I wish all food were pretty.  But, it isn’t.  I love lentil soup, but it tends to look like mud.  I love asparagus marinated in balsalmic vineager, but I tends to look like it has been sitting in motor oil.  Peas soup is heaven, but we won’t even talk about what it looks like.  Mud.  These foods are clear as mud.  This next Call will be clear a mud to a few of you.  Take a deep breath and remember that sometimes it is all worth it in the end.  Investigate, at least…

PURPLE POTATO,
pomegranate

Produce is the every man’s gourmet food.  I will try to avoid preaching about the cost of produce being a contributing factor to the unhealthy eating habits of people world wide, but the truth is, I spend a larger percentage of my grocery budget on fresh produce than anything else, including proteins.  But if you have the desire for a gourmet treat, it doesn’t have to be thousand-dollar truffle oil or exotic sashimi-grade fish.  Try a new fruit.  The taste found in a pomegranate is not to be believed.  Substitute a purple potato in your recipe.  Buy a fresh herb plant for your kitchen window; just one will do.  This next Call wants the every man’s gourmet photo–the cell phone pic.  Investigate…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Darkroom Gallery (Essex Junction, VT) for Mobile-O-graphy. The entry fee at Darkroom is always low ($20), and they will provide free matting & framing if you work in their standard sizes. Take a look…

Mobile-O-graphy

Images made with mobile phones are becoming part of the photographic mainstream. Made with a phone camera, processed on the phone and even printed from the phone, these images are showing up in exhibitions both as a genre and alongside classic silver gelatin prints. Show them your latest mobile creations.

What distinguishes mobile device photography from that made with other devices? Less and Less. Possibly the fact that you can do it all on one device is unique. Sometimes the images created with mobile devices are more candid. Having a camera with us all the time lets us capture moments that can otherwise escape. Very quickly mobile phones are becoming just another type of camera taking their place alongside pin hole cameras, toy cameras, point and shoot cameras, SLR cameras etc. Here, in the gallery, we say it over and over – it’s not the camera – it’s the photographer’s vision and skill that makes a great photograph. Last year’s mobile phone photography exhibit said it. They want this year’s exhibit to prove it.

HOT!

I have a soft spot for spicy foods. I regularly tell the folks at my favorite Thai restaurant that it isn’t hot enough if my scalp isn’t glistening.  My son, on the other hand, thinks all forms of peppers are the devil.  Mild salsa is an adventure for him…for now.  This next Call wants your take on Angels and Demons, but for the record, paintings of peppers might not be the right take on demons. Take a look…

Traditionally, Angels have wings, demons have horns. Sometimes what looks like an angel is a demon, and a demon may be an angel.  Other times, it is impossible to estimate what is actually a demon or an angel.  They’re looking for work that blurs the line between angel and demon and that plays with people’s perception of good and evil.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA:  Your take, interpretation, and mythology on angels and demons expressed visually in any 2-d medium

DEADLINE:  August 31, 2012

NOTIFICATION: In time for the October exhibition

I am fascinated by food fads.  Remember when jalapeno poppers were the newest trend?  I always wonder what the next trend will be and how a new “cutting edge” idea becomes a part of the main stream.  We are watching organic foods slowly become the norm, and the prices of organics are shrinking.  How long until the mainstream starts seeing more value in vegetarian, or even vegan, lifestyle choices.  This next show puts cutting edge together with art for a mainstream exhibit.  Maybe this one is for you…

When I think of Canadian foods, I think maple syrup.  But, it occurred to me that I don’t have any other pre-conceived notions other than that stereotype.  So, I Google’d it.  Shockingly, an informal Facebook survey resulted in poutine being voted as Canada’s unofficial national food.  Poutine is a French Canadian dish of French fries, topped with brown gravy and cheese curds. French fries, gravy and cheese.  What more could you want.  Nevertheless, if you go to the opening for this next Call, I am out of syrup.  Investigate…
