THEME: STILL LIFE “can be a very personal view of an artist’s daily life. . . . The magic of still life imagery is that they [sic] can show us a new way of looking at the ordinary objects around us. Once they are placed into a specific arrangement and then captured in paint, ink, pastel, photography or any other medium – the objects take on a whole new meaning. They are imbued with a life beyond the ordinary. Their existence becomes recorded in time. The objects chosen for a still life painting often have a special meaning, either on a personal, cultural, societal, religious or philosophical level. It is technically a weed, but that just means it is easy to grow. If you don’t have it naturally growing in your yard, you can buy the seeds on the cheap. Try it in stir fry or salads. What’s the weirdest pantry staple at your house? It seems like a tiny thing, but my kitchen is rarely without thai chili paste; it has become my go-to source of heat. Typically it is a combo of red chili pepper, garlic, lemongrass, galangal (ginger), salt, shallot, spices & Kaffer lime. It is a balanced flavor for me, regardless of the origin of the dish, and it is easier than roasting a pepper from scratch every time I want to add a little heat. I add it to dishes time and time again. I was out having Thai food for lunch with a friend lately. I ordered massaman curry with shrimp; she ordered green curry with tofu. I will never understand. I said, “Tofu?”, and she replied, “of course, it is my favorite”. Seriously? I am certain there are a lot of people who appreciate tofu as a vegetarian-friendly protein that will take on the flavors of other foods. But she looked me in the face and said, “it is my favorite”. NO. It isn’t really anyone’s favorite, is it? I was looking at the face of deprivation, right? Someone explain tofu to me. Again. Please. If you want to learn to cook well, I recommend starting with knives. Every dish is made more difficult with a dull knife. I had a brief affair with being a chef that put me in cooking school for a year. The first thing I had to buy was a full set of very expensive knives. (My mother had mine monogrammed. No kidding. Every meal needs a start point, a launch pad of sorts. That start is often inspired by a random item that catches my eye in the pantry. Black-eyed peas become the start for hoppin’-john-inspired tamales. Corn sometimes inspires chowder while blueberries end up in pancakes. MEDIA: Open to photography. Work derived from all photographic processes are accepted, as well as mixed media work that is photo-based (only still images are accepted, no multimedia components).

ENTRY FEES: $45 members/ $55 non-members (for 15-20 images for Project Launch or 6-10 images for Project Development)

JURORS: For Project Launch: Mazie M. Harris is an Assistant Curator in the J. Paul Getty Museum; Christy Havranek is the Photo Director at the Huffington Post; and Dewi Lewis established his publishing house in 1994.

For Project Development: Dewi Lewis established his publishing house in 1994. Internationally known, its authors have included photographers such as Martin Parr, Simon Norfolk, Pentti Sammallahti, Paolo Pellegrin, Sergio Larrain, and Anders Petersen as well as many younger emerging photographers.
