My whole house smells like peppers & basil at the moment. A recent Saturday trip to the farmers market ended with a huge surplus of these staples, but to prevent loss, I am dehydrated both. Then I will grind, chop or crumble most of these into a smaller form for storage and use this winter. This next Call could be an outlet for new work, but it could be an excellent way to compact and move out studies or older work. I encourage you to contemplate cutting down your work. ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Works on paper that will fit in a 9×12 envelope. Artworks may be any size, but they MUST fit in a 9” x 12” envelope to be mailed, although they may be folded, 3D or multi-part. More than one work may be mailed in each envelope. Acceptable media includes photography, drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, mixed media, cast or folded paperworks, artist books or digital prints. *A few brave souls out there might consider cutting larger work down to create more abstract work.

DEADLINE: November 16, 2015

NOTIFICATION: All hung show

ENTRY FEE: $5 per piece, limit 6

SALES: All artwork will be for sale for $100 US and FWCAC retains a 25% commission. Unsold works sent with an appropriate size self-addressed STAMPED envelope (SASE) will be returned.

*Editor’s Note: If you are careful (& have fantastic work, of course), you might be able to make a few dollars with this exhibit. Six entries ($30 USD), sent USPS Priority Mail ($6 USD) = $36. Tomatoes, tomatoes everywhere. It is THAT time of the year. The Farmers Market is awash with overly ripe tomatoes at rock bottom prices. When they are less than $1 a pound, I have such a hard not taking them home. We’ve taken to having snacks of sliced tomatoes, tomato sandwiches and marinated tomatoes. ODILON was born in Paris and felt heavily influenced by classical music, ballet dancing and the Masters of painting. At the age of 16, Odilon suffered from anorexia. At 17 she began using a camera to make self portraits. It was simply a way to give her a glimpse inside herself to make sense of the pain with which she struggled to understand.

"Taking action is far better than thinking, for me. Photography saved my life."

If you have something to say, you should say it. Anonymous food & restaurant reviews are cheap shots. Have you noticed that only BAD reviews are posted by “anonymous”. If someone has something good to say, they post their names in all CAPS. I am hopeful that this next Call will redeem the notion of posting, or in this case exhibiting, anonymously. I’ve run across a huge amount of admirable testing, experimentation and success amongst food-enthusiasts, homemakers, homesteaders, preppers & gardners alike. It isn’t about how little you spend; it is about how little you throw away. That is the key to keeping our household food budget on track. We throw very little away. When celery goes limp or carrots dry out, we add them to the collection of chicken bones in the freezer to make stock. I haven’t purchased broth or stock in years. A little cream makes a whole new meal from left overs. Overly ripe fruits make fantastic preserves, coulees, granitas & trail mix. Stale bread makes great croutons. We all eat massive amounts of corn. Since my husband’s Celiac diagnosis, we are a gluten-free household, and it took a lot of work. But, now it is second nature and, really, no big deal. But corn? If I had to try to cut corn out of our diets, we would starve; it is in EVERYTHING. In 2012, the USDA claimed 88% of U.S. corn is GMO. I’m not okay with that, so we are planning an attempt to grow our own soon. Meanwhile, did you know that corn does excellent double duty as a trellis for growing peas? Plus, the peas supply much-need nitrogen to the soil for the corn. Don’t you just love nature? It is in the nature of this next Call to offer DOUBLE the prizes. Make us proud…
