JUROR: Emily Williams creates detailed glass sculptures inspired by the natural world. Her glass sculptures explore complex plant & sea life forms. Science & natural history have always played a strong role in her life. She began teaching sculpture in 1989 at Clarion University of PA. Over the years she has shared her passion for sculpture with her students. Williams has received a number of grants and awards through the years, including a Fulbright Hays grant to study in Italy. Williams was awarded her M.F.A. in Sculpture from Washington University in Saint Louis, MO.

AWARDS: Juror’s Awards will be named by the juror and announced at the Awards Reception on Sunday, November 12, 2017. These are cash awards for high-quality work. Purchase Awards will be named by the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery and will become part of the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library’s permanent art collection. Awards are sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

CURATOR: Karen Klinedinst is a landscape photographer based in Baltimore, MD and a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Her landscape photography has been exhibited widely, including: Massoni Art Gallery, Soho Photo Gallery, The Center for Fine Art Photography, Griffin Museum of Photography, and the Biggs Museum of American Art. Her work is in the collection of the National Park Service. She was a 2006 National Park Service artist-in-residence at Acadia National Park in Maine; and in 2015, was awarded an Individual Artist Award from the Maryland State Arts Council.

AWARDS: The curator chooses 1st place, 2nd place & 3 honorable mentions. The 1st place winner will receive a review by one or more curators including a Q&A about the photographer’s work. In addition, their image will be on the home page for a month. 2nd place & honorable mentions will have their image shown along with their bio, artist statement, C.V. and a link back to their website.

Food substitutions have become second nature to me. I live with & cook for lots of people with food sensitivities, health concerns & philosophical/ethical food issues. I have to be able to accommodate those folks without advance warning and without blowing my food budget. Black beans make great gluten-free brownies; bananas work as egg replacement in many desserts & breads. Lemon zest can be a fantastic salt alternative, & nutritional yeast is a great stand-in for Parmesan. It isn’t about faking an ingredient; it is about creatively coming up with an alternative texture or taste. This next Call is all about the creative. I like this opportunity. Is this one for you?

It won’t come as a surprise to many of you, but I have more than a few foodie friends. They sort of cover the full range of foodie-ism too –from sous chefs to chili cookoff champions & even those that love to eat but can burn water. A recent scandal broke out amongst my chili chefs about how many of the local & regional cookoffs have become “popularity contests” with prize money going to the team that could conjure enough of their friends to attend & vote. THEME: Future Framers: Envisioning 2040 – Imagine & implement creative actions, events & experiences. Explore alternative economies, architectures, or modes of transportation that might be present in 2040 & beyond. Transform the ordinary into the extra-ordinary. Think long term! Put creative thinking into practice. Give a glimpse of what the future will be or could be. Help envision a sustainable world in the future! NOTIFICATION: September 1, 2017. If you are chosen as a finalist, you must be present in Rockville, MD on September 24th to present your project.

JUDGING: F.E.A.S.T. is a public meal designed to use community-driven financial support to democratically fund projects that use art & creative thinking to impact the community. The meal will take place on September 24th. Patrons will give a donation for which they receive a locally-produced & prepared meal & a ballot. Diners listen to & review project proposals & converse with the thinkers behind each idea.

AWARDS: F.E.A.S.T. attendees cast a vote for their favorite proposal, and by the end of the event, the artist who garners the most votes is awarded a grant comprised of the event ticket money.

Because I am self-employed, my food budget fluctuates from week to week. I have learned how to make a casserole out of random refrigerator & freezer finds. I have learned to keep affordable staples like rice & potatoes, sauces like salsa verde & marinara, vegetables like cabbage & carrots, and proteins like chickpeas & canned salmon. She received her MA, Art History at Hunter College, CUNY & BFA, Studio Art & BS, Psychology from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX.

Dartt Newton had been a curator at the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture in Seattle from 2008 through 2011 while teaching at the University of Washington. Her most recent experience was as Curator of Native American Art at the Portland Art Museum.

AWARDS: 1st Place $1,000, 2nd Place $350, 3rd Place $250 & 4 Honorable Mention ribbons.
