SOUPER bowls

I plead guilty to taking my eating utensils and dishes for granted.  Because of my love for the art of plating food, I’ve always owned solid white functional dishware.  My mother is a “collector” of flatware and hasn’t allowed me to pick my own, EVER.  It is bestowed upon me on occasion without request or explanation.  We all have our burdens, ha.  

Now I am married to a commercial production potter (120+ pots a day & NOT pictured here), and suddenly the world of dishware is my oyster.  Did you know you need differently sized and shaped bowls for salad, cereal & pasta? As I said, we all have our burdens, ha.  I love eating out of the bowls my husband has thrown.  Every once in a while he comes home with a “one off” just for me because he thought it looked like it was “meant for me”.  *swoon*  I’ve been trying to convince him to enter this show because I love this venue.  It isn’t restricted to a literal interpretation, so be sure to investigate this opportunity.

How do you fuel your early afternoons?  I know some of you find it freaky that I’ve not consumed coffee in 20+ years, but I’ve just never acquired the taste.  Whether you choose sugar-full or sugar-substituted, soft drinks are a horrible alternative.  So, I am taking suggestions.  Smoothies are fantastic, and I can make pretty healthy choices that offer a little energy boost.  However, to maintain any sort of variety, I’d need a much larger amount storage space.  Has anyone tried the the soup & smoothie subscription service? (not a paid post or affiliate link).  It might be an interesting way to get variety.  Sometimes you just need a little help.

This next Call is MORE than just a little help. Many of you will live outside the qualifiers (living either within 150 miles of D.C. This is an open call for proposals for solo exhibitions for Hillyer’s 2020/2021 season.

ELIGIBILITY: Hillyer focuses on under represented artists. We accept proposals from regional artists that live within 150 miles of Washington, DC and have not had a solo exhibition in the last three years in a professional gallery or art space OR work from international (non-American) artists that are both living & working internationally.

MEDIA: Open to all media 

DEADLINE:  September 10, 2019 (by 4pm)

ENTRY FEE: $30

AWARD:  A month long exhibition in one Hillyer’s three gallery rooms, Artist honorarium, Inclusion in annual RISE exhibition, previewing selected artists for 2020/21 season; Ongoing support from Hillyer staff, including a studio visit and exhibition consultation with Hillyer’s Director, assistance with exhibition installation and de-installation, review of exhibition materials (artist statement, bio, labels, etc), and marketing and promotion of exhibition.  Accepted artists also benefit from our Artist Advisory Program, where our highly qualified Artist Advisory Committee works individually with each artist to help them prepare their exhibitions and establish themselves in the DC-arts community. On paper, I am NOT a finicky eater, but there is a list of things I don’t eat by choice.  I’ve always disliked Ranch dressing until this 40 Aprons recipe changed my mind (not a sponsored post). The remainder of the list includes collard greens, anything eaten alive, American “cheese”, licorice & few other random odds & ends that are not normal options anyway. Sometimes you don’t know until confronted with an unedible.  I had to eat American cheese last week, and it is still on my mind, obviously, ha.  What are your outside food limits?

This next Call is on another of my lists, but this one is for far better reasons.  I appreciate academic shows, and they align with my list of shows that will help push me toward my career goals. Prior to her current position at PAFA, Throckmorton served as Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Ulrich Museum of Art at Wichita State University and as associate curator at the San Jose Museum of Art. She holds an MFA in Museum Studies from San Francisco State University, and a bachelor’s degree in Art History and French from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. 

AWARD:  $2,000 will be available for purchase awards. Purchased work will be added to the permanent collection of the Department of Art, housed in the Oklahoma State University Museum of Art. Awards will be selected by the juror after the accepted work has been received.

CALL for ENTRIES: Cover Art

a HUNGRY summer

I’ve had my head down working and planning and growing.  How about you?  Spring always makes me take a second look at my process, while summer makes me kick into production mode.  What are you doing to support your work?  I am contemplating meal kits and taking a day off from the studio.  I know that doesn’t make a lot of sense at first glance. But lunch is the bane of my daily schedule.  Just when I hit a creative stride, it is time for some sort of meal prep for lunch.  I live in a house with folks with dietary restrictions, and everyone eats lunch at home.  So, I’ve been exploring options.  Take out takes just as much time to pick up, and delivery is cost prohibitive.  A lot of meal kits are labor intensive despite arriving with pre-prepped foods, and many of them are the wrong quantity or, again, cost-prohibitive.  I’ve found one (Hungryroot & no, this is not sponsored) I think I am going to give a try.  The ingredients look good, the sizing is right, the cost is manageable.  I am excited about getting lunch off my plate, so to speak.

One of the other big stumbling blocks for me is juggling my boring-but-necessary household tasks with my work schedule. Finding time. I find it hard to work creatively when I am encumbered with a list of non-creative tasks to do at home.  My husband more than carries his half of the burden, but someone still has to do my half, ha.  So, I’ve been practicing taking one day off from the studio and trying to cram all of the household tasks I can into that day –laundry, appointments, meal planning, grocery shopping.  It is a work in progress.  I’ll be sure to give you an update before summer’s end.  In the meantime, I’ve had two acceptances for publication in two different magazines, and I am inspired by the positive attention it has drawn to my work and added to my social media reach.  So, I am offering a few publication calls this week.  I am running close on deadlines, so don’t delay in submitting your work.

