I double most of the recipes for soups, stews & casseroles.  My child takes his lunch everyday, and despite working from my home office, I don’t have the time to make lunch everyday.  So, leftovers are it.  Eggplant lasagna is everyone’s favorite doubled meal, by the way (because it is THAT good 🙂 ).   The prizes for this next Call have almost doubled in the past 3 years.  Take a look…

Sherry is a magical ingredient.  I’m not a fan of the aperitif, but you’ll always find sherry in my cupboard.  All of it smells like fingernail polish remover to me, so I’ve just give in and started buying the salt-fortified cooking version.  Why is it magical, you ask?  Sherry is what makes french onion soup taste like french onion soup.  Trust me on this one.  It smells horrible when I de-glaze the pan while caramelizing onions, but the flavor afterward is, well, magical.  This next Call is meant to magical as well.  Great theme…

PEPPER
grinders

I have lost track of the number of pepper mills I have owned.  The best one I ever owned featured one-handed operation.  It eventually broke after being dropped one too many times, and I could never find the same one again.  The dilemma is that they either grind the pepper too fine or too coarse, and the adjusters never turn quite far enough.  Ground too finely, pepper will dominate the flavor of any meal.  Ground too coarsely,  peppercorns will give your guests a crunchy, spicy surprise in the middle of an otherwise well-balanced meal.  It is all about the size.  So is this next Call.  Take a look…

GROCERIES

I loosely plan a weekly menu each week by making sure there are at least seven proteins, seven green vegetables and a handful of starches available in the kitchen.  From those offerings, I try to make every week different.  But, since the proteins are almost always a couple of versions of same pork, beef, chicken and/or fish, making 52 different menus a year is a stretch.  And, I might add that there are only so many ways to prepare zucchini & broccoli.  But this next Call is the 52nd time this Call has been offered, and I promise the result has been different each and every time.  Maybe this is THE opportunity for you…

Learn more about Juror Vera Barnett from the Beaumont Art League!JUROR:  Born in New York and educated at the acclaimed Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Vera Barnett moved to Texas in 1985.  She began using pool toys as still life subjects, but felt a desire for more emotional and personal subjects.  Her solution was to create her own models from sewn plastic.  Barnett’s process yields paintings injected with emotions that are authentically human, yet fabricated through completely synthetic materials.

Cheese food is not cheese.  You’re allowed to like American cheese; feel free.  But, don’t take comfort in the idea that you are eating a natural cheese.  It is manufactured from milk, whey, milkfat, milk protein concentrate, whey protein concentrate, saturated oils; emulsifiers, salt & artificial coloring–and that’s assuming you aren’t consuming a diet variety.  Think of it this way…if the cheese can’t stand alone, then maybe it shouldn’t have the spotlight in any of your meals.  This next Call is looking for a big cheese (or six) to put in the spotlight.  Are you a big cheese?

MOUTH

I dislike the semantics of having an “open mind”.  Doesn’t that, quite literally, mean that anything can go in and out?  I don’t want that for my mind any more than I want that for my menu.  I simply will not abide even a “devil’s advocate” argument on some subjects anymore because for me, wrong is wrong.  I feel the same way about food.  I’ve tried an impossibly large number of foods over the years.  I will not even entertain the possibility of tasting some foods anymore.  Grubs might be fantastic or even taste like my favorite stinky cheese, but I won’t be eating them, EVER.  Call me closed-minded AND closed-mouthed in this respect.  Luckily, this next show is wide open.  Investigate…

I live less than a mile from one of the boundaries of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  I also live only a mile from downtown; however, my town has a tiny population of around 3500 residents.  My location has a profound impact on the food I eat.  The availability of exotic foods is relatively limited unless you count game meats which are prevalent even in upscale restaurants.  I keep a clean grill because predators are a REAL, not imagined, threat.  I don’t hike or cook in the woods alone because black bears do eat people occasionally.  Where I live defines what I eat and my relationship with the “wild kingdom.”  This next Call wants to know all about YOUR relationship with animals.  Take a look…

I have always preferred chocolate in my stomach, not necessarily on my face–unless it got there on its way to my stomach.  But as my journey toward a simpler life continues.  I am fascinated by the foodstuffs that can be used for non-culinary purposes.  I’ve used coconut oil on my hair and avocado on my skin for a long time.  But did you know that you can use cocoa as a colorant in a food-based face powder.  I’d put on weight if I had to breathe in the smell of cocoa all day.  But, it will still make me look at what I wear on my face differently. Hopefully this next Call will make you look at faces a little differently too…
