Did your parents peel grapes and pretend they were eyeballs at Halloween? Mine either, but I always wish they had. I wanted oiled spaghetti for worms and icecubes with plastic bugs, chocolate covered crickets… the whole nine yards. Alas, it is too late now. Or is it? Live our your Halloween fantasies by designing a creepy installation for one of the country’s premier Halloween events.

Haunted Basement
The Soap Factory is now accepting proposals for The Soap Factory’s 2011 Haunted Basement. Considered the premier haunted event in the Minnesota, The Soap Factory’s infamously creepy and legitimately haunted basement is a perfect canvas for creating immersive terror environments. Each year they seek new ideas, fresh perspectives and unexpected scares.
A limited number of room or environment designs and costume concepts will be accepted for The Soap Factory’s 2011 Haunted Basement. Accepted applicants will have the creative freedom to design and fabricate a room or costume for The Haunted Basement.
Although selected artists are expected to see their project through from conception to completion from May through August, artists will not be alone in this venture.
The Soap Factory has excellent resources for gathering supplies, and…
A small army of staff and volunteers
…that will advise and assist you on realizing your vision. This includes set, sound, tech and lighting designers, wardrobe, hair and make-up artists….even scent engineers who can make custom smells!
DEADLINE: April 1, 2011 This is not a post-mark deadline, packages or emails must arrive by April 1st at the latest. Use only US Postal Service.

REMEMBER:
1. This event isADULTS ONLY & occurs in an art gallery that promotes emerging artists
2. You are expected to build your own environment… Time & skill required.
3. Each area must accommodate 4 – 5 visitors at a time
4. The Haunted Basement build begins in May and continues over the summer, with everything completed by August.
5. They encourage you to take risks, so contemplate REAL FEARS
6. Think of ways to engage all of the senses in your work
7. All designs must be original, Soap Factory represents MINNEAPOLIS not Hollywood
8. Artists should plan on a commitment of 100 hours
9. Proposals should incorporate the naturally creepy setting of The Soap Factory’s basement
This will be one of the strangest and most rewarding artistic endeavors of your life.

REQUIRED MATERIALS:
A typed cover sheet with the following information: name, phone, email, address, title of proposal. A resume outlining any relevant work experience (ie: building or installation experience, etc). A typed, one-page project proposal outlining your idea for The Haunted Basement. A list of materials you will require to complete your project. 5 – 10 work samples. Work samples should be in the form of jpegs and be attached to your application. If submission is submitted via mail images must be available in printed form and on a CD in jpeg format.
