POT

The art in my kitchen is more commonly viewed than any other work in my house.  Maybe it is because I spend a lot of time waiting for potatoes to boil and onions to caramelize and cheesecake to bake–actual cheesecake pictured left. My collection ranges from diary collage applied to toasters to beautiful textural miniature abstracts to large flying pigs.  This next Call could help you get your work in someone else’s kitchen.  Investigate this one…

Check out this Call for Entries from Malamegi Lab for the Art + Design for the New Design Collection. $35 entry for 10+ images.  Here’s a way to get your work in front of designers.  Take a look…

INGREDIENTS

My true goal with food is the same with art: to see you be brave.  But being brave has to be based on knowledge, not whim.  This is true of both food AND art.  I would never have you enter a show without doing at least some preliminary research into the venue, gallery, organization or publication.  So I want to encourage you never to let a food enter your mouth without a little preliminary research into ingredients or origin.  Do me a favor, if I can’t get you to quit eating food with labels, at least read the label.  There are scary things hidden in lots of foods. This next Call wants to explore the hidden as well.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Strange Figurations

My kid loves quiche.  He requests it for every special occasion–from birthdays to graduations.  The secret is 6 eggs to 2 cups of heavy whipping cream for a deep dish, and don’t talk to me about the fat.  Really.  He rarely cares what’s in it, but when I’m looking for brownie points, I throw in bacon and/or pepperoni.  I do it for the look on his face.  How strange it is to see him look lovingly at a brunch food.  This next Call is looking for your strange figurations–and not just the faces.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Industrial

I need a food segue about Colorado, but did you know that Colorado doesn’t even have a state food?  So bizarre.  Truth be told, when I hear Colorado— specifically, Pueblo, Colorado–I always think of the PSAs that ran between Saturday morning cartoons when I was little.  I am sure I am giving away my age, but I can clearly remember having a milk mustache and hearing, “For more information, write to ‘Pueblo, Colorado, 81009’,” (home of the  Federal Citizen Information Center). It is a shame that sort of random trivia doesn’t make me a genius.  This next Call hails from Pueblo, and genius would come in handy.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from Kadoya Gallery (Pueblo, CO) for Industrial.  This gallery claims its focus as “emerging creative genius”! What’s not to love about that criteria?  I’m full of creative genius.  You too?

One may characterize industrial as large metal structures, both new and aged, twisting and climbing their way into focus, tightly-wound steel cables, factory floors, and the heavy iron of old railroad trusses. Within the notion of the industrial, however, there is an human emotional attachment connected to the laborer and labor movement, as well. We challenge you to take this subject in any direction and focus you may feel fits the theme.

I wax nostalgic around holidays, and Mother’s Day made me think of pimento loaf.  When I was around 7, my father & I lived in Little Rock, Arkansas.  My Mom wasn’t around (that’s a long story for another time), and my Dad made all my lunches.  In his mind, pimento loaf was an appropriate lunch meat for a 7 year old.  At night, I would sneak to the bedroom door and whisper “peanut butter & jelly” while he prepared to make my lunch–subliminal influence.  I quit getting pimento loaf, and at least 3 days a week, I got Goober Grape®.  My Dad never mentioned it.  This next Call also conjures images of childhood for me.  Maybe my childhood wasn’t the standard.  Hmmm…

Road trips are not great for the fit of my performance clothing.  My husband and I are musicians, and we have a lot of shows for the summer.  Many of those shows require a drive of at least a few hours.  That means road food.  The danger is that I will eat french fries at every stop, punctuated by the occasional order of homemade potato chips.  I eat the eggs at Waffle House just to have an excuse to eat the hashbrowns.  I have a potato problem.  Can you tell.  it is going to be a long summer, ha.  This next Call is all about being on the road–not just the food that accompanies a road trip.  Take a look…

CHICKY

When I was pregnant, I couldn’t eat anything that looked like a bird.  The smell of fresh-roasted chicken made me ill.  And, while I could eat a chicken nugget or bad, food-service breaded chicken patty, the mere sight of a drumstick would make me violently ill.  At the time, I worked behind the cheese counter at The Gourmet Shop–which was, and still is, famous for the hundreds of pounds of chicken salad they make & sell everyday.  That job didn’t last long.  This next Call IS NOT for roasted birds; I suspect they would prefer imagery of birds that are still very much alive.  Just sayin’…

I had brown tomatoes at dinner tonight, and they were NOT rotten.  They were Kumatoes–a hybrid developed in Spain.  I noted they were a touch sweeter, but less exotic tasting than they appeared.  But, I can’t resist a weird fruit or vegetable, so I tried them as a part of a Caprese Salad.  Pretty, but forgettable.
