CALL for ENTRIES: Technology & Nature

Learn more about the Technolgy & Nature exhibit from the Black Bar Gallery!electronic EATS

I spent another week eating & working on the road.  I am a grazer, always snacking on something whether I am home or on the road.  Most of my work gets done in a hotel room or in the car during night drives, but this week I spent hours in a coffee shop.  Ewwww.  The yuck didn’t come from the coffee or the fantastic lunch I had.  It came from my laptop.  Gross.  Who do I call to decontaminate my work space?  The fluorescent lighting in the coffee shop highlighted every crumb, splotch & speck.  This next Call wants your view on technology & nature (not necessarily food) Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from Black Bar Gallery (Boise, ID) for Technology & Nature. $20 entry for this art publication opportunity. This is a cool opportunity…

“Production of Belonging #1 & #2” (collaged acrylic on paper) by Dana Hargrove

“As we traverse the land, we may find our search for utopia
leads us on a journey that offers, on the surface, little more
than a façade of our ideals.” —
Dana Hargrove

After another week on the road, it is easy for me to begin to see patterns in the towns through which I drive — aspects of the constructs that seem to reflect back the personality of the town, be they real or fabricated. Imagine my delight to find the work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Dana Hargrove.  I invite you to take the time to investigate more of Dana’s work and her exploration of this concept.

“Steady Your Course” & “Refrain” (mixed-media collage) by Laura Lein-Svencner

I struggle with self-doubt like every artist, like every person.  I struggle with balance and/or learning to live with imbalance.  I want peace and tranquility, but lack the self-control to say “no” often enough to allow time for the peace.  I find myself annoyed by the gospel of “busy” but fulfilling the stereotype repeatedly.  Art is the exception.  Art prompts but stills me, makes things clearer.

The mixed-media collage work today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Laura Lein-Svencner gave me a little perspective today, helped me weigh options.  Pause for just a moment…

Making art makes me conscious of my hands again, and all
of my work requires time-intensive, redundant
movements that remind me that not everything is as
instantaneous as a click of a mouse.

Sculpture by Dimosthenis Prodromou
head sculpture by Dimosthenis Prodromou

“I use the term ready-made pallet to describe my color.” –Dimosthenis Prodromou

I’m such a fan of found-object assemblage, trash art & recycled materials.  I understand the debate over archival materials, and I embrace a movement toward outdoor ephemeral sculpture in parks and outside museums & universities.  However, I do often find my self frustrated when an artist chooses to use a recycled materia regardless of of whether it really works.  I don’t like the gimmick of it all.  But the sculptural work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Dimosthenis Prodromou finds itself at one with newsprint.  If feels like a natural progression of the paper’s lifecycle.  It appears both solid, but soft & light.   A ready-made pallet…

CALL for ENTRIES: Trees 2016

Learn more about the TREES exhibit from NYC4PA - New York Center for Photographic Art!NUTS for one & all

Last Fall the local acorn crop failed, along with most of the hard mast.  As a result, black bears suffered along with the deer, squirrels & jays; it is a primary food source in the Smokies.  The bears were so hungry last year, more than 50 of them ended up at our local rescue.  I am hopeful for this year’s crop.  Every squirrel, chipmunk & jay that has crossed my path has done so with a green acorn in its mouth, or so it seems.  Fingers crossed the trees don’t let all the little critters down this year.  This next Call is also all about the trees.  I like this one…

Check out this Call for Entries from NYC4PA for Trees 2016.  Open to ALL photographic processes, this show awards a NY group exhibit, an online exhibit & cash prizes!  Take a look…

Trees 2016
from NYC4PA

“Trees are essential to the lifeblood of the world.  Roots hold the soil so erosion is mitigated.  They are home to birds, squirrels and many other of nature’s creatures.  They bear fruit and in the fall the colors enhance our lives.  Trees can also be looming, ominous, and, in cases of stormy weather, dangerous.  They are integral to forests and jungles.  They stand alone on a hillside creating lovely shadows; shade a child on a hot day; are sturdy posts to tie up the pet dog, hold a hammock off the ground. Remember the lost art of the backyard laundry line.  Send us your images of trees as you experience them – forests, single trees, branches, roots.”  –NYC4PA.com

“I explore the relationship of the subjects as an almost religious icon, as a portrait. Everything I paint has an energy that I strive to bring to the surface.” –Jennie Traill Schaeffer

It seems that today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Jennie Traill Schaeffer finds an inner purpose or being, a light if you will, in all objects.  It doesn’t upset me at all that she chose cupcakes this time.  Enjoy this sweet treat…

CALL for ENTRIES: We Love People

Learn more about the We Love People exhibit from Atelier Alen!so so many EGGS

We eat dozens & dozens of eggs each month. It would be easy to assume that when we’re out, we’d avoid them.  That’s not really the case.  I have them fried, over-medium, after late night outings, take them cold & hard-boiled to picnics or on early mornings.  And on my recent stop at Sugar Mama’s, a little bakery/bar combo, in Knoxville, I was treated to “German Eggs”.  Think of it as a fluffy egg bake or like a crustless quiche.  Delicious.  (Funny enough, German tourists suggested we Google “german eggs slang”. Funny.)  This Call hails from Munich, but doesn’t require the inclusion of eggs.  Great international show opportunity…

Personality, shared experiences & situations can all contribute to shaping the feelings that people inspire in us, and the force of love & affection can manifest itself in countless different ways. What is it that we love so much about people? How do these feelings express themselves? And how can we capture this love & transcribe it photographically?” –from atelier-alen.com

ARTIST of the DAY: Gehard Demetz

sadness & SILENCE

The loss & violence in Orlando this week is unbearable.  I was once watching an interview with today’s artist in which he was trying to speak to his inspiration, his inner voice.  He said,”I represent this world, this culture.”  I heard this and wondered about the world of which he spoke, this world of children in arresting situations, and hoped his work wasn’t REALLY representative of the world.  I don’t want the world to be that painful, that complicated.  But it is.  I love this work.  I will always love this work.  Today, I wish it didn’t feels quite so real. Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Gehard Demetz has put a face on our world today.  (continues below)

SWEET streets

Have you ever attended a fast food wedding?  I kinda have.  At a recent wedding, the bride & groom opted for an outdoor ceremony & reception.  The reception was catered… by a sweet food truck featuring a custom French menu including pastries in lieu of a wedding cake.  It was priceless.  They met in Paris; they fell in love under a lamppost, street food in hand.  Sweet & from the street, just like this next call. Take a look…

“Ahh, the street. That intoxicating cocktail of humanity. They come in all shapes and sizes, from the majesty of New York’s Fifth Ave or the Champ de Elysee to the humblest backstreet and alley. Some have seen better days, like the ghost towns of Highway 61, and some are teeming with the kaleidoscope of humanity. But whether they are asphalt or cobblestone, made of dirt or even water, every street tells a story.” — from 1650 Gallery
