More and more people are farming. There may be fewer commercial farms, but I find that more and more people are taking the time to grow something. Not everything; just something. This image (left) is from the Facebook feed of a friend of mine in the suburbs of Charleston, WV who is sprouting garlic for container gardening on his back patio. He planted tomato seedlings in between the sprouted cloves. It isn’t a huge endeavor, but he’ll have the best salsa of anyone in his neighborhood this summer. LOVE. So I picked a peck of peppers today. Not really. But I did buy a bushel of apples out of cold storage from my local orchard. I just couldn’t wait any longer for a sensory overload. I usually wait for the first bite of sauteed ramps, but that wasn’t enough this year. So, I am home with a bushel of Mountain York’s. This week will be filled with the making of apple sauce, apple chips, apple butter, and fresh apples in everything from chicken salad to peanut butter sandwiches and pancakes. An orchard grown apple (even out of cold storage) is overwhelming abundant in flavor. I can’t wait. You don’t have to wait either; this Call is looking for YOUR sensory overload. Love this theme…

Food legends abound. Every time I think I have heard them all, another creeps us. Did you know s’mores are meant to curb sexual desire? Well, kind of. Sylvester Graham, the inventor of the graham cracker, was a minister that created an entire lifestyle including the consumption of this self-proclaimed “bland” graham crackers as a way to control wild sexual urges. Folktales and legends blur fact and fiction; seeded in the truth, they grow into stories both fantastical and far-fetched. Whether written, spoken, or communicated visually, folktales represent cultures throughout the world. FOLKTALES & LEGENDS will explore the capacity of visual art to convey such epic narratives.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

Kella lives in Cleveland, OH and she is currently a part-time Assistant Professor at Kent State University’s School of Art.

Historically, a still life composition is an array of commonplace objects, inert and set in space. These objects often include natural components such as plants, fruits, vegetables, nuts, flowers accompanied by man made objects like dishes, boxes, mirrors and vases within an interior setting at eye level like a table top. Intelligent Objects is an open call for those artworks that act as independent agents & explore the cross-section of analog & digital media. In this age, toasters communicate over the internet & robots vacuum our floors, this exhibition explores those artistic objects which appear to be responsive to our existence, or at least demand an empathy if not an emotion, that we give to sentient beings. The art in this exhibition need not be kinetic or sculptural, it is open to any combination of traditional & new media. JUROR: George Fifield is a media arts curator, writer, teacher and artist. He is the founder and director of Boston Cyberarts Inc., a nonprofit arts organization that produced the Boston Cyberarts Festival as well as film and video presentations and symposia at numerous organizations throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island. For thirteen years, Fifield was also Curator of New Media at the DeCordova. He is an independent curator of New Media with numerous projects in the United States and abroad. Fifield has taught at a number of institutions on New Media subjects. He is adjunct professor at the Digital + Media program at Rhode Island School of Design.

AWARDS: Two artists will be awarded a joint exhibition at CAW in 2016. All selected entries will be included in an online gallery on the CAW website.
