The genre of landscape photography is as varied as the earth itself. Untouched wilderness offers as much rich photographic material as manicured parks and farms. From mountains to coastlines, desert to tundra, our relationship with the land is complex and personal. For Mainland, The Kiernan Gallery seeks photographs that examine the wide variety in climate, topography, and development on our planet.

JUROR: Stella Kramer is a Pulitzer Prize-winning photo editor and creative strategist who works one-on-one with photographers to help them strengthen their creative eye, put together the strongest portfolios and websites that reflect their work, and set a course to reach their professional goals.

Her work involves in-depth critiques and positive encouragement, while working with photographers to tell their story, look at their work in a new way, and shape their portfolio and website to attract interest from potential clients.

Her blog, Stellazine, is about all things photography and features both commentary and interviews with photographers of all genres who discuss the creative process.

AWARDS: All images will be reproduced in an exhibition catalogue available for purchase. A Juror’s Choice and Director’s Choice will also be announced and both winners will receive a free copy of the catalogue.

SALES: Kiernan Gallery no longer takes commission on sold works. But, they DO still have incentive to sell your work. The Kiernan Gallery was founded by an emerging artist, and recognizes the importance of selling work; they believe that if artists are paying a submission fee, the gallery should not also take a portion of the sale. This exhibit celebrates works of art that bring to life fantastical myths, legends, fables, folktales, fairy tales, and the like. Around the world, from prehistoric times to the present, artists have been part of the story-telling process, giving shape and form to fantastical stories of supernatural beings, great heroes and heroines, cautionary tales, magical creatures, and more. In ancient times, artists commonly rendered images of these stories on walls, pottery, statuary, tapestries, and paintings. In more recent times, books, graphic novels, movies, apps, and games have expanded the way we experience these stories. No matter the time period, the artist becomes the story-teller and shares their spectacular vision through their art.

ELIGIBILITY: The exhibition is open to artists age 18 and older working in the U.S.

MEDIA: All media welcome; small to large-scale installations; new media encouraged; indoor only.

ENTRY FEE: Artists must submit a $25 entry fee (or $20 for Annmarie members) for up to four entries. Entry fee must be paid by check, money order, or credit card.

AWARDS: Annmarie will present cash awards to outstanding work. Judging will be done on installed works, not application images. If possible, judging will occur prior to the exhibit opening and awards will be presented at the opening reception.

SALES: Works selected for exhibition cannot be removed before the end of the exhibition. Should a sale resulting from the exhibition occur, Annmarie will retain a 40% commission of the listed sale price.

Nat’l Juried Exhibition 2014

The Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville announces a call for entries for its National Juried Exhibition of 2014. The Arts & Culture Alliance’s National Juried Exhibition was developed to provide a forum for artists to compete on a national scale and display their work. Approximately 40-50 fine art works encompassing all styles and genres from both emerging and established artists will be selected by the juror, Paul Collins, for exhibition in the main gallery.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists 18 years and older living in the US.

MEDIA: Entries must be original works completed within the last two years in the following categories: Painting (oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, digital, and mixed media), Graphic Arts (pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, conte, colored pencil, and printmaking), 3D (sculpture, ceramic, and fibers), and Photography.

DEADLINE: December 8, 2013

NOTIFICATION: Mailed January 6, 2014

ENTRY FEE: $40 for up to three works. Up to 3 additional entries may be submitted for $7/ea. Diptychs and triptychs are considered one work. Works are juried by digital images only. Each 2D work may be represented by one digital image, and each 3D work may be represented by up to three separate digital images: two full views and one detail view.

JUROR: Paul Collins is a multidisciplinary artist and curator from Nashville, TN. Paul makes drawings, paintings and sculpture that combine humor, tactility and observation to examine the world around us. Paul has an MFA from Yale and has been a resident at Skowhegan, Anderson Ranch Arts Center, and the Vermont Studio Center.

Paul is an enthusiastic collaborator and has curated shows or organized artist projects for a wide range of artists. Paul lives in Nashville, TN & works as Gallery Director and Asst Professor of Art at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville.

AWARDS: At least $1,000 in cash awards as designated by the juror

But, the idea that someone can learn to bake something that requires measuring and weighing from watching a food show is a little crazy. Who can write that down and still pay attention. Lydia Grey is a video/performance artist and curator teaching Video at RVCC. Her work has been shown at CCA Santa Fe, Mass Art Film Society, City Without Walls, Galex, Soho 20, The Knitting Factory, and more.

John Harford is a fine arts photographer and musician living in Bucks County, PA. Currently he teaches media and design courses at Raritan Valley Community College and coordinates the Graphic Design and Video programs.

Kelly Oliver is an adjunct video instructor and multimedia specialist at RVCC. Her video work has been shown both nationally and internationally at venues such as The New York Underground Film Festival, RISD Museum of Art, etc.

Ann Tsubota is a ceramic artist whose work includes limited edition functional work to sculptural ceramics. She is a Full Professor of Art at RVCC where she has been head of the ceramics program since 1976. She is currently chairperson of the Visual and Performing Arts Department.

French was also recognized as a 2010 Distinguished Alumna by Boston University, and named one of Ten to Watch in 2011 by the Worcester Business Journal. Under her direction, the Danforth Museum of Art has been named an Outstanding Cultural Organization by the Massachusetts Arts Education Collaborative.

Faces

An enduring fascination with the photographic portrait.

Each portrait reveals something of the sitter, the photographer and also of us as viewers. No one image can muster a whole and complete being, no matter how much we believe this could be so. This is the part of the photograph we create in our imagination, we fill in each crack and hole with a sort of personalized reasoning. And all these unknowns in the midst of true transparency.

Eye contact is made or retracted, body language boastful, reticent or indecipherable. Facial expressions can be hard at work or numbly slack. While subjects have a power over these photographic outcomes, it is the choice of the photographer to coax or mute said expressions for their artistic offering.

Submit work depicting people, selves, faces. People that baffle us with their complexities, personalities or simplistic nature. Make us question how this person existed at this particular place and time.

ELIGIBILITY: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, you must have a legal guardian make the submission for you.

The former Director of Photo-Eye Gallery, Santa Fe and Creative Director for The Gere Foundation, she has received awards and recognition for her exhibition design and publishing projects, including the retrospective exhibition and book: Avedon: 1949–1979 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Dallas Museum of Fine Arts; and Richard Avedon: In the American West for the Amon Carter Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and The Art Institute of Chicago, among many others. Elizabeth is a regular contributor to the Life.com award-winning Le Journal de la Photographie, profiling notable leaders in the world of Photography.

AWARDS: All selected entries are exhibited in the Darkroom Gallery and included in a full color exhibit catalog. Juror’s Choice receives a 30×48″ vinyl exhibit banner featuring their image. People’s Choice gains free entry into a future exhibit.
