GOURMET

I had another Jetsons dream.  This one involved me in my futuristic kitchen that was equipped with completely mobile gadgetry.  I could sit or stand in one place and everything would come to me as I needed it just by thinking it.  Is it telling that I even dream about my own laziness?  Maybe instead of my laziness, it was just a premonition of a design for this next Call.  So cool…

Check out this Call for Entries from Dreams by Machine (Ventura, CA) for Opulent Mobility.  I rarely get to describe a Call as unique and even more rarely get to publish that there is no entry fee; but, this Call is both.  Don’t miss this winning combination…

So I’m a little shy about my food knowledge.  My friends, readers and even my family ask food questions all the time with the assumption that I will know the answers because I write about food everyday.  And, if you need to know how to boil the perfect egg, I’m your woman.  But, I can’t tell you the flavor profile of every fruit, veggie and meat on the planet because I haven’t tried them ALL.  I’m working on it though. In the meantime, when asked a question to which I don’t have an answer.  I just shyly beg off the subject.  Don’t be shy about this next opportunity…

Check out this Call for Entries from Shy Rabbit (Pagosa Springs, CO) for The Art of It All.  Like the name of the show implies, they are open to all media–even some fine craft like jewelry, basketry and glass work. Take a look…

PLEASE

I’ve had a few jobs and a few careers.  One that I loved more than most was as a Downtown Development Director.  I believed in the tiny town; I believe in urban renewal in rural locations (pop. 3500).  Alas, my time there was shortened to a mere 3 years.  I’ve never admitted this before, but part of my impatience with the development process was my inability to attract new, exciting food opportunities.  Really.  This next Call is a fantastic opportunity to be a part of making ART the answer.  Please investigate this FANTASTIC opportunity…

Check out this Call for Entries from Gallery Aferro (Newark, NJ) and RBH Group for Activate: Market Street.  This is a very inexpensive ($5 US) opportunity to truly get public art exposure.  So cool…

MO VEGGIES

I try not to spend all of these posts talking about my new gluten-free lifestyle.  Boring, I know.  But it has been enlightening.  Most of all, I have learned the key to GF menu planning.  Instead of figuring out how to substitute every wheat product you can no longer eat, just eat more of the naturally GF foods.  If you are what you eat, I am all things green.  This next Call wants your unique perspective on botanicals.  Great show, great gallery; don’t miss it…

The natural world has fascinated photographers since the invention of the medium. Botanicals are props in portraiture, examined in landscapes, and rendered as patterns in décor and apparel.

Preserving the ephemeral quality of plant-life as a still image allows viewers to contemplate the beauty and complexity of natural forms, but it also allows artists to re-purpose nature for our own expressive ends. Whether in bloom or decay, edible or admirable, mammoth or miniscule, all interpretations of flora are welcome for The Kiernan Gallery’s exhibition, Botanicals.

I’ve been enjoying a Summer of barbeque–tomato-based, mostly, with a dry rub here and there.  But, I kind of miss the mustard-based BBQ of South Carolina.  And on the even more rare occasion, my thoughts turn to vinegar-based BBQ of North Carolina.  It is a lighter, tangy taste than the heavy, pass-the-antacid variety common to most of the South.  If you go to the opening for this next Call in NC, be sure to try it.  Take a look…

Ah, the mysterious world of the insect.  Some are cute and cuddly, like the furry caterpillar.  Some are fierce and scary, wearing their skeletons on the outside to frighten us.  Some are artistic and majestic like the beautiful butterfly. And some are just downright romantic, like the firefly on a warm summer evening.

Nothing stretches the photographic imagination like a visit to a strange new world, but on this trip you needn’t go far to find a photo worthy subject; the wonderful world of bugs intersects and parallels our own.  Like humans, bugs are everywhere!  So this month, forget the cobwebs of your mind, grab your camera and your knee pads and worm your way into the nooks and crannies of the fantastic world of the creepers and the crawly!  Be here now and in tune with the buzz…. this month 1650 celebrates life — a bug’s life!

Street photographers are guerrilla documentarians. They capture the world as they see it, using small and forgotten moments to present a larger narrative. Themes of class, age, occupation, or background are brought to life by small stories that evoke our shared humanity.

The keen eyes of street photographers see what others take for granted, and depict the richness and variety of our public lives. For Eye on the Street, The Kiernan Gallery seeks street photography in all its forms.
