One of my most prized possessions is a stolen recipe for Caesar Dressing.  A restaurant in Savannah, GA served Caesar salad that was created table side.  My mother and I drove 100 miles just to have lunch.  After telling many servers over the years of our 100-mile trek, I convinced one to give me the illicit recipe–strictly against their non-disclosure statement.  It is fantastic.  I keep the recipe, hand-written by the server, in a special place, home only to my inherited family recipes.  I could re-type it, but that would be a dishonor to the server that so kindly risked his job for my obsessive palate.  This next Call is all about the handwriting.  Take a look…

Graceful Envelopes

The contest was created in 1995 by the Smithsonian Institution’s National Postal Museum, which administered it until delegating responsibility to the Washington Calligraphers Guild in 2001.

Beginning in 2003, the National Association of Letter Carriers agreed to partner with the Washington Calligraphers Guild and exhibit the Adult winners.

In addition to promoting the art of calligraphy, the Graceful Envelope Contest celebrates the role of letters in binding people together and serves as a reminder that the people who deliver the mail are career government employees who take pride in their work and care about the communities they serve.

Open to all artists

MEDIA:  Each entry must be a stamped envelope, either manufactured or handmade, delivered through the U.S. Postal Service.  The envelope will not be opened.  Size may not exceed 7×9 inches. Standard #10 business envelopes are also permitted.  Some envelope sizes require additional postage.

DEADLINE:  Postmarked no later than Monday, February 25, 2013

NOTIFICATION:  May 2013

ENTRY FEE:  None

AWARDS:  Although no prizes will be awarded, winners will receive certificates and possible media publicity. Winners will be exhibited online at www.calligraphersguild.org and Adult winning envelopes will be exhibited at National Association of Letter Carriers headquarters (100 Indiana Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20001; 202-662-2851) and may also be published or exhibited elsewhere.

CALL for ENTRIES: Eutectic

I just found out my stove won’t go below 225°.  I was preparing to roast chickpeas instead of drying them in my dehydrator.  But, I usually slow roast them at 200°.  Hmph.  Those 25 degrees make a difference.  You know what I mean.  Haven’t you ever split the difference when you had to bake two things at two different temperatures at the same time?  Something usually suffers.  I’ve eaten many a soggy crust pizza because of this dilemma.  Well this next Call comes from a gallery whose very name involves a melting point reference.  Intrigued?

Eu・tec・tic – [yoo-tek-tik] adj.: The proportion of constituents in a mixture that yields the lowest possible complete melting point; often lower than the constituents on their own.

Similar to the relationship between the components that make up clay and their proportions, Eutectic Gallery wishes to explore the relationship between an artist’s process, product, & concept, and the public’s interpretation of, interaction with, and critique of said work.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists

MEDIA:  Ceramic

DEADLINE:  February 8 for the April exhibit (don’t worry…you can submit online) and March 8 for the May exhibit

NOTIFICATION:  Traditionally, within 30 days.  Editor’s Note:  I have tried to contact the gallery for confirmation; however, I have not heard back in time for the February 8th deadline.  I will update when I do.

ENTRY FEE:  For a single artist $25 and $35 for paired artists, either can submit up to 5 images.  Add’l $5 ea.

I’m not a huge fan of buffet restaurants.  I understand why people hosting large parties prefer buffets, but I choose NOT to go to buffet restaurants because I prefer not to be surrounded by people. ROMAN SUSAN operates as a gallery and venue for arts programming in the Roger’s Park neighborhood of Chicago. Roman Susan is named after Roman and Susan Lewandowski.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists.  Editor’s Note:  Accepted artwork has to be delivered for a March 29th opening–only two weeks after the deadline.  So, artists outside the US could be looking at hefty delivery fees for such a short turn around time.

I have a long-standing addiction to pasta.  More accurately, I am addicted to that slightly drowsy, completely relaxed feeling I have when I finish a beautiful Italian meal.  My friends have been trying to get me to read Wheat Belly, but I’ve resisted for fear that I would end up having to give up my favorite pasta, whole wheat couscous.  I cannot bear the thought.  So, this next Call comes from San Francisco which has nothing to do with couscous, but the last time I made a Rice-A-Roni segue, I got email for weeks.  So, my stream of consciousness led me to couscous.  I know, random.  Regardless, don’t miss this next Call…

JUROR:  Jim Casper is the founder and director of Lens Culture, an international photographic arts organization based in Paris. He is publisher and editor of Lens Culture’s popular international online magazine which explores contemporary photography, media, and world cultures.

In its November 2012 yearly round-up of the best photography websites, publications and galleries, the UK Guardian wrote: “Lens Culture features essays, slideshows, audio and visual interviews and incisive criticism, making it one of the most authoritative and wide-ranging sites.” Lens Culture hosts the annual international photography portfolio review conference in Paris, Lens Culture FotoFest Paris, and sponsors the yearly Lens Culture International Exposure Awards competition for photography and multimedia.

SALES: All work in the Exhibition will be offered for sale. Artists may consult with Gallery Photographica to determine prices.  Gallery Photographica retains a 40% commission on sold works.

AWARDS: The juror will designate Gold Medal and Silver Medal awards. Gold Medal award winners will be in the San Francisco Exhibition. Gold and Silver Medal award winners will be displayed in their online gallery, with links to the artists’ sites. $6,000 (USD) in awards will be granted to 3 Gold Medalists as follows: 1st Place $3,000, 2nd Place $2,000, and 3rd Place $1,000.

Additionally, the juror will select works that will be shown in the Arc on-line gallery only. This allows for more works to be seen beyond the 1,000 square feet physical limitation of the gallery.

SALES:  60% of the sale will go to the artists, 40% of the sale will go to Arc.
