How do you fuel your early afternoons? I know some of you find it freaky that I’ve not consumed coffee in 20+ years, but I’ve just never acquired the taste. Whether you choose sugar-full or sugar-substituted, soft drinks are a horrible alternative. So, I am taking suggestions. Smoothies are fantastic, and I can make pretty healthy choices that offer a little energy boost. However, to maintain any sort of variety, I’d need a much larger amount storage space. Has anyone tried the the soup & smoothie subscription service? (not a paid post or affiliate link). It might be an interesting way to get variety. Sometimes you just need a little help.

This next Call is MORE than just a little help. Many of you will live outside the qualifiers (living either within 150 miles of D.C. This is an open call for proposals for solo exhibitions for Hillyer’s 2020/2021 season.

ELIGIBILITY: Hillyer focuses on under represented artists. We accept proposals from regional artists that live within 150 miles of Washington, DC and have not had a solo exhibition in the last three years in a professional gallery or art space OR work from international (non-American) artists that are both living & working internationally.

MEDIA: Open to all media

DEADLINE: September 10, 2019 (by 4pm)

ENTRY FEE: $30

AWARD: A month long exhibition in one Hillyer’s three gallery rooms, Artist honorarium, Inclusion in annual RISE exhibition, previewing selected artists for 2020/21 season; Ongoing support from Hillyer staff, including a studio visit and exhibition consultation with Hillyer’s Director, assistance with exhibition installation and de-installation, review of exhibition materials (artist statement, bio, labels, etc), and marketing and promotion of exhibition. Accepted artists also benefit from our Artist Advisory Program, where our highly qualified Artist Advisory Committee works individually with each artist to help them prepare their exhibitions and establish themselves in the DC-arts community. CALL for ENTRIES: Chroma

I’ve always had a hankering for a rainbow assortment of foods, but my personal aesthetic has skewed black and white over the years. I was the kid that wore black, my work concentrated on black and white images for nearly 20 years. About 2 1/2 years ago, my work shifted, and color began to seep into what I had to say. Once the dam sprung a leak, the flood waters came. I did a complete media shift with more color than I can describe, occasionally venturing into neon territory. Then I spent a month in Scotland. I took all black clothing with a few colorful scarves and accessories just to simplify packing…

But, Scotland. It was awash with the most spectacular light, even when it was overcast. My lasting impression is of vivid blues and greens. My clothing became an issue. I felt like I was wearing a black hole. When my plane touched down in the U.S. again, one of my first stops was to buy a colorful shirt because I just couldn’t take the black anymore. This next Call is all about color, and I have the perfect work to submit. How about you?

CALL for ENTRIES: The Bicycle 2019

I have a friend that is a competitive cyclist and one that owns a coffee cart that is powered by custom-built tricycles, meanwhile I can’t ride a bike or a trike, or at least I don’t think so. It has been a long time since I tried. My friend that rides long distances carries a small pack with water and snacks. I picked up the protein bars she recommended, assuming they would be of questionable taste and that the lack of TASTE would prevent me from eating them like candy bars. FAIL. They taste like coconut cookies — delicious. Ahhh. I’m trying to forgive her, ha.

Today’s call is all about the bicycle. I exhibited in this show last year, and the venue is beautiful. My interpretation of bicycle was NOT literal, so I was pleased to receive an acceptance letter. My work did not sell, but the returned work was well-packed and received in an appropriate amount of time. The entry fee is low; there are cash awards, and the commission is standard. I may enter again this year. How about you?

On paper, I am NOT a finicky eater, but there is a list of things I don’t eat by choice. I’ve always disliked Ranch dressing until this 40 Aprons recipe changed my mind (not a sponsored post). The remainder of the list includes collard greens, anything eaten alive, American “cheese”, licorice & few other random odds & ends that are not normal options anyway. Sometimes you don’t know until confronted with an unedible. I had to eat American cheese last week, and it is still on my mind, obviously, ha. What are your outside food limits?

CALL for ENTRIES: Real People 2019

So, I’m selling my electric pressure cooker. I got one as a gift a couple of years ago, hesitantly, and thought I would love it. Not so much. I tried joining an online community. Didn’t help. It became a very heavy glorified rice cooker, and today it goes away. (shoutout to Facebook Marketplace) This is all a part of the new, lighter, more portable, healthier me. I don’t mean physically, although the Instant Pot IS ridiculously heavy; I mean that I am trying to lighten my load and remember to repurpose or pass along things I no longer need.

