I am consistently amused by product names.  It comes from all the years of marketing.  When I saw the first commercial for belVita, I thought, “Really? Those sound awful.”  But, of course, I am now addicted to the Golden Oat variety.  However, I think I have to draw the line at urine-monikered soft drinks.  Funny? Yes.  Appetizing? No.  This next Call’s humor makes it a yummy opportunity.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center (Solomons, MD) for Humor Me.  This show has a low entry fee and a great theme.  Smile…

I’ve never been a coffee drinker Well, I used to submit to occasional peer pressure in social situations.  Wait, that didn’t sound like I was talking about coffee did it?  I probably have not had coffee, or any of its infinite variations, in over 10 years.  Nope, I am really not kidding.  I used to have my morning caffeine via a diet soft drink, but now I often drink the caffeine-free variety…if at all.  I have friends that cannot comprehend how I function without coffee or caffeine.  I dunno.  This next Call celebrates the morning coffee ritual.  Be careful, contents may be hot…

I am a hypocritical health food junkie.  I am the arrogant jerk that gives you sideways looks in the grocery line as you pile bacon, potato chips and pop tarts on the conveyor belt.  Afterall, you will be in the parking lot as I am hiding my Moon Pies under my bag of kale.  Sorry; it is hypocritical, I know.  I just want to live forever.  I want if for you too.  The majority of my groceries are whole foods, healthy or leafy and green.  But I never leave without a sugary indulgence.  This next Call needs you alive too.  Stay healthy…

No Dead Artists turns that notion on its head and gives emerging artists their first break in the art world. In the 90’s, the exhibition was open only to New Orleans artists and subsequently grew to include artists of Louisiana. In 2010, the exhibition expanded to become a national juried exhibition open to artists from the entire United States.

Each year, hundreds of artists submit thousands of works with the hope of being in the select few to exhibit at Jonathan Ferrara Gallery. The exhibition is reviewed annually by D. Eric Bookhardt (Artpapers and Gambit Weekly). The opening reception marks the beginning of the arts season in New Orleans and is attended by thousands of art enthusiasts.

Learn more from the Jonathan Ferrara Gallery! The exhibition was created in 1995 to give a voice to emerging artists. We don’t have leftovers at our house.  Any additional food that isn’t scarfed up by my ravenous 13-year-old or my string-bean skinny husband ends up being eaten as a lunch within a couple of days or as an additional ingredient in dinner that week.  I’m not sure why people object to leftovers so much.  Maybe it is a marketing problem.  We should take a nod from the British and start giving dishes made from leftovers great names like Bubble and Squeak.  This next Call is your chance to have a showing in London.  Take a look…

Louis Singh says, “St Ives in the 1970s was a somewhat lazier place than today. Late morning deals were customarily made with cigarette in one hand and glass of sherry in the other. Back then my father had the Wills Lane gallery which ensured my mind was constantly flooded with images of the St Ives School as soon as my eyes had opened.

“When I was ten my parents opened the Beaux Arts gallery in Bath which continued to nurture these Cornish roots. These days with a sister gallery in London, minus the sherry, not much has changed. I busy myself by keeping the gallery from growing old by steering some youth and raw contemporary talent, towards its doors.”

I like simple foods.  As I get older, I cook and eat fewer and fewer complicated recipes and foods.  I have come to appreciate the individual flavors of foods.  Dinner at my house is frequently a small cut of beef, chicken or fish with two oven roasted veggies on the side.  Simple.  Fewer and fewer sauces.  But, then again, I prefer simplicity in a lot of ways.  I rarely even wear prints unless they are simple geometrics.  This next call makes a geometric impact for a great end look and mission.  Please give this opportunity some serious thought…

I’ve been busy with a new adventure, and it has required a bit of traveling.  This past week, I have spent a few days at my mother’s house.  When my husband and child accompany me, mother goes grocery shopping, but since it was just me, we ate out.  When I called her today to let her know that she’d be seeing a lot of me over the next few weeks.  Her only response was, “Well, I guess I’ll have to go grocery shopping.”  Family, gotta love ’em.  This next Call is all about your family. My son loves blueberries, and buying blueberries is a happy indulgence for me to supply for him.  I have been known to buy lots of blueberry-flavored foodstuffs, but I’m also an avid label reader.  I believe people have the right to know the actual identity of what we are eating.  And folks, blueberries are a hot mess in almost any form outside the actual blueberry.  Check out foodidentitytheft.com if you’re interested.  In the meantime, this next show is all about identity.  Check it out…

Art/Identity

Art is an extension of the self, a combination of flesh and soul that is enriched by a variety of experiences, loves, histories, and hopes. Within the criss-crossing of lines, the pooling of paint, the spectacle of performance, the mechanical memory of the photograph, and the interactivity of video, one can catch a momentary glimpse of essential characteristics of personhood. They invite you to submit work of all media that examines identity in all its forms—the personal, the social, the revolutionary, the imaginary.

JUROR: A resident of Somerville, MA, Geoff Hargadon is a multimedia artist who has shown across the country. His current project, Cash for Your Warhol, has caused a stir all over the world by blurring the lines of fact and fiction, self and society, in an uncertain economic climate.

Susan Sills was born and raised in Chicago and moved to the Boston area in 1973.  After receiving a Masters in Architecture from Harvard, Sills began her career as an architect and designer. In the early 1990’s she returned to painting and combined her innovative spirit with her training and experience.  This led to an endlessly evocative body of multimedia work.  Her artistic vision exists “somewhere between the safe, structured environment of the world around us and the chaos of the textures within us all”.
