CALL for ENTRIES: Choice Awards

Learn more about the Choice Awards from CENTER in Sante Fe!DINNER before dessert

Give my choice, I will take acidic or fatty foods over the super sweet.  Give me the zing of wine-laden vinegar or the melt of a beautiful ghee in place of your sugar-crusted desserts.  My palate has transformed over over many years.  Don’t misunderstand, I still love a good cupcake, but I long for more complex choices.  This next Call is an easy choice to make, and a sweet win if you get it.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Back to the Garden

Learn more about the Back to the Garden exhibit from Root Division!TROPICAL delights

Citrus & avocados just became an option again.  For years, my family has been considering locations for relocating, mostly in the eastern U.S., north of the Tennessee/Virginia line.  But after our years of circling the same section of the map, an opportunity much closer to the equator has presented itself.  While I should be concentrating on finding a place to live and all the details that follow, all I can think about is mangoes and avocados, and option I never imagined possible.  While I get back to the garden planning, this next Call offers you a chance to get back to the garden as well.  I love this venue & I’m guessing you will too…

CALL for ENTRIES: Windows

Learn more about the Windows edition of Don't Take Pictures!clink CLINK

Except for a few specialty pieces, I’ve always owned white dishes.  I love color, but food has always been the creative expression for me –even when my husband spent two years as a commercial potter.  In recent years, we’ve begun slumping glass part time in a kiln shed built onto our back deck.  I am intrigued by the patterns and textures and colors as they meld together.  It make me want to make a different sheet of glass for every window in my house.  This next Call is a salute to that very visual framework.  Take a look…

___
Portraiture draws me in because I crave the human, the humane. But, aesthetically, the geometric and the abstract are the chosen wallpaper of my life.  I seek out the repetition of strokes and patterns of lines and symbols.   When I came across the work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Gyula Sagi, my thoughts went immediately to the human heartbeat and the comfort found in repetition.

pretty PROVISIONS

Design impacts my food choices.  Bad or excessive packaging will decrease the chances that I will try a processed food.  And what’s with fruit like apples and oranges in individually wrapped packages?  Don’t they already have their own packaging?  I recently discovered that I am not the only one that chooses wine, at least in part, based on the label design.  It is okay; you can admit it too.  Design is a huge part of the impact of this art magazine.  I love this publication.  Maybe you will too…

It has been a revolutionary sort of weekend.  I am struggling to figure out what to make of the adults in this world.  While I am trying not to give up on people who should KNOW better, my heart finds relief in the children that DO better.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Richard Brocken, offers a view, often of children, that is reverent and ethereal, sometimes funny or mischievous.  Entirely humane.

Reflections no. 4: Politics (mosaic 56 x 15 x 36 cm) by Peter Vial

“Watch from your gut, listen to your soul” Peter Vial

___

We are, in total, comprised of the pieces and parts of our experience –both those celebrated and those survived.  The mosaic work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day Peter Vial speaks to that patchwork in such a visual way.  This work is so relatable, even though some of it is incredibly large.  I bristle at the ubiquitous Nietzsche what-doesn’t-kill-you quote because it typically comes across as condescension or gaslighting, but Vial’s sculpture is a celebration of life, regardless of circumstance. There IS a difference, and I appreciate that sort of optimistic realism.  No unicorns & rainbows.  Thanks, Peter.
