CALL for ENTRIES: Maker, Thinker, Feeler

Learn more about The Artist as Maker, Thinker & Feeler!hot HOT hot

My kitchen is awash with hot peppers.  A trip to our UT Farmers Market resulted in a bounty of experimental varietals of habenero & Scotch bonnet peppers.  I moved them from a paper bag to the dehydrator trays, and three hand washes later, my hands were still on fire.  The maker in me couldn’t let go of the idea that I need to preserve them for use over the winter.  The maker in me tries to find a use for every extra.  How does your maker-thinker-feeler side affect your work?  This Call wants to know.  Take a look…

I miss fish.  I live in a land-locked state; therefore saltwater fish are expensive if you can even find it fresh.  I love the abundant mountain trout, but a simple grilled flounder or grouper is just a dream.  If you can find no other reason to visit Florida, let me recommend the fish –and this next callTake a look at this one…

CALL for ENTRIES: Transience

Here today, gone tomorrow –ah, transient tomatoes.  Just last week I was lamenting how many ways I could quickly preserve the abundance of tomatoes I brought home from the farmers market.  Now?  I have a handful of tiny Romas left before I have to suffer the grocer’s sad selection of hard, hot house harlots that pass as tomatoes. This next Call wants your take on transience, physical, mental or ethereal.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Root to Bloom

Learn more about the Root to Bloom exhibit at the Principle Gallery!SIPPING and driving

While traveling around the country, people often ask what food I miss most from home.  The truth is, what I really miss is tea — unsweetened, cold-but-not-iced, sans caffeine.  I drink at least a gallon a day.  I can make it on the road, but it isn’t the same.  Different water, different container, different refrigerator.  When I am nearly home from a road trip, I always think the same thing, “I can’t wait to get home & have a glass of tea” (and see my family and dog, yeah, yeah, I know).  This next call wants to know what “home” is to you.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Altered State

Learn more about the Altered States of Collage exhibit from the Collage Artists of America!INGREDIENTS a-go-go

It is casserole week at my house.  Every once in a while we spend a day assembling casseroles.  I don’t know why people consider them “easy” meals because they take excessive amounts of time, prep and organization, but I do find them convenient to have around once they are pre-prepared on a week I need free time at the end of the day.  Plus, when we have a bevy of rapidly ripening food from our local farmers market, casseroles offer an excellent long-term storage option via the freezer.  But the best part of making casseroles are the ingredients.  Like many of you, I am guilty of getting into a rut of one protein and two vegetable for meals; however, casseroles are a collage of sometimes a dozen or more ingredients.  The combination of ingredients makes for a special treat –like this next collage call.  Don’t miss this one…

ARTIST of the DAY: Mister Finch

“toadstool” (textile art) by Mister Finch

“A story sewn in, woven in. Velvet curtains from an old hotel, a threadbare wedding dress and a vintage apron become . . . . Storytelling creatures for people who are also a little lost, found and forgotten.” Mister Finch

__

I find tactile joy in vintage textiles and incorporating them into my life gives me a sense of history, of continuation, that my personal story lacks in some degree.  The works of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Mister Finch, are gifts of life, experience, labor and joy — of mindfulness.  These creatures have a sort of fabricated authenticity, a beautifully crafted reality.

________________

“My work is about words – the ‘sound’ of them, the ‘feel’ of them and the forming of letters.   The choice of tool is uninhibited and relevant to the content of the text – therefore my range of writing tools has expanded from nib, through to brush and now to a needle.” Rosalind Wyatt, textile artist

__

Words have meanings; chose them carefully.  The repercussions can be irreversible.  The textile work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Rosalind Wyatt, investigates the emotion held within every individual mark of the hand to uncover the how each story “feels” as it unfolds.  Spectacularly intimate.

My Aunt Maggie B. loved marzipan. We would attempt to craft our own from honey, powdered sugar and finely ground almonds & foregoing the additional almond extract.  The year I spent with her trying to form our Play-Doh-like lumps into little fruit and vegetable shapes taught me that food color can be derived from real food, not just a jar, that gold and silver are edible in small amounts, and that treats well-labored taste better.  I celebrate the making & eating of every marzipan fruit with my great aunt Mag (RIP, 1922-2005).  This Call is a chance for you to celebrate life with someone who has already passed.  Take a look…
