

Can someone bring me a mango ice shave?  I have been desperately trying not to whine about the heat, but you could stave off my whining with a shave ice.  Really.  Don’t bring me a snow cone; it isn’t the same thing.  It is about the location of the syrup.  In a shave ice/ice shave, the shaving creates a snow-like texture that absorbs the syrup.  In a snow cone, the ice is crushed causing all the syrup to settle to the bottom. Don’t try a shave ice unless you are prepared to never eat a snow cone again. Really.  You can’t keep your hot weather, but don’t keep your hot pics.  This next Call is a great distraction.  No shipping required…

I don’t drink coffee.  For all of my open-palate talk, there are things I am simply not interested in consuming.  Coffee is one of those things.  For many of you, this is heresy, sacrilege, blasphemy.  I suspect it would be like my reaction to people that don’t like chocolate–incomprehensible. But, I break my own rules.  When I go to the “home” of something, I feel obligated to partake.  Don’t you have to drink coffee in Washington?  Maybe I could just visit Java Jive and listen to a few tunes in the giant coffee pot instead.  Or consume a little art just a couple of hours down the interstate.  I’m game. How about you?
