CALL for ENTRIES: 2017 JTNP Juried

Learn more about the Joshua Tree National Park Art Expo from the Joshua Tree National Park Council for the Arts!YUCA, not yucca

Tapioca is an other-worldly food.  I love the pearls in pudding and starch as a thickener, but I still find it odd.  Many people think it is a grain, like wheat, but it is processed as a product of the cassava plant.  You may know it as yuca, which can be found from Brazil to Nigeria, but don’t confuse it for yucca, the similar-sounding decorative plant that is related to the Joshua Tree.  And whatever you do, don’t eat a Joshua Tree, ha. The Park behind the next Call would probably like for me to reiterate that point –don’t eat Joshua Tree; but DO make art inspired by them.  Take a look…

BERRY good

Painting with food is fun.  About 15 years ago, I was a gallerist faced with the challenge of creating a curriculum for day camp that would teach children concepts & techniques employed in abstract painting.  Again & again we found that painting with berries was the biggest success.  It bypassed brush skills which are a challenge for kids under 6, and it relieved parents’ worries about the toxicity of paint.  And of course, teaching other people’s children to play with their food is always fun, ha.  This Call is all about painting, but using berries isn’t required.  Take a look…

a little KITCHEN

So, the move is complete.  My husband & I have downsized our home by half as the next step in our being completely mobile.  I am currently referring to my home as “box city” for reasons that I imagine are obvious.  Part of the move included purging my life of all the “stuff” weighing me down, including kitchen gadgets and single-use appliances.  The lack of stuff has necessarily affected my cooking as well, encouraging simplicity, whole foods & clean eating.  It is a new place, a new space & an opportunity for a fresh perspective.  This next Call, although un-themed, reinforces the idea of a unique sense of place.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: The Art of Timelessness

Learn more about The Art of Timelessness Call from LA Photo Curator! the CLASSICS

I drove from Tennessee through Arkansas to Texas in two days this week, then immediately got on a plane from Dallas to Atlanta and then on to Charlotte.  Yes, I AM road weary.  All that traveling means a lot of restaurant and convenience foods.  I was also traveling with a teenager in tow, so the food choices weren’t always the healthiest.  By day three I was in full-on vegetable withdrawal when I tripped across a new restaurant, modern & sleek, somewhere in Arkansas whose specialty was salads.  Not deconstructed, not a self-serve buffet, not odd combinations or fusion cuisine.  Just salads –Cobb, Caesar, caprese & more.  Just the classics, timelessly delicious. This next Call is all about timelessness.  Take a look…

“As artists, one nurtures & comes to possess a visually attuned intuition. For some gaining this 2nd sight takes a lifetime of hunting and searching. Others seem to be born with this keen sense of knowing.  Most of us have experienced these timeless yet eternal essences. Like a memory lodged deep inside our psyche- these transitory moments are illusive and appear quick as lightning. . . the fleeting second of light, composition & memory.” –from Lisa Gizara via laphotocurator.com

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

NOTIFICATION: June 27, 2017

Two of the most used utensils in my kitchen are ice cream scoops, and neither gets used for ice cream.  We haven’t make full pans of brownies or cornbread or cake in years.  We use those scoops to portion everything from quiche to bread in muffin tins.  With everyone on the go, we find single-serving sized foods make for fewer excuses for not taking quality food from home.  As a gallerist, I’ve found that small works often take the I-don’t-have-room objection off the table too.  This next Call wants the best of your small work.  This is a great opportunity…
