At times I feel my life is laid bare before the world. Because I don’t have faith in the existence of privacy and an excessive desire to control my surroundings, I have beaten everyone to the punch. I have revealed almost everything to be known about me. Those few crumbs I have kept for myself are dark corners best left unexamined by most. But if Sima Schloss, today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, is right about love, despair & danger, I have nowhere to hide. I am oddly relieved. What are you not trying to hide?

CALL for ENTRIES: Artist Residency from Brush Creek Foundation for The Arts

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists 18+

MEDIA: Residencies are intended as professional development opportunities for writers, visual artists, performance musicians & composers in all fields & genres.

DEADLINE: September 1, 2017 (for the Winter/Spring Residency which runs January – May).

ENTRY FEE: $40 for up to 20 images, 20 pages or 2 scores/2 music files.

JUROR: After reviewing the work samples in each discipline (arts work, scores and manuscripts), a rotating panel of experts & professionals in the art & humanities independently rate & rank the applicants based on the development & promise of a personal vision or voice. On average, BCFA’s capacity is 8 residents each month. This includes 4 visual artists, 2 literary artists & 2 musicians. During the Winter/Spring session, 40 residents are invited.

AWARDS: Winners receive exclusive studio space, meals & individual lodging. Residents are responsible for all necessary supplies and transportation to and from Brush Creek Ranch. Residencies are 2-4 weeks in length. This depends on availability and applicant’s ranking in the jury process. Preference will go to those requesting a 4-week residency.

I have an aunt that still seals jelly with wax instead of heat sealing them with a lid & ring. She swears it is easier and says her cherry jelly never lasts more than 2 months anyway. I don’t understand how it is any easier since she has to melt the ways and spoon it over the top of the each jar of jelly. But, I love her cherry jelly, so I just keep my mouth shut about the wax. My three favorite restaurants are all in North Carolina featuring American, Spanish & Italian cuisines. They are all within a few blocks walk of each other. Is it the education system that produces the culinary prowess? Is it the city that attracts it the creative? Is it the small farm specialization that inspires clever savory vision? Inspiration is a stranger to the one not its own. For some it’s divine. For some it’s academic. For some it’s nagging & persistent. For me, it is fleeting, absent sometimes, for months. Then, inspiration comes bounding back in multiples faster than I can create. But today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Soteris Sam Roussi, has limitless problems to resolve. Someone once told me to use my anxiety as fuel; that isn’t unlike inspiration as a problem to be solved. I like it.

My grandmother lived with Alzheimer’s; her mother lived with Alzheimer’s. Every lost memory scares the wits out of me. Logically, I know that wasting my lucid years worrying about a feared eventuality of non-lucidity is just the most stupid waste of a lifetime, but some days it gets the better of me. The work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Kristen Brown, brought me to tears. It is that blurred perception of reality, that soft focus of memories just out of reach that she captures so well. Thanks for the perspective.

I eat lots of pizza, an odd side result of my job as a performing musician. Common menu offerings include lettuce-topped Mexican, Greek, thick-crust Sicilian, Californian, the New York slice, the ubiquitous pineapple Hawaiian, and of course, deep-dish Chicago style. There are many others, but these are the standards. I love how, outside the area for which they are named, they consistently have similar the toppings that aren’t always grounded in anything more than habit. Did you know California-style always has sun-dried tomatoes? Do you know why? Me either. Food stereotypes are funny & often well-intentioned, but odd & often very abstract. If you want to learn to cook well, I recommend starting with knives. Every dish is made more difficult with a dull knife. I had a brief affair with being a chef that put me in cooking school for a year. The first thing I had to buy was a full set of very expensive knives. (My mother had mine monogrammed. No kidding. SO embarrassing.) Fear not, you can start with just a couple of not-so-expensive knives. Everyone starts somewhere. This next Call is looking to help artists just making their start. Need funding?
