I spent another week eating & working on the road.  I am a grazer, always snacking on something whether I am home or on the road.  Most of my work gets done in a hotel room or in the car during night drives, but this week I spent hours in a coffee shop.  Ewwww.  The yuck didn’t come from the coffee or the fantastic lunch I had.  It came from my laptop.  Gross.  Who do I call to decontaminate my work space?  The fluorescent lighting in the coffee shop highlighted every crumb, splotch & speck.  This next Call wants your view on technology & nature (not necessarily food).  Take a look…

After another week on the road, it is easy for me to begin to see patterns in the towns through which I drive — aspects of the constructs that seem to reflect back the personality of the town, be they real or fabricated. I struggle with self-doubt like every artist, like every person.  I struggle with balance and/or learning to live with imbalance.  I want peace and tranquility, but lack the self-control to say “no” often enough to allow time for the peace.  I find myself annoyed by the gospel of “busy” but fulfilling the stereotype repeatedly.  Art is the exception.  Art prompts but stills me, makes things clearer.

The mixed-media collage work today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Laura Lein-Svencner gave me a little perspective today, helped me weigh options.  Pause for just a moment…

I’m such a fan of found-object assemblage, trash art & recycled materials.  I understand the debate over archival materials, and I embrace a movement toward outdoor ephemeral sculpture in parks and outside museums & universities.  However, I do often find my self frustrated when an artist chooses to use a recycled materia regardless of of whether it really works.  I don’t like the gimmick of it all.  But the sculptural work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Dimosthenis Prodromou finds itself at one with newsprint.  If feels like a natural progression of the paper’s lifecycle.  It appears both solid, but soft & light.   A ready-made pallet…

CALL for ENTRIES: Trees 2016

Last Fall the local acorn crop failed, along with most of the hard mast.  As a result, black bears suffered along with the deer, squirrels & jays; it is a primary food source in the Smokies.  The bears were so hungry last year, more than 50 of them ended up at our local rescue.  I am hopeful for this year’s crop.  Every squirrel, chipmunk & jay that has crossed my path has done so with a green acorn in its mouth, or so it seems.  Fingers crossed the trees don’t let all the little critters down this year.  This next Call is also all about the trees.  I like this one…

JUROR:  Traer Scott is an award winning fine art and commercial photographer and author of six books. Her work is exhibited around the world & has been featured in dozens of other national & international print and online publications. Traer had her 1st solo museum show Natural History at the University of Maine Museum of Art in 2015 & received the 2010 Rhode Island State Council for the Arts Photography Fellowship Grant & the 2008 Helen Woodward Humane Award.

AWARDS:  Winners will receive $3,000 in cash awards, be featured in a NY gallery exhibition (October 4-16, 2016 at the Jadite Gallery in the Hell’s Kitchen area in Manhattan), on the NYC4PA online gallery exhibit & in the TREES 2016 catalog. We eat dozens & dozens of eggs each month. It would be easy to assume that when we’re out, we’d avoid them.  That’s not really the case.  I have them fried, over-medium, after late night outings, take them cold & hard-boiled to picnics or on early mornings.  And on my recent stop at Sugar Mama’s, a little bakery/bar combo, in Knoxville, I was treated to “German Eggs”.  Think of it as a fluffy egg bake or like a crustless quiche.  Delicious.  (Funny enough, German tourists suggested we Google “german eggs slang”. Funny.)  This Call hails from Munich, but doesn’t require the inclusion of eggs.  Great international show opportunity…

ARTIST of the DAY: Gehard Demetz

sadness & SILENCE

The loss & violence in Orlando this week is unbearable.  I was once watching an interview with today’s artist in which he was trying to speak to his inspiration, his inner voice.  He said,”I represent this world, this culture.”  I heard this and wondered about the world of which he spoke, this world of children in arresting situations, and hoped his work wasn’t REALLY representative of the world.  I don’t want the world to be that painful, that complicated.  But it is.  I love this work.  I will always love this work.  Today, I wish it didn’t feels quite so real. Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Gehard Demetz has put a face on our world today.  (continues below)

Have you ever attended a fast food wedding?  I kinda have.  At a recent wedding, the bride & groom opted for an outdoor ceremony & reception.  The reception was catered… by a sweet food truck featuring a custom French menu including pastries in lieu of a wedding cake.  It was priceless.  They met in Paris; they fell in love under a lamppost, street food in hand.  Sweet & from the street, just like this next call. JUROR: Andrew Overtoom is an award-winning filmmaker & photographer living in L.A. He publishes THE UNDEAD NEG, is launching a quarterly photography journal & owns the 1650 Gallery.

AWARDS: Approximately fifty works will be chosen from submitted photos to be included in the STREETSCAPES group photography exhibition at 1650 Gallery in Los Angeles. Best In Show, 2nd & 3rd Place will be awarded & posted after the opening. Awarded photos will be featured on the show page & Best In Show winners will have a small portfolio featured in the 1650 Spotlight gallery.

SALES: Selected artists may choose to offer their work for sale. The gallery retains 50% commission. The 1650 Gallery offers free matting and framing for accepted photographs that fit their pre-cut mat sizes for the duration of the exhibition.