The cover will be printed in full-color, full bleed, with the magazine’s logo in overprint and will be reproduced on the magazine’s website and electronic publications. The size of the printed cover is 6.75 inches wide by 9.75 inches tall, so the image may need to be adjusted to fit the trim size.

I reject the notion that extravagant dishes require exotic foods. I find that the simplest foods, treated extravagantly, remain my favorites.  Have you ever had a vanilla-poached peach? Top it with  freshly whipped cream and a drizzle of raw honey, and it makes for the the most opulent dessert (or breakfast) you could ever want.  I’ve spent many a year unimpressed by this simple stone fruit to only to realize it was my own lack of imagination at fault.

This next Call addresses mobility devices and their common ground the the common peach — a need for re-imagining.  Each year when this Call is announced, I revel in the notion of opulent mobility.  You need look no further than the work of curator A. Laura Brody as inspiration.  At its core, this show suggests that not only are we enough, but that we should celebrate our enough-ness.  That we deserve to move through our lives, through this world with a personal sense of opulence, with purposeful, extravagant creativity.  Sit with the notion of this Call and see where it takes you.

Every week I manage to make a handful of Insta-worthy, perfectly staged lunches & dinners, completely by accident.  More often, I conjure tasty dishes that are weirdly, mostly shades of brown due to carmelization, excessive de-glazing and a love for soy, fish, Worchestershire & all other sauces, brown & salty.  As you might imagine, the brown food pics, outside of coffee & walnuts, aren’t really winners on social media, ha.  My work is not brown or salty, but similar & not…

A few times per week I manage to pull off a perfectly Insta-worthy image of my work in progress –always at an off-kilter angle with short focus to blur unresolved issues and just the right light to allow a contrast-y filter to make me look like a rock star.  It is deceptive and born out of equal measure of insecurity and social media pressure to look like I always have everything effortlessly under control.  I have guilt, but not.  I don’t like feeding into the notion that studio life needs to be glamourous, but I also don’t like exposing my vulnerability underbelly to nameless, faceless critics.  Then enters this Call.  As you might imagine, I read A LOT of Calls, and I like options for art publication.  But THIS call is different.  This call wants to see the mess.  Finally, there is an option to show studio life, work-in-progress specifically.  I think that this is the kind of aspirational we can feel good about –always real, likely messy & unresolved.  Seeing yourself represented as an artist is important.  This Call is the brainchild of one of our previously Featured Artists, Robyn Thompson.  It is a project of her course work while working toward her Master of Arts in Social Practice, making this a great opportunity to lift up ourselves AND one of our very own.

“On The Easel (OTE), a new hybrid digital/paper magazine is seeking submissions of works in progress. We want to see the mess. We want to show the struggles.”

MEDIA: Open to all media.  Despite the name, this Call is not restricted to painting. They “want to show work during its awkward teen years in the hopes that it will inspire folks to push through to bring it to fruition.”

EDITOR:  Robyn Thompson, visual artist who is working toward her M.A. in Social Practice program at the University of the Highlands and the Islands.  This project is a part of Thompson’s course work.  Your participation would be appreciated.

AWARD:  Each page will include a full page image of your work in progress or a detail from it. We welcome submissions of either. Your name, links to your work and a paragraph about your process will also be included. The publication will be available for free online and you will be able to order print copies at cost if you wish.

When I was a child, my grandmother would occasionally bake a special dessert and exclaim, “as American as apple pie” when she would deliver it to the table. I’m not sure why, just an odd familial colloquialism I suppose.  But apple pie certainly isn’t an American original.  The Dutch have recorded recipes for apple pie dating back to 1514.  An appeltaart is a deep pie with a pastry top and bottom.  It’s filled with a apple, sugar, cinnamon & lemon juice and sometimes raisins or currants.  Now, I’m hungry.  This next Call is for a residency in The Netherlands.  It is as Dutch as apple pie. *snicker*  Take a look…

I still get email about my relationship with food.  A number of my friends & peers are vegan and are bothered by my cheese obsession.  I dare say the majority of the people I know are vegetarian; therefore, any mention of meat ends in a little hate mail from frenemies.  And I still regularly get the “why do you write about food” question even though we’ve been at it for almost 10 years now.  I am surprised EVERY time.  I forget people read what I write, ha.  This next Call wants to know about your relationship to anything you care to share.  How will you answer this Call?

You can see current examples of his photography at his personal site, below.  He has juried throughout the country for ANMPAS, Review Santa Fe, Review LA, Photo Lucida, The Center for Fine Art Photography, The Gala Awards & The Palm Springs Photo Festival. He has photographed workshops by Elizabeth Opalenik, Joyce Tenneson, and was asked by the iconic photographer Lucien Clergue to document his nude outdoor location workshop in Béssége, France, in 2009. 

AWARDS:  The curator chooses 1st place, 2nd place & 3 honorable mentions. The 1st place winner will receive a review by one or more curators including a Q&A about the photographer’s work. In addition, their image will be on the home page for a month. 2nd place & honorable mentions will have their image shown along with their bio, artist statement, C.V. and a link back to their website.
