TAMALE

Apparently, I’m a hot tomato.  Yep.  I have a friend from Honduras for whom English is a 3rd language.  And she likes to call me a hot tomato.  She uses it in reference to my writing and singing style, and I’ve decided to take it as a compliment.  The first few times I heard it, I gently reminded her that she meant ‘tamale’ not ‘tomato’.  But eventually, I came to think she may be right.  I look good in red. I am occasionally rounder than other times.  My insides are squishy, but the contents vary from sweet to acid–determined by environment.  This next Call is looking for all thinks tomato–apparently including me.  Love this theme…

Check out this Call for Entries from OFAR (Harrisonburg, VA) for Slag Mag‘s Issue 4, Tomato (print and digital). There is no entry fee, and art publication is always a good thing.  Entry is digital, but time is running out.  Take a look

HAD A COW

Have you heard about the cannulated cows?  Wow.  Who knew there were cows with port holes?  I was watching the Wisconsin edition of Weird Foods America.  And a professor at UW-Madison Department of Dairy Science was explaining how they put port holes in the side of cows to study the “ruminant’s digestive process” or the chewing of the cud aka “ruminating.”  Into my miscellaneous food trivia file THAT tidbit went; THEN, I received this Call from Ruminate Magazine.  Funny how things work out…

Everyone has to eat on the run sometimes.  Not every meal can be separated into  courses that stretch out over 2 hours.  But, compact meals don’t have to be of lesser quality just because they are rushed.  My favorite all-in-one breakfast is bananas with crunchy peanut or almond butter with a few berries chopped for the top. I cannot eat enough watermelon these days. And, I am intrigued by the variances.  My town has ONE grocery store, and the markings indicate that most of the watermelons they carry come from a single source.  So how is it that 3 melons of equal ripeness bought on 3 different days taste SO different?  One is super sweet, one in grainy & one is ripe, but tangy.  This next Call is for Still Life where the presence of fruit is ubiquitous.  Did you every notice how rarely you see watermelon in those paintings?  Contemplate that when you choose your subject matter…

How is it that quiche became girly food?  I was at a cafe recently that specializes in quiche.  The waitress was reciting the day’s specials to a neighboring table of guests when the man interrupted her to say, “I’m not interested in quiche; I’m a MAN.” Really?  It is eggs, cream and cheese.  I thought, “Maybe it is due to the pie form.”  But, men eat pie, right?  I don’t understand his reasoning, but I restrained myself from asking for the sake of the man sitting at my table.  Maybe this next Call is looking for the quiche-goodness in women only.  Maybe.  Investigate…

Painting
The work of MEGAN ELIZABETH reflects an attitude of experimentation, analysis of the elements of accident & a curiosity regarding the beauty created by the transparency & overlapping of ideas. Washes in the paintings, elements of spontaneity & use of collage are fundamental in many of my works. My inspiration comes from waterscapes, sunsets, bright colors in nature & the silhouettes created by extreme light or darkness. Much of my work has been derived from experiences living in Spain, travels in the Caribbean and in Europe & growing up on the east coast of the US.