I’ve had my eye on the venue for this next Call for a while. As much as I appreciate the modern box gallery, I have a special love for spaces repurposed as galleries. In this case, the gallery is located in what used to be an old courthouse. The variance in the spaces allows curators and jurors to cater the work to the environment. I like it. This Call comes from a publicly-funded arts council in a publicly funded space. I also like that. Take a look and let me know if you enter & how your experience is. I reject the notion that extravagant dishes require exotic foods. I find that the simplest foods, treated extravagantly, remain my favorites. Have you ever had a vanilla-poached peach? Top it with freshly whipped cream and a drizzle of raw honey, and it makes for the the most opulent dessert (or breakfast) you could ever want. I’ve spent many a year unimpressed by this simple stone fruit to only to realize it was my own lack of imagination at fault.

This next Call addresses mobility devices and their common ground the the common peach — a need for re-imagining. Each year when this Call is announced, I revel in the notion of opulent mobility. You need look no further than the work of curator A. Laura Brody as inspiration. At its core, this show suggests that not only are we enough, but that we should celebrate our enough-ness. That we deserve to move through our lives, through this world with a personal sense of opulence, with purposeful, extravagant creativity. Sit with the notion of this Call and see where it takes you.

CALL for ENTRIES: Meltdown

It is no secret that I’m a little, well, let’s call it cheese “focused”. But we all have our priorities. After being seperated by an ocean for 4 weeks, my husband and I stopped by a local dairy farm less than 24 hours after reunited… to buy cheese. Priorities. Cheese glorious cheese. A few days later, I made summer squash au gratin also known as “squash makes all the melted cheese a legitimate choice”, au gratin for short. Melted cheese means I’m home, ha. Think of it as my oven’s welcome mat. It is the best kind of meltdown.

I have been known to indulge in an epic meltdown of a personal nature on occasion. The last U.S. presidential election put me in an ugly place for weeks. Every insuing attack on civil rights, environmental regulations, access to health insurance & the ability to govern the workings of my own body have warranted their own meltdowns. My work has changed. My life has changed. I worry about becoming numb to the suffering of others, to the loss of agency, to the restrictions on the ability to speak freely. Where is this planet’s population headed? While I was in Scotland recently, I was regularly engaged by locals about American politics. People want to understand what is going on in the United States. I couldn’t explain. I can’t explain. So, I just keep working. Right now, THAT is what I can do.

CALL for ENTRIES: Content Matters

SPRING greens

It is time for my seasonal obsession with ginger. I love ginger all of the time; however, about 4 to 6 weeks at the beginning of Spring, I am obsessed. I find ways to work it into every salad, entree & dessert. My family just smiles & nods, knowing that the ship will right itself soon. I think it happens because the weather has just warmed up enought to inspire thoughts of light and fresh fare, but our local harvest hasn’t quite made it to summertime bounty yet. High-quality ginger is available year ’round, and content matters.

This next Call has a deadline just around the corner (sorry for that), and it meets my resume criteria for this year (museums, publicly-funded galleries, collections or libraries). But the theme of “Content Matters” is what really pushed me to want to enter — achingly relevant. I am finishing a piece now that I think would be perfect, but, you know… jurors. We’ll see. CALL for ENTRIES: Loss, Redemption & Grace

I’ll take the PIE to go

There are a lot of customs surrounding death & food. Most people are familiar with people trying to feed the living by bringing the ubiquitous casserole to the living, but I’ve recently learned that many cultures feed the dead by leaving food on graves, from leaving a pie on the gravestone at Easter to pouring wine on the burial site. I don’t have a real understanding of the symbolism (if you do, LMK) behind the traditions, but I love the love it takes to want to feed someone pie and wine, even after death. THAT is devotion.

My work has centered around human bones for a while now. Bones indicate a pattern for me, both for the living and the lost. I prowl cemeteries with a sense of joy, not mourning. Gravestones are monuments for the living of the best in those no longer able to create new memories. They are, without doubt, often erected out of obligation, but even in obligation, they document a lifespan as an accomplishment, no matter how brief. If they include additional details, they are rare ugly, even if the truth is ugly. This next Call speaks to me because if offers the opportunity to react to loss from a place of truth, not obligation or memorialization. I am also excited about an open opportunity in Atlanta, a rarity.

And, we’ve returned. I have been working as an artist in residence in Scotland for the past month, so I made the decision to shut us down for a few weeks. I’ve been back for three days –stuffing my face with all those foods one associates with home. Yours may be pasta or cheese, and mine is ALL foods, ha, but what I really missed were salads and vegetables and marinades, all the foods that I was too lazy or too time-pressed to enjoy making for myself. So many red peppers.

We need to talk about residency experiences, but let’s say hello with an exhibit to start. I have been crafting my resume to serve my current goals, and that includes public and non-profit art galleries, organizations & museums. Waterloo is one of my favorite non-profits, dedicating its resources to bringing quality programming to Cleveland, Ohio. This particular exhibit has a low entry fee and offers a small honorarium to all accepted artists ($5 less than the entry fee) while still offering thousands of dollars in awards. And to top it all off, the show’s run is during an arts festival, offering increased foot-traffic & pubicity. There are a lot of pros. Lets celebrate the good ones…
