I am grateful for the apples, but I am missing fresh local veggies already. My local orchard serves as my farmers market most weeks. With their cold storage program, I can get local apples for most of the year, but the veggies they offer are limited as of November. Aside from winter squash, the only thing LOCALLY fresh I’ll have until spring are potatoes, onions and maybe a hot house bell pepper or two. I drink everyday–bottles & bottles of water. As my alter ego, I perform 4 to 5 days per week, and on stage, I suck down approximately 24 ounces of water every 45 minutes to keep my voice in check. So, let’s talk about the bottles. I know that disposable bottles are not ideal due to the waste issue, but I am paranoid about being able to be certain that I am really getting disposable bottles truly clean. I have searched for a reusable bottle that has a large enough opening (for proper cleaning) but is both very compact (has to fit on a mic stand) and non-descript (so it doesn’t stick out in every picture). JUROR: Gary Braasch is an environmental photojournalist and writer who documents nature, environment, biodiversity and climate change around the world. He has been a nature photographer for more than 40 years, and is internationally known for dramatic, artistic and science-based nature photography. His images and assignment articles have been published by Time, LIFE, New York Times Magazine, Discover, Smithsonian, National Geographic, Scientific American and the United Nations among many others.

Most of his work is on conservation or natural history subjects, the coverage of which gained Gary the Ansel Adams Award from the Sierra Club in the U.S., and the Outstanding Nature Photographer citation from the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA). He was a founding Board Member of NANPA and a founding Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers.

He received the Ansel Adams Award from the Sierra Club and the Outstanding Nature Photographer citation from the North American Nature Photography Association. In 2010 he was named as one of the Forty Most Influential Nature Photographers by Outdoor Photography magazine.

Everywhere I go there are pumpkins. Big orange jack-o-lantern-style pumpkins are everywhere –shipped in from farms across the state. Funny enough, while my neighbors (along with most of the country) are obsessed with pumpkin-flavored everything, there are almost NO pumpkins meant for cooking (sugar pumpkins) to be found in grocery stores. Previously, Makrandi taught art history at the UT, Chattanooga and served as a curator at the Knoxville Museum of Art. Makrandi has a M.A. from Texas Tech & a B.A. from Mercer in GA, and participates regularly in the region as a juror, guest curator & speaker.

AWARDS: Cash awards totaling $4,000 will be presented at the exhibit’s Opening Reception –Best in Show, 2nd Place, 3rd Place, 2 Merit awards & an award from Fast Frame. All accepted artists are encouraged to attend the Awards Reception at The Emporium Center.

I have plastic envy. Hoop houses are sprouting up all over town as pre-planning for chances of upcoming frost. Last year our first snow came in October. Locally lots of folks protect their late Summer plantings from possible early frost while also giving them space to start seedlings in colder weather. Once the ground is frozen, installation becomes a much more complicated project. My house hangs on the side of a mountain. The only flat space I have for a hoop house is my gravel driveway, ha. The sight of a train trestle always conjures my cravings for hot chocolate. My entire life has been spent in residence within about a half-mile of railroad road tracks. I loved sitting on my front porch in the Fall with a cup of hot chocolate and listen to the trains pass. That all ended when I moved to Gatlinburg. MEDIA: Sculpture suitable for outdoor installation: a) must be capable of withstanding adverse weather conditions (high winds, below zero temperatures, snow storms); b) must withstand high traffic environment; c) should take into consideration the safety of the audience & d) artwork must be durable & require limited to no maintenance. Art must be installation-ready.

DEADLINE: Early: January 22, 2016. Late: January 29, 2016

NOTIFICATION: February 10, 2016

ENTRY FEE: Thru January 22, 2016, $35 for up to 3. Late entry, January 23-29, $45 for up to 3.

AWARDS: $3,000: Best of Show, $2,000: 2nd Place, $1,000: 3rd Place, $1,000: People’s Choice Award & $500: Two (2) Honorable Mention awards. In addition, all finalists whose works are installed will receive a stipend of $1,500 per sculpture—$750 upon delivery to the site and $750 upon removal*. The sculptures that are sold during the exhibition will be delivered by Dogwood Arts to the buyer at the close of the exhibition and there will not be a $750 removal stipend awarded to artists on those sold sculptures.

SALES: Artists may sell their work during the exhibition period. However, the work must remain on site for the duration of the exhibition. Every effort is made to promote sales. All sales are handled by Dogwood Arts who retains a 30% commission.
