ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists. You may notice that we have eliminated the Featured Artist program in an effort to publish more of the ART in our name, Art & Art Deadlines. If you have an interest in being an Artist of the Day, we want to hear from you! Look in the juror section for an add’l bonus!

MEDIA: Are we including all the media Calls you want? Am I missing something? Am I under-representing your media? Please tell me. I largely post at the request of jurors and gallerists, so sometimes I unintentionally wear blinders.

JUROR: R.L. (Rachel) Gibson, continues to be the Editor. Me. Publication has been a bit sporadic lately because of events that left my family stranded in rural Virginia for a while. Dramatic, I know. I try not to publish personal posts often. But you were so kind when I lost my father a few years ago, that I thought I would share. Here’s the whole #saveERNIE story. So many of you ask me if there is anything you can do to help out at AAAD. There is. We intentionally create leftovers by overcooking dinner so that we have a few easy options for lunch on hand. But, left over veggies that didn’t get fully used in salads or stir frys become the best fillings for spring rolls. We’re a little addicted. Have I mentioned that rice paper is my newest obsession? As much as I appreciate their function, I’ll admit that how little room they take up in the pantry and the fact that they seemingly never expire may very well make them the perfect bread replacement. JUROR: Carter E. Foster is the Curator of Drawing at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. In a museum career spanning 20+ years, Foster has specialized in the history of drawing & continuities of artistic practice in Europe & America from the Renaissance to the present. He has held curatorial positions at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the L.A. County Museum of Art, & Whitney Museum of American Art, where he is currently the Curator of Drawing. A specialist on the work of Edward Hopper, he recently organized the exhibition Hopper Drawing. Foster also writes extensively on post-war and contemporary American art.

SALES: All work must be for sale. The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences will retain a 40% commission of the purchase price on all works sold during the exhibition.

Beautiful food is enticing. Culinary schools offer classes that teach presentation for a reason. But ugly food has its place. I had lunch with a friend yesterday; she insisted I pick the restaurant. I chose Indian food only to discover she had never eaten Indian food. I felt the need to warn her that the food was delicious, but ugly. Maybe ugly is a little too strong. Some days are tougher than others. On the toughest of days, I wish for the ability to see things through a larger lens, if you will. I wish for perspective. The ability to see things without the subjectivity of whim or personal tragedy or privilege. Surely a different view would lend answers to the who and the why. Or maybe just compassion and tolerance for others, for oneself. The work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Melissa Hill, gave me just a glimpse of that perspective I crave. (continues below).

My next kitchen will not have cabinet doors. My need for symmetry & years of practice in downsizing lend to neat kitchen cabinets. There are exceptions: storage containers whose lids hide like socks in a dryer and the lazy Susan corner cabinet that probably has unflavored gelatin from 2010 hiding in the shadows. I am moving to an all new, albeit all tiny, space in 12 to 18 months, and all the kitchen storage will be open. All light and no shadows for me. Time for planting decisions has arrived. We’re probably clear of the last frost where I live, but now it is time for mama black bears and their cubs to begin wandering out of their dens. In fact, critters all seem to be ready to get the season started. So, how do I choose to what to plant? I need hardy veggies that aren’t overly attractive to foraging wildlife. Then there is what we have dubbed the fern-factor. There seem to be some things, I simply cannot grow; tomatoes & ferns are on the short list. Funny how gardens differ based on the gardener. However, figures within landscapes can play dynamic roles as scale elements, protagonists in a narrative, or mysterious presences. AWARDS: The curator will still choose one 1st place winner, one 2nd place winner & 3 honorable mentions. The 1st place winner will receive a review by one or more curators including a Q&A about the photographer’s work. In addition, their image will be on our home page for a month. 2nd place & honorable mentions will have their image shown along with their bio, artist statement, CV & a link back to their website.

Plus, ALL entrants’ work will be exhibited online in a group on-line exhibition. In keeping with the mission of creating exposure opportunities and PR, L.A. My brain spins. And my mouth usually keeps up. I turned to my husband recently & asked, “Are your ears tired? I can’t seem to shut up.” I struggle to quiet my mind, hence twenty years of insomnia. Some days I require a sole project or a single object upon which to focus to have a more solitary soundtrack in my head. I find the work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Mark Castator, requires me to concentrate on the forms within the form which is oddly calming. (continues below)
