Sometimes…
YOU FEEL LIKE A NUT
Today, I miss peanut butter. When I was pregnant, peanut butter was a wonder food. It had just enough protein, sugar and fat to transform my mood, one tablespoon at a time. In celebration of my in-laws 50th Anniversary, I am headed on vacation to a much warmer clime…just in time for Christmas. You know what is not great about a warm vacation at Christmas? Being in a bathing suit at Christmas… when I should be eating peanut butter cookies and peanut butter pie and everything else that won’t run from me. Oh well, my pregnancy days are long over, so I’m gonna lay off the peanut butter for a couple of months. This next Call involves a completely different kind of womb. Take a look…

Hello,
I have been following your blog for almost a year now. Some of the calls I enter and some I don’t. This one I entered and it sounded fairly good. I wrote them and sent the information that they requested in a professional manner. What I received in return was a very unprofessional response and outrageous fees to show in their gallery. I have been dealing with galleries and curators for five years and this gallery seems like a joke. I understand that it’s NY but I’ve dealt with two other NY galleries that are far more professional then this and I have shown in one. I received a similar rental application from the other NY gallery but the one posted here is far more expensive. This in no way resemlbes a “Co-op” formed gallery.
I found them to be professional. The $100 fee for promo and hanging is not that outrageous.
I exhibited with them – you pay $100 to exhibit for “printing and reception fees.” It’s about as much as you’d pay to enter 2 calls or so I guess. Not exorbitant in my opinion. They contacted me so I was a little confused about why someone would contact me and then ask for money. The curator was very pleasant to work with. I don’t think it’s co-op pricing or anything shocking, just something to consider. Be sure to ask how many artists are on the roster if you do decide to show because I thought the show I was involved with was overhung – there were waaaaaay too many pieces to my eye, it looked like a salon show even though we were all expected to spend a couple hours hanging the show.
The price to pay is actually not $100 as some generous people posted. The total amount to participate is $1,000 for a solo show. If you pay $100 is only for group shows as the description above and as you all can read. It is clear that the group show it looks much more like a flea-market than a professional art gallery. I wouldn’t pay 1 penny to be there in a forgotten-by-God area. People may pass by the gallery once in a while, just because is on the main street near PS1 but nobody really goes visiting that place unless passing by, by chance.
